I’m 18 and about to start university — what advice would you give me about life?

I’m 18 and about to start a Software Engineering degree at one of the best universities in my country. It’s a strong university locally, although it isn’t particularly well-known internationally, so I’m entering this next chapter with a lot of ambition but also a lot of uncertainty about how to make the most of it. Beyond academics and a career, I want to build a life with financial independence, meaningful relationships, good health, confidence, interesting experiences, and enough time to actually enjoy life. For those of you who are older or further ahead: what do you wish you knew at 18, what should I prioritize during my university years, and what mistakes would you strongly recommend avoiding?

How should I approach research as a freshman aiming for top grad schools?

I’m a Software Engineering freshman, and my classes haven’t even started yet. My long-term goal is a top grad school like Harvard, MIT, or Stanford.

I’m at NUST SEECS, which is among the strongest in Pakistan (QS ranks NUST #114 in CS and #132 in Engineering & Technology by subject).

If I want to become a strong grad-school/scholarship candidate, should I aim for something like 1 research paper per year (4 total), or focus more on doing fewer but genuinely high-quality research projects? Also, does NUST’s IEEE collaboration matter for research opportunities?

What would you recommend I focus on over the next 4 years? How should I approach research as a freshman aiming for top grad schools?

Complete beginner to hackathons — any advice?

I’m about to start college as a Software Engineering freshman and have never participated in a hackathon.

I’ve done CS50P and know very basic HTML/C++, but that’s about it 😭

I’m currently registering for the IBM Bob 2.0 Hackathon. Any tips on how I should start preparing and what I should learn first?

Would really appreciate advice! 🚀

what do j do

I transferred 700 PKR to an InDrive driver. And then he said, no, no, no, do not transfer money on SaadaPay because he does not remember his PIN. So when we logged in with his details on that number, he put in PIN and he did not remember the PIN. Now the forget PIN was not working because it was not asking for any details but telling us to go to the chat and, you know, confusing us. Is the guy me or should I transfer him again money?

Starting Software Engineering in 15 Days — Any Advice?

I’m a high school graduate starting my Software Engineering degree in 15 days at a university ranked around #114 globally for CS (QS).

I’ve completed Harvard CS50P and know some basic HTML/C++, but I’m still a beginner. I also have some theoretical knowledge of ML, tree traversals, overfitting/underfitting, etc.

My goal is to become an exceptional software engineer and eventually get into big tech.

If you were starting your bachelor’s again, what would you do differently? What should I focus on from Day 1 to become a strong candidate?
