Today I learned there was a Spanish republic in exile that existed until 1977. Then dissolved after Franco death and transition into a democracy.
However until then they waited for the Allie’s to eventually oust Franco and return democracy, exiles and them to power. Unfortunately the Allie’s and Britain didn’t want a potential second civil war after Franco secured diplomatic ties with the western nations to distance himself with the axis after seeing how things were going.
As communism took root the Allie’s changed their minds and believed having an ally against communism was better than nothing.
