[Meta] Can we define the eras of consoles to be more objective? Or is just Gen I, Gen II, etc., the way to go?

I come from a music background, which has a very interesting music history paradigm, specifically defined by different eras/periods (i.e. Medieval, Baroque, High Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, Modern, Post-Modern, etc., and many more specific/niche/cultural periods as needed).

I noticed on ar ecent thread discussing whether or not PS2 is considered "Retro", while this is a completely fair question, the "retro" line will forever be shifting forward in time. You can envision a day where Switch 2's are retro.

The most objective thing we have is the "Gen I" and "Gen II" consoles etc., but while hard and dry they do not paint much of a picture of what the actual era entails. "Retro" can paint a better picture but the issue is that that picture gets more and more blurred over time as the retro span grows wider and wider.

What say you of eras, periods, etc? How about things like ARcade era, 8bit era, 16 bit era, early 3d era, etc.? What other distinctions/cultural/technological frames can we have to help define better this unending gaming question?

I know my product is in need.

I am competitive in the market.

I even am growing a healthy following on insta, Facebook, TikTok, etc (although nothing viral yet).

Regardless, even if I had 100 times more sessions, on average 1k sessions to 1 sale is pithy, right? I need to do something to improve conversion, no?

What do you find the best area to focus is from converting a viewer to a buyer?

The above video talks about these points, among others, but the largest takeaway tends to be that Zelda games come out as individual titles or as a pair of sequels; however, these all woven together and put in the same universe is what makes the intrigue of the franchise as a whole.

For example, the scope on the Famicom of the original Zelda game saw its success grow enough it got the direct sequel of Zelda II. The Super Famicom then brought In a new era and they pivoted to a new perspective, which had a story followed through. By links awakening. N64? Again, completely new perspective.

Within the first 6 Zelda games we have three different “timelines” already. They are in pairs, burner also connected. So, where a lot of the richness and complexity of the whole world comes about is the fact that all of these couplets of games all happen to be fused together in one universe.

Then, for predicting the future, I think this also indicates that we may become with breath of the wild as it’s gotten it’s paired game already. Given an ocarina of Time Remake coming too, I believe it’s likely Nintendo wants to head into a new direction with the next mainline game.
