wearing fragrance and scented laundry isn't a constitutional right (at work) in the USA

Paige Sparks is a US attorney. In the video, she breaks down why fragrance in a USA business violates the ADA and goes over past lawsuits that set precedent. In the USA, we don't have to put up with fragrance in any business.

Don't forget the power we have to stop fragrance in public spaces, thanks to law firm Cole Van Note! Anyone can fill out a list of businesses that sell scented products, have scented products on site, or allow fragrance on employees (including wearing scented laundry). The firm will file for free, we never pay anything. And it will result in clear, strong, enforced scent-free policies at that business.

We don't have to put up with secondhand scent or fragrance assault any more. Fill out the form, and win the fight for clean air!

fragrance and scents trigger seizures

I don't care what "internet sez," for me fragrances and scents definitely trigger seizures. It has made life so difficult! I have even had trouble accessing medical care because staff are wearing so much scented everything. Laundry, lotions, perfumes. It's too much. It has nothing to do with emotions or memories, it's any chemical fragrance. These scents have the same chemical toxins as cigarettes, it's not a far leap that they're harmful.

Fragrance assault has become a social norm, just like smoking used to be. People's laundry fragrances are especially intense, and the constant scent assault has become really difficult in public. "Just wear a mask" isn't a solution, the scents come right in; saying "just wear a mask" is honestly ableist. These new fragrances are also so much stronger overall and everyone is wearing too much, and it also triggers asthma attacks.

I wanted to leave a comment on an older thread but it was locked, so I'm posting a new one.

I wish people would cool it with the secondhand scent. "Sillage" isn't pretty, it's code for "I don't care about others, eat my chemical fume trail." Fragrance is hurting others, period.

I'm so grateful that there are waves of class action lawsuits in the USA against fragrance use in businesses, that's how big of a problem scent has become. The argument is that fragrance is a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and as someone who can't enjoy public spaces anymore because of scent on others, I agree. Scents and fragrances make public spaces inaccessible to people with chemical sensitivities, asthma, autism, and people with epilepsy. The big class action firm has even listed Disney! Disney pumps massive fragrances and scents into all its parks and hotels, everywhere, so many people can't safely go. Also, Whole Foods, because they use scented cleaning products, don't have a fragrance free employee policy so everything tastes like the employee's cologne and scented lotion, and those awful scented soap and candle towers.

Anyway, for anyone out there who struggles with seizures caused by fragrance and scent, you're not alone. We have the right to keep advocating against fragrance in public spaces, for me and many others scent is even worse than a cigarette.

Satirical article perfectly captures the realities of fragrance assault

My life is hell because of other people's scented laundry, other people's perfume, and other people's cologne. I am so tired of the constant fragrance assault and the asthma attacks it causes! Nothing about secondhand scent is funny, but this article managed to make me laugh.

This is also interesting that it describes the problem happening because of scented candles at the grocery store--Whole Foods USA just got sued by a class action law firm last week for selling and using scented products in the store, which is an ADA violation!

https://thedailytism.com/new-100m-record-set-by-autistic-woman-trying-to-get-away-from-scented-candles/

by Hare Lockwood

An autistic woman with no prior athletics training has successfully broken the 100m World Record trying to get away from the smell of Wanky Candles, eyewitnesses report.

Chi-Young Lee, 21, was completing a weekly shop at the local supermarket when her usual route through the aisles took her into a new, seasonal candle section.

“Usually it’s just bedding and other homeware,” explained Lee. “But after a few steps a sharp cinnamon scent became a whirling miasma of nasal chaos. The air was claggy, my vision went dark, and I just ran.”

Her desperate sprint up the high street was clocked by CCTV at an astonishing twenty-three miles per hour. According to Lee, she only stopped when she caught the whiff of a Lush in the distance.

Athletics coach Wallace Murray, 63, says that Lee has a long road ahead of her with professional training. “We had a quick go on the track to see if she could replicate her time, but once the starter pistol went off she just hid under a blanket for three hours.”

A representative for Wanky Candles presented Lee with a new unscented candle to commemorate her historic achievement. The world-record holder could not be reached for further comment as she was last seen running directly into the sea.

ableist doctors on Die Opbros video reel

https://www.facebook.com/reel/2719299355119066

Die_OpBros isn't making fun of doctors, they are making fun of patients.

Abusive doctors like this make life a nightmare for patients with disabilities. The video is mocking patients who have had to become educated enough in their own care journeys to use words like "dyspnea" (that is "shortness of breath") and "tachycardia" (that just means a fast heart rate).

If a doctor is pissed that a patient knows what tachycardia is, what does that say? But if patients are "ignorant," then they roll their eyes at that, too.

I am so tired of constant medical abuse! Attitudes like this are what is wrong with medicine.

Patients cannot win. If we know how to talk to doctors, they get angry and blow us off. If we don't know the right words, they scoff and blow us off.

I am tired of rampant ableism in the medical community, from doctors and nurses specifically. These people make money off of sick people and treat us like crap while demanding to be treated like heroes. But too often they are not doing their jobs at all.

they're all tragedeighs now

Has anyone else noticed that almost all names they're encountering are tragedeighs or tragedeigh flavored? I'm seeing mostly tragedeighs or "fancy" tragedeighs, everywhere, it's the norm.

I don't know the last time I met a Jane or William. And not only little kids, but people in their 30s. I am probably the only one, but I miss normal names that don't take three minutes to re-spell over on the phone, if I can understand the name at all because it is so you-neek it is clearly made up, or have vowels swapped around, or extra vowels, or missing vowels. These ultra you-neek names are a Payneh Eyuhn theea Assuh

Google home page animations are causing seizures - here is how to complain

If you are having seizures because of the endless animations on google's home page (I am!), please contact google and use this text to complain.

Google Disability Support Team
https://support.google.com/accessibility/answer/7641084?hl=en

I am writing to report an urgent accessibility problem with the looping World Cup animation on Google Search in Chrome on macOS.

The animation loops continuously and cannot be disabled via any obvious setting. This type of repetitive motion is a known trigger for photosensitive seizures and other serious neurologic symptoms. It also creates significant difficulty concentrating and using your products safely.

I have already:

  • Disabled Google Labs / AI features in my account
  • Checked Chrome and macOS accessibility settings
  • Searched online for an official way to disable this animation

There does not appear to be any built‑in option to turn off this specific animation or similar event‑based animations. Users should not be forced to install third‑party extensions just to avoid seizure‑inducing visual effects.

I respectfully request that Google:

  1. Provide an immediate way to disable this and similar animations (for example, a toggle on the page or a global “no motion / no celebrations” preference tied to the account or to system “Reduce Motion” settings), and
  2. Ensure that future special animations fully comply with accessibility standards, including WCAG guidance on flashing and motion.

Please treat this as an accessibility and health/safety issue, not a cosmetic preference. I would appreciate a response describing what steps Google will take to mitigate this risk and to provide a persistent opt‑out from such animations.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

can't do Chick-fil-A anymore, everything stinks of cologne and perfume

I have talked to the managers, but this has been going on for months now and I give up. My area chick-fil-a restaurants are all serving food that is coated in cologne and perfume and scented lotion stuff from employees. It's so gross! Everything tastes like their scented lotions and I can't do it anymore.

Chickfila is supposed to be better and it's more expensive, I don't want to smell other people's scented products on my food and I don't want to eat their cologne residue. The managers just shrug because they are wearing as much as the employees.

My whole family has asthma and this is no joke, fragrance that other people can smell is rude man. Nobody wants to smell other people's scents, and nobody wants food covered in cologne.

sick of secondhand fragrance causing asthma attacks

People all over the world are having trouble breathing because of secondhand scent from laundry, perfume, and cologne that pollute shared air. If you can't smoke there, don't wear scent there.

Fragrance is ableist. I'm tired of facing constant asthma attacks because of people's scented laundry, wearing scent or fragrance is rude and inconsiderate of others. One in twelve people has asthma, people need to stop saying their scents "don't bother others." If you are in a room with eleven other people, your perfume and laundry scents could kill one of them.

The Japanese have a word for assaulting others with scent, it's Sumehara--"smell harassment." Monster fragrances, beast mode scents, and wearing anything that others can smell is scent harassment. Scented laundry products are definitely smell harassment. I'm tired of being polite when other people's optional fragrance crap can kill me.

Class Action Lawsuit in USA Filed Against Dove for False "Unscented" Claims

The first shot has been fired over outdated, toxic label laws that protect companies from failing to disclose fragranced ingredients. Since not everyone outside the USA can always open every link, a copy of the article is below.

Every person deserves to know every ingredient in every product they buy. The reason "fragrance" is allowed to hide thousands of chemicals is, if people knew what was in fragrance then no one would buy it! We deserve full transparency and consumer protections.

Class Action Lawsuit Alleges Dove Sensitive Body Wash Falsely Advertised as ‘Hypoallergenic’

by Tracy Bagdonas

Summary: A class action lawsuit says Dove sensitive body wash is falsely advertised as hypoallergenic given it contains skin-irritating fragrance.

A proposed class action lawsuit claims that Conopco, Inc. falsely touts its Dove sensitive body wash as hypoallergenic when the product contains a known skin-irritating fragrance ingredient.

Want to stay in the loop on class action lawsuits that matter to you? Sign up for ClassAction.org’s free weekly newsletter.

The 30-page complaint contends that although Conopco markets Dove Sensitive Hypoallergenic Body Wash as safe for those with sensitive skin, independent testing has shown that the product contains d-Limonene, one of 26 fragrance allergens recognized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

According to the lawsuit, the “hypoallergenic” label appears prominently on both the front and back of the Dove body wash bottle, suggesting to consumers that the product is formulated without ingredients known to trigger skin irritation or reactions.

However, the lawsuit argues that Conopco fails to clearly disclose to consumers the alleged presence of d-Limonene in its product, which renders the “hypoallergenic” representations false and misleading.

“By deceiving consumers about the nature, quality, and formulation of its Product, [Conopco] was able to capture market share from competing products and command a price premium, increasing its own sales and profits,” the complaint asserts.

The complaint bases its allegations on testing conducted in April 2026 by an independent laboratory, which allegedly detected d-Limonene in the Dove hypoallergenic body wash. The suit claims that d-Limonene is likely included within the product’s generic “fragrance” ingredient listing.

According to the complaint, d-Limonene is a fragrance compound commonly used in beauty and personal care products solely for the “aesthetic purpose” of adding scent. Per the case, the American Academy of Dermatology has recognized fragrance ingredients as skin irritants and a leading cause of contact dermatitis.

The case alleges that growing consumer demand for hypoallergenic products has enabled companies to charge premium prices for products marketed as less likely to cause irritation.

“Given the increased prevalence of allergic contact dermatitis and other skin conditions, consumers increasingly seek clean products looking for and relying on terms such as ‘hypoallergenic’ in making purchasing decisions,” the filing states.

Consumers reasonably understand the term “hypoallergenic” to mean a product is specifically formulated to reduce the likelihood of allergic reactions compared to regular products, including through the avoidance of known irritants, the suit says. The complaint notes that the FDA has similarly acknowledged that products labeled as hypoallergenic are understood to produce fewer adverse reactions.

Because consumers have no practical way to independently verify whether a product contains fragrance allergens, they must rely on the manufacturer’s labeling and marketing to accurately represent the product’s qualities and ingredients, the suit argues.

According to the case, consumers who observed the “hypoallergenic” claim on the Dove sensitive body wash reasonably believed that it would not include ingredients like d-Limonene that are “widely recognized” as a common cause of allergic contact dermatitis.

The Dove class action lawsuit seeks to represent all consumers who purchased Dove Sensitive Hypoallergenic Body Wash in the United States during the maximum statute of limitations period permitted by law.

everything from Amazon, Target, Costco, and Walmart reeks of laundry detergent and fabric softener now, and it's causing asthma attacks

It's getting to the point where I have to return 90% of what I buy from Amazon, Target, Costco or Walmart because everything smells so strongly of tide and downy (or Gain!). I am so sick of Downy Butt contaminating everything from vitamins to new clothes. P&G changed all their detergents and fabric softeners in 2025 to make the scents much stronger, and now everything their laundry products are stored near just plain stinks.

I'm a caregiver to a person who is remote and home bound, so we have to use these major retailers. I can't shop elsewhere for everything, these are my main or only choices. CVS and Walgreens have also become problematic, everything from there smells and tastes like laundry products. It's so gross! No way is this safe. We are not supposed to eat laundry detergent, and I don't want to eat food that tastes like laundry detergent either.

The fragrance contamination doesn't wash out of brand new fabrics, even after weeks of trying everything. We are fragrance free because we all have asthma... One in twelve people does too. Plus tons of people have allergies, MCS, autism, Lyme, and other medical conditions and disabilities that cause severe fragrance intolerance are affected. These are not small groups of people.

It's crazy that we can't get anything from any of these major retailers now because of these intense laundry smells, and they don't go away or air out, even with time.

We are getting asthma attacks when we open most amazon (or target, walmart, even costco) packages, the smell is so strong and doesn't air out. I wish all these major retailers would refuse to sell tide, downy, and gain because those products now make everything stored near them stink and taste like chemicals. Nothing gets these smells out now!

Costco used to be safest, but now they sell so many of these laundry scent beads and scented laundry products that everything really reeks. It's not fair to have new things arrive already smelling contaminated like Downy Butt. Nasty!

NJ transit (USA) discriminates against one in twelve people with asthma by spraying lavender scents in train stations

New Jersey has decided to discriminate against commuters with asthma. NJ Transit has added scent marketing and scent spraying to its train stations, making them inaccessible and violating the Americans with Disabilities Act.

If anyone is in the USA and wants to sue NJ transit because of this, use the link below to sign up as a plaintiff with Cole Van Note, a California firm that just filed massive federal class action lawsuits to sue against fragrance marketing. They are still taking plaintiffs but need people's list of discriminatory and inaccessible businesses soon. You can list any retailer, business, hotel, restaurant, transit, anywhere that you cannot access safely because of scent marketing.

https://colevannote.com/fragrance/

For those outside the USA, here is press release about the Cole Van Note lawsuit, it has great language anyone can use explaining why fragrance legally discriminates against people with asthma and fragrance intolerance. Anyone can use the facts and language in the press release to help defend themselves against fragrance at work, on transit, in retail, and so on.

https://nypost.com/2026/05/14/us-news/nj-transit-sprays-lavender-in-train-stations-in-upgrade-push-as-riders-say-service-still-stinks/
Excerpts:
The pungent criticism contrasted with Kolluri’s gushing over the flowery fragrance during a new conference with New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherril, who announced a “Rapid Action Plan” for sprucing up the transit system’s often dingy — and unreliable — trains and buses.

“I hope people smell lavender. I’ve been obsessed by the lavender cleaning products for about a year now,” the transit honcho told the crowd, pointing out crews use the cleaners at Newark’s Penn Station overnight.

today I learned: scented laundry products contain the same chemicals as cigarettes and gasoline

Today I learned that scented laundry products contain thousands of chemicals--the same ones in cigarettes and gasoline. VOCs (volatile organic compounds), acetaldehyde, and benzene to name a few. These chemicals are known toxins that damage hormones and cause cancer. Label laws globally protect company profits, not consumers, so big businesses make millions a year selling water and chemicals and calling it detergent and fabric softener. It doesn't feel fair to not know what we are buying.

This video link explains some of it well, it is cheesy production value but the facts are there and I looked them up to verify, anyone else can too. Also, I'm not saying let's not use detergent or wash clothes! The video is talking about the history of the detergent and fabric softener industries, and why scented products hurt washing machines and plumbing because of the added plastics and waxes that coat everything over time. Laundry vent emissions from scented products are also making neighborhood air unsafe for people with asthma, or people who don't want to smell laundry stuff when they are outside. Google "scented laundry vent emissions," they are totally unregulated and bad for shared air.

I don't know about homemade detergent like in the video, I haven't tried it and probably never will. I use fragrance free powders from Nellie's or Branch Basics, with their oxygen boosters as needed, they cost about the same as scented products. Never had a problem, everything is clean. Some people say fragrance free doesn't clean as well, but I think this is with brands like All that cheap out and don't add the right enzymes.
