Neville Goddard and Advaita Vedanta seem surprisingly similar
I’ve been reading about Neville Goddard alongside Advaita Vedanta, and the overlap is honestly fascinating.
They use very different language, but both put a huge emphasis on consciousness and identity.
In Advaita, the basic inquiry is: “Who am I?”
I’m not merely the body, thoughts, emotions or roles I experience. The deeper Self is awareness itself.
Neville approaches it differently: “What are you assuming yourself to be?”
Instead of constantly identifying with “I’m struggling, I’m broke, I’m unlucky”, you assume the identity of the person who already has the desired state.
For example:
Current: “I’m stuck in a job and worried about money.”
Neville: “I am financially free. What would that feel like if it were already true?”
Advaita: “Who is the ‘I’ that is worried? Can I observe that thought?”
So one seems to be saying “question the identity”, while the other says “consciously choose the identity.”
There’s also an interesting similarity in how they approach circumstances.
Advaita teaches non-attachment to the changing world. Neville talks about not being controlled by present circumstances and living from the end.
And both can lead to a similar practical state:
less fear → less neediness → less reactivity → more inner stability.
The biggest difference, as I see it, is the goal.
Advaita ultimately points toward realizing that nothing is lacking in the Self.
Neville is much more focused on experiencing and creating the life you desire through imagination and assumption.
So I’m experimenting with combining them:
Advaita: “I am already whole.”
Neville: “From that wholeness, I choose the state I want to experience.”
For me, that makes manifestation feel less like “I need to get something” and more like “I’m choosing what state to live from.”
Curious if anyone here has studied both and sees the connection differently.
