Born on 26 February 1974 in Nangal, Punjab, Captain Amol Kalia was known for his determination, leadership, and passion for serving the nation. After joining the Indian Army, he developed expertise in mountain warfare, a skill that would prove crucial during the difficult battles of Operation Vijay. When Pakistani intrusions were detected in the Kargil sector in 1999, Captain Kalia and his men were tasked with recapturing Point 5203, a strategically important feature located at an altitude of nearly 17,000 feet in the Batalik-Yaldor sector. Leading from the front, he chose a difficult and unexpected route to approach the enemy position, displaying exceptional tactical skill and courage. Despite intense artillery shelling and heavy enemy fire, he successfully led his platoon in capturing the objective. When the enemy launched a fierce counterattack, Captain Kalia continued fighting alongside his men. Even after members of his machine-gun crew were killed, he personally took over the weapon and engaged the enemy, inflicting significant losses. During the battle, he sustained fatal injuries but continued to inspire his troops until his final moments. After joining the Officers Training School, Madras, he was commissioned into the Jat Regiment in 1982 and went on to earn a reputation as a fearless, professional, and highly respected officer. His leadership qualities, tactical acumen, and willingness to lead from the front made him admired by both his soldiers and senior officers. During Operation Rakshak in Jammu & Kashmir, Major Vikas Yadav participated in several successful operations against militants. His courage during the operations around Charar-e-Sharif became particularly well known, and his actions earned him recognition as one of the most effective officers operating in the region at the time. On 9 June 1996, acting on intelligence regarding the presence of militants, he led a search-and-destroy mission against heavily armed insurgents.
