sick of secondhand fragrance causing asthma attacks

People all over the world are having trouble breathing because of secondhand scent from laundry, perfume, and cologne that pollute shared air. If you can't smoke there, don't wear scent there.

Fragrance is ableist. I'm tired of facing constant asthma attacks because of people's scented laundry, wearing scent or fragrance is rude and inconsiderate of others. One in twelve people has asthma, people need to stop saying their scents "don't bother others." If you are in a room with eleven other people, your perfume and laundry scents could kill one of them.

The Japanese have a word for assaulting others with scent, it's Sumehara--"smell harassment." Monster fragrances, beast mode scents, and wearing anything that others can smell is scent harassment. Scented laundry products are definitely smell harassment. I'm tired of being polite when other people's optional fragrance crap can kill me.

Class Action Lawsuit in USA Filed Against Dove for False "Unscented" Claims

The first shot has been fired over outdated, toxic label laws that protect companies from failing to disclose fragranced ingredients. Since not everyone outside the USA can always open every link, a copy of the article is below.

Every person deserves to know every ingredient in every product they buy. The reason "fragrance" is allowed to hide thousands of chemicals is, if people knew what was in fragrance then no one would buy it! We deserve full transparency and consumer protections.

Class Action Lawsuit Alleges Dove Sensitive Body Wash Falsely Advertised as ‘Hypoallergenic’

by Tracy Bagdonas

Summary: A class action lawsuit says Dove sensitive body wash is falsely advertised as hypoallergenic given it contains skin-irritating fragrance.

A proposed class action lawsuit claims that Conopco, Inc. falsely touts its Dove sensitive body wash as hypoallergenic when the product contains a known skin-irritating fragrance ingredient.

Want to stay in the loop on class action lawsuits that matter to you? Sign up for ClassAction.org’s free weekly newsletter.

The 30-page complaint contends that although Conopco markets Dove Sensitive Hypoallergenic Body Wash as safe for those with sensitive skin, independent testing has shown that the product contains d-Limonene, one of 26 fragrance allergens recognized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

According to the lawsuit, the “hypoallergenic” label appears prominently on both the front and back of the Dove body wash bottle, suggesting to consumers that the product is formulated without ingredients known to trigger skin irritation or reactions.

However, the lawsuit argues that Conopco fails to clearly disclose to consumers the alleged presence of d-Limonene in its product, which renders the “hypoallergenic” representations false and misleading.

“By deceiving consumers about the nature, quality, and formulation of its Product, [Conopco] was able to capture market share from competing products and command a price premium, increasing its own sales and profits,” the complaint asserts.

The complaint bases its allegations on testing conducted in April 2026 by an independent laboratory, which allegedly detected d-Limonene in the Dove hypoallergenic body wash. The suit claims that d-Limonene is likely included within the product’s generic “fragrance” ingredient listing.

According to the complaint, d-Limonene is a fragrance compound commonly used in beauty and personal care products solely for the “aesthetic purpose” of adding scent. Per the case, the American Academy of Dermatology has recognized fragrance ingredients as skin irritants and a leading cause of contact dermatitis.

The case alleges that growing consumer demand for hypoallergenic products has enabled companies to charge premium prices for products marketed as less likely to cause irritation.

“Given the increased prevalence of allergic contact dermatitis and other skin conditions, consumers increasingly seek clean products looking for and relying on terms such as ‘hypoallergenic’ in making purchasing decisions,” the filing states.

Consumers reasonably understand the term “hypoallergenic” to mean a product is specifically formulated to reduce the likelihood of allergic reactions compared to regular products, including through the avoidance of known irritants, the suit says. The complaint notes that the FDA has similarly acknowledged that products labeled as hypoallergenic are understood to produce fewer adverse reactions.

Because consumers have no practical way to independently verify whether a product contains fragrance allergens, they must rely on the manufacturer’s labeling and marketing to accurately represent the product’s qualities and ingredients, the suit argues.

According to the case, consumers who observed the “hypoallergenic” claim on the Dove sensitive body wash reasonably believed that it would not include ingredients like d-Limonene that are “widely recognized” as a common cause of allergic contact dermatitis.

The Dove class action lawsuit seeks to represent all consumers who purchased Dove Sensitive Hypoallergenic Body Wash in the United States during the maximum statute of limitations period permitted by law.

everything from Amazon, Target, Costco, and Walmart reeks of laundry detergent and fabric softener now, and it's causing asthma attacks

It's getting to the point where I have to return 90% of what I buy from Amazon, Target, Costco or Walmart because everything smells so strongly of tide and downy (or Gain!). I am so sick of Downy Butt contaminating everything from vitamins to new clothes. P&G changed all their detergents and fabric softeners in 2025 to make the scents much stronger, and now everything their laundry products are stored near just plain stinks.

I'm a caregiver to a person who is remote and home bound, so we have to use these major retailers. I can't shop elsewhere for everything, these are my main or only choices. CVS and Walgreens have also become problematic, everything from there smells and tastes like laundry products. It's so gross! No way is this safe. We are not supposed to eat laundry detergent, and I don't want to eat food that tastes like laundry detergent either.

The fragrance contamination doesn't wash out of brand new fabrics, even after weeks of trying everything. We are fragrance free because we all have asthma... One in twelve people does too. Plus tons of people have allergies, MCS, autism, Lyme, and other medical conditions and disabilities that cause severe fragrance intolerance are affected. These are not small groups of people.

It's crazy that we can't get anything from any of these major retailers now because of these intense laundry smells, and they don't go away or air out, even with time.

We are getting asthma attacks when we open most amazon (or target, walmart, even costco) packages, the smell is so strong and doesn't air out. I wish all these major retailers would refuse to sell tide, downy, and gain because those products now make everything stored near them stink and taste like chemicals. Nothing gets these smells out now!

Costco used to be safest, but now they sell so many of these laundry scent beads and scented laundry products that everything really reeks. It's not fair to have new things arrive already smelling contaminated like Downy Butt. Nasty!

NJ transit (USA) discriminates against one in twelve people with asthma by spraying lavender scents in train stations

New Jersey has decided to discriminate against commuters with asthma. NJ Transit has added scent marketing and scent spraying to its train stations, making them inaccessible and violating the Americans with Disabilities Act.

If anyone is in the USA and wants to sue NJ transit because of this, use the link below to sign up as a plaintiff with Cole Van Note, a California firm that just filed massive federal class action lawsuits to sue against fragrance marketing. They are still taking plaintiffs but need people's list of discriminatory and inaccessible businesses soon. You can list any retailer, business, hotel, restaurant, transit, anywhere that you cannot access safely because of scent marketing.

https://colevannote.com/fragrance/

For those outside the USA, here is press release about the Cole Van Note lawsuit, it has great language anyone can use explaining why fragrance legally discriminates against people with asthma and fragrance intolerance. Anyone can use the facts and language in the press release to help defend themselves against fragrance at work, on transit, in retail, and so on.

Excerpts:
The pungent criticism contrasted with Kolluri’s gushing over the flowery fragrance during a new conference with New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherril, who announced a “Rapid Action Plan” for sprucing up the transit system’s often dingy — and unreliable — trains and buses.

“I hope people smell lavender. I’ve been obsessed by the lavender cleaning products for about a year now,” the transit honcho told the crowd, pointing out crews use the cleaners at Newark’s Penn Station overnight.

today I learned: scented laundry products contain the same chemicals as cigarettes and gasoline

Today I learned that scented laundry products contain thousands of chemicals--the same ones in cigarettes and gasoline. VOCs (volatile organic compounds), acetaldehyde, and benzene to name a few. These chemicals are known toxins that damage hormones and cause cancer. Label laws globally protect company profits, not consumers, so big businesses make millions a year selling water and chemicals and calling it detergent and fabric softener. It doesn't feel fair to not know what we are buying.

This video link explains some of it well, it is cheesy production value but the facts are there and I looked them up to verify, anyone else can too. Also, I'm not saying let's not use detergent or wash clothes! The video is talking about the history of the detergent and fabric softener industries, and why scented products hurt washing machines and plumbing because of the added plastics and waxes that coat everything over time. Laundry vent emissions from scented products are also making neighborhood air unsafe for people with asthma, or people who don't want to smell laundry stuff when they are outside. Google "scented laundry vent emissions," they are totally unregulated and bad for shared air.

I don't know about homemade detergent like in the video, I haven't tried it and probably never will. I use fragrance free powders from Nellie's or Branch Basics, with their oxygen boosters as needed, they cost about the same as scented products. Never had a problem, everything is clean. Some people say fragrance free doesn't clean as well, but I think this is with brands like All that cheap out and don't add the right enzymes.

I saw this poster on my facebook feed, I wondered what my fellow asthmatics thought of it. I am really tired of smelling other people's fragrance and cologne and scented laundry stuff everywhere I go, it makes it hard to breathe. What do yall think? USA Federal Class Action Lawsuit Filed this Week Against Marriott

https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20260508466024/en/Cole-Van-Note-Announces-Filing-of-Marriott-Hotels-Fragrance-Disability-Class-Action-Lawsuit

From the article:

Chemical/fragrance sensitivity is a recognized disability under the law and impacts nearly one-third of all Americans. Unlike naturally occurring scents, man-made fragrance is a pollutant which can contain dozens of unhealthy chemicals, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Use of fragrance limits access to airplanes, restaurants, hotels, medical facilities and countless other public facilities since it is well known to cause respiratory, dermatological and cognitive injuries.

According to the lawsuit, over 95% of chemicals found in synthetic fragranced products derive from petrochemicals including highly toxic benzene derivatives, aldehydes and phthalates, known endocrine disruptors and potential carcinogens which are linked to breast cancer and birth defects. As Scott Cole explains, “the fact that Marriott may have introduced fragrance in its facilities, believing it smells good or to mask unpleasant odors or even dangerous mold, does not justify using harmful compounds or excuse its discriminatory effect. Everyone is entitled to equal access, regardless of Marriott’s profit motives.”

Many with long covid have side effects from fragrances... Now, A Major Anti Chemical Fragrance Class Action Lawsuit has been filed in USA

Cole Van Note from California has officially filed a federal lawsuit against fragrance in public spaces! The lawsuit is against scent marketing in major businesses including Marriott, a business that is not ADA accessible. Why? Because they use non-consensual scent marketing that harms more than one in three customers who experience debilitating side effects from scents.

Anyone in the USA can contact Cole Van Note at the website below to join the lawsuit. This is important, it is a chance for our voices to be heard. No more fragrance poisoning in public!

You can find more anti-fragrance advocacy in the grassroots facebook groups Fragrance Free Class Action USA, Fragrance Free Class Action Canada, and Fragrance Free Living 100%.

From Cole Van Note Website

https://colevannote.com/fragrance/

"As we promised, our firm has started the anti-fragrance litigation movement by filing lawsuits in federal court. Our class action against the Marriott hotel chain was the first—and there are many more to come. But note, this is a “numbers game.” We will not significantly change public or corporate perception or educate them well by filing just a few lawsuits, so join us and help stop fragrance use wherever its unwanted.

These lawsuits seek damages but, first and foremost, they seek a change in business practices. If you have a chemical/fragrance sensitivity, you know that this condition impacts you every day. Don’t you want to be free to enjoy the same privileges and access to businesses that everyone else does? If so, Contact Us. With increased awareness of these issues, and a strong motivation to not be called out legally for violating the law, businesses can be stopped from using fragrance. Our firm has started litigation movements before that have changed industries and—with your help—we can do that here too.

The Press Statement we recently issued explains more."

avoid iHerb, everything stinks of cologne and perfume and they don't even have a phone number to get help

iHerb is the worst! My most recent order that arrived yesterday stinks of perfume and cologne from the people packing products, my food and medicine should not smell of other people's smelly fragrance. Fragrance contamination is so unsanitary and unhygienic, it is basically secondhand smoke. And there is no customer service, only a shitty chat bot! No phone number, no way to reach anyone.

I'm not going to take medicine or use a toothbrush that reeks of fragrance! Disgusting!

Could scented laundry products be killing bees?

Hi, I am a bee fan and citizen advocate for people with disabilities as well as the environment. I was wondering, does anyone else think scented laundry products (fragranced detergent, scented fabric softener, scent beads, perfumed dryer sheets) could be a major culprit behind what is killing all the bee populations?

Scented laundry products became bigger on the market around when all the bees started dying, and laundry scents have gotten much stronger in recent years with more added chemicals that pump directly into the air through dryer vents. Fragrance is currently not government regulated, so companies can add any ingredient or chemical under that masking label.

The chemicals in these and other fragrances are known to contain literally thousands of potent carcinogens that can harm every system in the human body (endocrine, neurological, hormone, respiratory, the list goes on). Many fragrances in laundry products contain the same carcinogens as cigarettes.

Here are a few links about the environmental damage to air caused by currently unregulated dryer vent emissions, specifically around laundry fragrances. I believe laundry fragrances are incredibly toxic to wildlife, bees especially, and this could be a huge and unregulated reason they are dying.

I tried spironolactone (50mg and 100mg) for almost a year, with not enough improvement in skin or hair. Finally a new dermatologist told me to switch everything to fragrance free--laundry products, shampoo, everything! I wasn't sure what to think, but wanted to look better and feel better. I discontinued spiro and went totally fragrance free, and after about 6-8 months my acne was gone. Turns out fragrance is full of terrible hormone damaging chemicals, and it can literally cause acne. Even perfumes and scented lotions. I mean, yikes. I had no idea.

It took some time for the laundry scents to wash out of my clothes (a few months, actually!), but wow what a difference. My hair is coming in fuller, acne cleared up, I look younger, and my sex life is incredible! My partner had struggled with erectile dysfunction for years, but a few months after we stopped using fragranced anything, things for him started... WORKING. And he's not on ED meds anymore, either.

Anyway, if anyone out there is struggling with acne, PCOS, or hair loss, try switching to fragrance free. It wasn't hard, and it wasn't really more expensive. I've found that my new fragrance free products are much higher quality for close to the same price, turns out the ingredients have to be better quality in fragrance free anything because nothing is hiding behind masking scents.

I did some reading about fragrance and was shocked by what I found... The words "fragrance" and "parfum" can legally contain thousands of carcinogens, the same ones in cigarettes. Fragrance can definitely cause hormone problems that lead to PCOS, acne, lower sex drive, even erectile dysfunction. Until companies are no longer allowed to hide any chemical under the fragrance label, we have to get smarter about knowing exactly what is in what we buy. And "fragrance" turned out to be a code word for "covering up a chemical that can break you out!"

I hope this helps someone! Acne is no fun, and it's not fair. Mine cleared up once I ditched fragrance and scents, and I'm so happy I found the dermo who suggested it and told me fragrance free was better than spiro.

I thought I'd be sad without fragrances and perfumes and my partner's cologne, but frankly, I don't even miss the scents! I much prefer clear skin and a bangin' sex life to the smell of laundry scent beads. :)

Good luck to anyone who tries it!

My partner has been struggling with erectile dysfunction for years, nothing was really helping. We went to a new doctor who basically said fragrance causes erectile dysfunction, he sees it all the time in his practice. Around the same time, a friend of mine who is a doctor suggested going fragrance free to see if it cleared up some stubborn skin problems I had. When not one but two doctors talked about fragrance free, we decided to check it out.

It sounded kind of far fetched, I mean seriously... Does fragrance cause erectile dysfunction? Turns out--yes. Yes, it absolutely does.

We did some research and were stunned to learn that the word "fragrance" legally contains thousands of carcinogens that really screw up hormones in both men and women. We started shopping around and the cost for fragrance free products was about the same. Switching detergents was easy, but it did take a few months for the scent of our old products to fade. Which made us start to wonder more about what really is in the scent beads and scented detergents and fabric softeners, because it took forever for the smell to finally wash out of our clothes.

I stopped wearing perfumes and scented lotions, and my partner stopped wearing cologne. Frankly, the more we swapped for non-scented, the better we both felt. It did take time but we noticed a huge change in our energy, and less depression.

It took a few months, but the erectile dysfunction is gone. Like, wow! I don't get migraines anymore, either. This is really personal to share, but not enough people are talking about what is really in all these fragrances we use to try to feel happy or better or sexier, and people deserve to know. I wanted to bring it up because I hope trying this simple switch will help others too.

In the end, this makes me angry: Label laws currently protect companies from having to disclose full product ingredients, it's really dirty. We deserve to know what is in what we buy, especially when it can harm our health, well being, and sex life. Cigarettes used to be advertised as sexy under similar label laws, and look how that turned out. Fragrance is no different, apparently. And it's being marketed to more teens and young adults, who have no idea that fragrance absolutely causes erectile dysfunction and low testosterone.

Anyway, switching products was easy in the end, and it made our lives a lot better in the relationship department. He's not on any meds for erectile dysfunction, and everything is good! No more fragrance meant no more erectile dysfunction, that was the only thing that changed.

It's World Asthma Day! One in twelve people has asthma, and fragrance is a top trigger for life threatening asthma attacks. Today, it's my wish that everyone who uses scented laundry products will consider switching to fragrance free, which is better for the environment, but also more considerate of the one in twelve people who can literally stop breathing if we're around fragrance.

Masks do not stop fragrance from causing an asthma attack. Saying "just wear a mask" isn't considerate, especially when the consequences of an attack can literally kill.

Scents and fragrance are completely optional, but breathing in shared public spaces isn't. Please, world, remember that one in twelve people can't breathe when you wear fragrance!

Aveeno fragrance free was my old reliable, I had a long time stash and finally ran out. Sadly, the Aveeno hand and body lotion formula has definitely been changed, for the worse. The old bottles have a different color top (brown), now the bottles (green and off white top) smell through the plastic, I had to store them outside and thought maybe they switch to a bad recycled plastic but never imagined they would change the formula. The formula ingredients on the label are the same.

The new aveeno “fragrance free” lotion smells so disgusting I had to wash it off within ten minutes, it is also greasy and gave me a basically instant itch reaction. I made the mistake of touching my face a few minutes after I put it on, and now my face is having a reaction exactly where I touched. I don’t know what is going on with aveeno, but this is a major betrayal.

Has anyone else had problems with aveeno changing their fragrance free lotion formula sometime in the last while?

Has anyone who has problems with the new aveeno found a good hand and body lotion substitute, non-greasy? cerave is good but the cream is too rich for full body use for me.

I am even wondering if maybe they changed to recycled plastic and that is contaminated with something awful that is keeping into the product, though I don’t know why this would make the only non-greasy lotion I ever found as greasy as an oil slick.

Warning; the new aveeno is so oily, it does not wash off! And the stink is on my clothes. Aveeno, this is a huge betrayal. This product isn’t what they sold for at least a decade, it’s smelly, oily badness. The entire room smelled like perfume and I could not figure out why, then I realized it’s this new Aveeno fragrance free lotion. It does not feel fragrance free at all, something has definitely changed.

The bottle even reads different: The old (good) bottle says "24 hours" of moisture, the new (bad) bottle reads "48 hour" moisture. I don't know when the formula changed because I keep up a stockpile for just this kind of problem, all I can say is the new aveeno lotion is gross!

EDIT
aha! they legally can change ingredients and not change the label. current label laws are dirty, dirty, dirty. we deserve a class action lawsuit for this kind of thing, it should be illegal to lie about what is in products.

Misconception: You’ll be able to see if a product will work by the ingredient list

Reality: ingredient lists really don’t tell consumers that much, outside of e.g. allergen disclosure. Anyone who tells you otherwise probably doesn’t really have a good grasp on what it all means.

1 ingredient name can represent 100s-1000s of ingredients with very different performances.

Huge Shein lawsuit about toxins in clothing and toys

“Independent testing has repeatedly shown that Shein clothing contains toxic chemicals at levels exceeding safety standards. Shein toys are laden with hazardous toxic chemicals and heavy metals. Additionally, consumers are also exposed to a digital security threat when shopping on the site. Shein’s platform is not just a store, but a data siphon leading directly to the Chinese government. Since the company operates at least in part in China, sensitive personal information of its consumers can at any time be commandeered by the CCP.”

I assume this is because of transitioning to lower quality and shorter fiber cottons, but Life is Good used to be a good quality brand with shirts that lasted for years and now they are poor quality, worse than Hanes used to be. Life is Good is still expensive, but the quality has gone way, way down. Even their "heavy weight" crushers stretch out of shape badly with wear, and get huge threadbare holes within one season of regular use. The images on shirts don't stay and flake off in chunks.

I had a coupon so ordered a few more because I know at least the sizes are consistent, but the new batch is scratchy, not thick, and does not feel like the good quality that kept me loyal for so long. When calling customer service, they don't care.

I used to buy Life is Good for the quality of fabric and longevity and softness, and the cotton held its shape well with wear. But now Life is Good is not very good! Still expensive, though!

I can’t find my normal cerave vitamin C serum anywhere, so I tried this vitamin C serum from mad hippie because none of the ingredients included fragrance or parfum. Today I opened the bottle and was blown away by a blast of strong fragrance that to me smelled very cheap and synthetic. It’s definitely not neutral and I could not even put it on to spot test.

I had the same problem with good molecules brand, they claimed their vitamin C serum was fragrance free but it smelled so strong I couldn’t be around it much less put it on. I tried doing a spot test and only made it an hour before I had to wash it off because the smell was so unbearable.
