(Loved trope) the unsung hero!
X-Men: Days of Future Past has one of my very favorite scenes in Marvel cinema. Logan saves the past and returns to a present time that is completely different, but entirely embraced.
For years, the dystopian mutant genocide has ravaged the world. The X-Men are constantly running and fighting, always wondering who will die next. He has no idea if his time travel adventure is going to work, but its their only shot.
When he eventually awakens in the mansion, its like a dream. He can't believe it. Everyone is still alive, kids are running through the halls. He sees all his old friends and realizes that the plan worked. In his 150 year existence, he finally has something that he loves become restored to its glory. For once, Logan has peace. He has gratitude.
And he is the only one who will carry the weight of the knowledge and horrors of where (and when) he came from, and what he had to endure, just to save this timeline that no one else even realizes could've been so much worse. Even Professor X is surprised when he scans Logan's mind and realizes that this iteration of Logan is...different.
I just love that trope in story-telling that depicts a tragic protagonist who makes world-saving sacrifices that no one will ever know about. Its a weight that they must carry forever, in silence.
