Question regarding her hitscan primary (I might just be seeing things)

First of all, sorry if this is a dumb question, but I noticed something while practicing against moving bots in the practice range.

I could’ve sworn that sometimes her primary shot doesn’t feel completely consistent, especially while moving.i tend to get easier headshots when the enemy is moving to the right (if that adds any info)

Then I thought about Cyclops, who has a completely different issue with his primary because he shoots from his head rather than his hand, so I started wondering if Phoenix might have some kind of third-person shooter thing going on.

Because mainly Jean shoots with both hands. Could that potentially affect her bullet trajectory/pathway in any way, or am I just seeing things?

Thanks in advance!

Whatever state he’s in . He will always be the most fun dps in the game for me

I am just gonna say it . He feels so much like cyclops. But yeah i hope he gets buffed . I am mostly playing him and jean just because i love them .

I am so fed up with this role

Sorry for the long rant. I genuinely just needed to vent.

First of all, I genuinely respect and appreciate support players more than the other two roles. Always have, and probably always will. Some of the nicest players I’ve encountered in both Overwatch and Rivals have been support players.

For context, I came from Overwatch, where I played all three roles but eventually gravitated toward support and basically mastered every support hero. I’d occasionally play DPS hitscan and most tanks except dive, but support was always the role I enjoyed the most.

There’s just something about playing support in a hero shooter that I love.
But in Rivals? I am genuinely fucking done with it.

You are the punching bag for the entire game.
You get constantly dove and spend half the match playing survival simulator, often with absolutely no help from your team.
And the funny part is that even when you do a good job defending yourself, surviving dives and not needing much peeling, you can still get blamed for healing less.

Like… what exactly do you want me to do?
I can’t heal you while I’m fighting two divers trying to kill me.
No matter what I do, it somehow isn’t enough.
If I reach a high rank, I’m “boosted.”
Every support character is apparently either completely broken or a throw pick. There is seemingly no middle ground.

And yes, I know I shouldn’t care about what the community thinks. I know that. But I’ll admit that sometimes I do want to play a character that is generally accepted, appreciated and valued by the community.
So I tried Adam (as in the community’s eyes he’s the hardest)
I genuinely loved playing him. He’s one of the more mechanically demanding supports, so I spent a lot of time practicing my aim and actually put effort into getting good with him.
And somehow I’m still a throw pick because I don’t have an immortality ult.

What else am I supposed to do?
It’s just such a thankless role.
And playing support in Quick Play….Honestly, it’s torture.
You’re basically playing a free-for-all deathmatch where you’re the enemy team’s free meal because everyone and their mother is looking for the support and your own team is just doing the same . It’s just mini game for dive players .

And it feels like every piece of media surrounding this game has some way of taking a shot at support players.

The funny thing is that I’ve actually started insta-locking DPS in my placements lately, and I’ve been having an absolute blast.
I don’t even play dive. I mostly play hitscan.
And whenever I notice my supports getting constantly dove, I’ll immediately swap to an anti-dive DPS and start protecting them.

Because now that I’m playing DPS and tank more, I’ve realized something:
I play around my supports exactly how I wish my teammates would play around me when I’m supporting.
I play heavily around cover because I don’t want to force my supports to constantly heal me through terrible positioning.
And I am always peeling for my supports.
Even in Quick Play.
Because I know how fucking frustrating it is to spend an entire game getting dove while your team acts like you’re supposed to magically survive it.

And that’s probably the biggest difference I’ve noticed between Rivals and Overwatch.
Yes, supports get complained about in Overwatch too. Obviously.
But when I played support there, I felt like my utility and my plays were actually noticed. You could make a really good play, save someone, land important utility, enable your team, or make a clutch decision and actually feel appreciated for it.
In Rivals, it often feels like everything you do goes completely unnoticed.

Nobody notices the damage you prevented.
Nobody notices the utility you used.
They just notice that the healing number isn’t high enough.

I’m still going to play support.
But I’d be lying if I said I play it anywhere near as much as I used to.
Hell, even tank feels less stressful to me now.

So yeah currently as someone who played support less and less as time passes I realized that’s it’s the most stressful role to play and just not rewarding anymore for me honestly.

Sorry if this is a dumb question. Why couldn’t i turn invisible in the two jumps in the clip?

Again sorry if this is me being oblivious.

But it says in the patch notes that after i jump i have like a one second window that keeps me invisible even if i am taking damage . But in the clip i didn’t turn invisible in the first place.

Thanks in advance :)

Edit : from the answers in the comments it appears to be a bug . It should be fixed quick though , this is a whole ability we’re talking about😭.

Being a weak hero is one thing. Having your entire niche overshadowed is another

Long rant warning . Sorry in advance

The more I think about Phoenix’s current state, the more I feel like her biggest problem is different from most of the other weaker/neglected heroes.

Even when a hero is considered bad or low-tier, they usually have some sort of unique niche or playstyle that gives you a reason to pick them if you enjoy that particular archetype.

Take Mister Fantastic. He’s generally considered one of the weaker Duelists, but his kit has a very distinct identity. He’s especially good at dealing with dive because of his survivability and peel, and his primary attack gives him a unique form of pressure by piercing through enemies. He might not be the strongest pick, but his gameplay has its own identity.

Scarlet Witch was another example. She was weak for a long time, but her niche was very clear: relatively low mechanical demand, target tracking/lock-on pressure, and strong close-range burst. Thankfully, she’s getting a rework, so hopefully that gives her a buff in the right direction.

Then there’s Iron Man, who has his own archetype as a flying Duelist focused heavily on aerial positioning and AoE damage. Again, maybe not the strongest character, but if you specifically want to play a flying AoE damage dealer, there’s a reason to pick him.he’s still shit though and countered alot but my point still stands

And that’s the problem I have with Phoenix.
If I want to play a hitscan Duelist with a high-damage primary fire, an escape/mobility tool, AoE pressure and strong mid-to-long-range presence, why would I pick Phoenix when Hela exists?

Hela basically occupies the same general gameplay space while offering better damage output, better effective range, and a much more forgiving primary weapon.
Phoenix doesn’t really have a sufficiently differentiated niche to compensate for those shortcomings.
And it’s honestly depressing because she did have one.

Now she’s has tickle damage, horrible range, self heal which made her unique nerfed to the ground, horrible ult and the smallest bullet size in the dps roster.

A weak hero can still be fun because their kit gives you something unique. Phoenix currently feels like she’s caught in the worst possible middle ground: she doesn’t excel at the hitscan fundamentals, and she doesn’t have a strong enough unique niche to justify those weaknesses.

And I don’t necessarily want them to just slap a bunch of damage buffs on her and call it a day.
If anything, I want the devs to differentiate her from Hela.

These two characters have been compared for so long that even Phoenix at her strongest was jokingly described as “Hela with red hair.” That shouldn’t be her identity.
Give Phoenix a reason to exist beyond being the inferior version of another hitscan.
I just want to play my favorite character and feel like I’m not actively handicapping myself for doing it. 🥲

Don’t get me wrong, i still can make her work but if i am playing comp and want to bring the best value i can possibly give for the sake of my teammates , i am not picking phoenix.

Please please don’t write the infamous line “she has been meta for so long so it’s ok for her to be bad now” I disagree with this philosophy on any character . Every character should be viable regardless of their history. This can also be the opposite . If a weak character who was mostly weak and suddenly got buffed to be beyond OP ., the justification of saying “oh well they were weak for the longest so it’s fair that they’re broken now “ it’s still wrong

Edit: i forgot to talk about her team-ups . That’s how bad her team-ups are (at least compared to everyone else).

TL;DR: Other weak heroes at least have unique niches that can make them worth picking when you want a different playstyle. Phoenix doesn’t have that luxury because Hela occupies almost the exact same hitscan archetype while being substantially better at the fundamentals. Phoenix doesn’t just need buffs she needs a stronger identity that separates her from Hela.

A question from an inexperienced player: why does Jaeger not want me? 🥲

I personally consider myself inexperienced since I mainly play the few Trials I’m comfortable with, because I’m honestly not the best at horror games.

Anyway, me and my duo decided to play Psychosurgery as a joke, and Jaeger spawned.
The thing is… she didn’t come after me.
She just looked at my duo and went straight for her, completely ignoring me. Even when I was closer to her, she still chose my duo.

So naturally, I threw a brick at her.
SHE STILL CHOSE MY DUO.
I am offended. 🥲
She would only swing at me if I got really close, but other than that, I apparently did not exist.
Is something wrong with me? 🥲
Was this a glitch or does Jaeger just genuinely prefer my duo?
And yes, I am kind of jealous of my duo.
I just wanted to be chased too. 😭

F my i frames I guess, Black Cat just has to have the superior ones

Like i notice it happening every time I go for an evade I still get hit on the other side by her Phantom Pursuit... but Lord forbid you make her as targetable while she's in her i frames dealing tons of (clearly unavoidable) damage

Since everyone hates AI slop now, has your opinion on Mysterio changed?

But seriously though.Personally, Mysterio is one of my favorite MCU villains, which is probably an unpopular opinion. I also really loved Jake Gyllenhaal’s performance as him.

As a villain, he felt pretty unique and different. Not necessarily his origin story, though. His whole “bitter former Stark employee” thing is probably a very “get in line” origin story at this point.

What I mainly loved was that he caused SO much damage and was such a huge threat without really having to throw a single punch. The whole thing was based around illusions, manipulation, and getting inside Peter’s head.

And obviously, the aftermath of what he did to Peter’s life was probably the best part. Even after Mysterio was dead, the damage he caused completely changed Peter’s life going forward.

Just started X-Men: Evolution and Jean Grey is ridiculously likable

So I’ve recently taken a much bigger interest in the X-Men. I never grew up reading the comics or watching the animated shows.I mostly just watched the movies. so Jean Grey was honestly never a character I cared that much about.

Then Marvel Rivals happened. Jean is my main, so naturally I started getting curious about her character and decided to actually explore more X-Men media.

I watched X-Men ’97 first and really enjoyed it. Jean came across as incredibly kind and compassionate, which I really liked. The whole Scott/Jean/logan/Madelyne situation was definitely… something, though.

Now I’ve started watching X-Men: Evolution, and Jean has instantly become my favorite character. I’m still only in Season 1.

What I really like about this version is how much of her personality gets to shine outside of the superhero stuff. She’s friendly, confident, empathetic, and genuinely seems to care about the people around her. She also has this really nice balance where she’s compassionate without being a pushover.
And I really like her relationship with Scott so far. It feels much more like a genuine friendship that gradually develops rather than Jean just being defined by a love triangle. Also, I was pleasantly surprised by Logan’s relationship with her. He feels much more like a protective older-brother/mentor figure here, which I honestly really like.

That said, I’m a little confused about something.
This version of Jean feels very different from the latest movie (BND)

So for people who know the character much better than I do:
What is Jean Grey actually like in the comics, and which adaptation do you think captures her personality the best?

The Marvel Rivals Effect (A Positive Post)

Long read warning.

This is not a balance related discussion. While I’m aware that the game has its issues balance wise, I’m still optimistic about its future.

What I mainly want to talk about is the Marvel IP itself what it has done for the game, the community, and even people’s interest in Marvel as a whole. And honestly, I think it’s great.

I’ve said this before, but I think one of the biggest distinctions between Rivals and other hero shooters is that there’s a loyal fanbase behind almost every character. People are genuinely passionate about their favorite heroes.

Only in Rivals will you see people saying they’re going to main a character even though that character hasn’t even been confirmed for the game yet.

And while it’s awesome seeing people being genuinely passionate about their favorite heroes, I also think it’s interesting how Rivals gets people to step outside their comfort zone just because they love a particular character.

In other hero shooters, you might say you like a character’s design or personality and then try playing them. But I don’t think it’s quite the same as seeing someone say, “I don’t care what their role is or how they play. If they add my favorite character, I’m playing them.”

That feeling comes specifically from being attached to the character, rather than just the gameplay.
Another really cool effect Rivals has had is that it has genuinely shed a lot more light on lesser-known Marvel characters.

And what makes Marvel especially good for this is that almost every character has decades of lore and source material behind them. If Rivals introduces a character you know nothing about, there’s an entire rabbit hole of comics, shows, movies, and stories waiting for you.

I can actually speak from personal experience here.
Rivals has made me genuinely passionate and invested in the X-Men, and I say that as someone who previously mostly knew them from the movies. The X-Men never had quite as much presence in the movies I watched compared to the Avengers, so I never really went that deep into them.

Now I’m literally watching whatever animated X-Men shows I can find.

And that’s only talking about characters who were already somewhat known.
There are also characters who have become significantly more recognizable because of Rivals. Jeff is probably the biggest example. I didn’t even know he existed before Rivals, but now he’s probably one of the most recognizable characters in the game.

Magik is another example for me personally. I wasn’t particularly familiar with her before Rivals, but her design, personality, gameplay, and overall presence immediately made me interested in the character. And now I actually want to learn more about her.
I could honestly say the same thing about a lot of characters who aren’t Avengers.
Even characters who have already appeared in movies, like Susan Storm and Emma Frost, are examples for me. I technically knew who they were, but I never had much personal interest in them before Rivals. Playing them and seeing how the community interacts with them completely changed that.
And that’s why I think the Marvel IP is such a huge factor in this game’s success.

The developers aren’t working with a single universe that has a handful of characters. They have decades of Marvel history to pull from. Hundreds of characters, countless locations, teams, villains, storylines, and relationships.

And the best part is that Rivals can introduce someone you’ve never heard of and potentially make you want to go learn their entire history.

Even my own favorite Marvel characters list has changed because of Rivals. Some characters I barely cared about before are now characters I genuinely like, and some have climbed much higher on my personal favorites list simply because Rivals gave me a reason to engage with them.

That’s why, despite all of the game’s balance issues, I’m still optimistic about its future.
Of course, I’m still going to get excited whenever a really popular character gets announced. If they announce someone like Ghost Rider, I’m going to lose my mind just like everyone else.
But at the same time, I’m also completely open to characters I don’t know.

I’m sure some of you have similar experiences where you genuinely got invested in a character you barely knew because of Rivals.

Also, part of my optimism doesn’t come from the Marvel IP alone. It also comes from the devs themselves. Yes, I know they get a lot of hate, and there are definitely things they could improve on, but I think it’s very clear that they’re passionate about the game and genuinely care about what they’re building.
And honestly, I think having both a massive IP with decades of material to pull from and developers who are clearly passionate about the game gives Rivals a lot of potential moving forward.

u/Doableanimal90 — 2 months ago

Question for the Marvel fans: Are your favorite Marvel characters also among your most played heroes?

One thing I realized about Rivals that makes it different from other hero shooters is obviously the Marvel IP, but also the fact that some players will genuinely try to play their favorite characters even when their role or playstyle doesn’t really align with their personal preferences.
And honestly, I think that’s pretty cool.

u/Doableanimal90 — 2 months ago

Silly post, but I honestly love Sue’s voice lines

I know this is nothing major, but I’ve noticed something I really like about Sue’s voice lines.

In hero shooters like Marvel Rivals and Overwatch, heroes usually have at least a little bit of ego when interacting with each other. They’ll praise themselves, one-up each other, or just generally act confident about their abilities.

But Sue’s interactions with the other heroes are surprisingly sweet. There’s even one with Black Widow where Widow compliments Sue, and Sue genuinely seems surprised that she’s being praised before complimenting her right back.
And I’m sitting there thinking, there’s no way Sue is actually surprised by getting praise considering everything she’s accomplished and the things she’s capable of 😭. But honestly, it’s really wholesome.

The only character she seems noticeably less friendly toward is that creep Namor, which… yeah, understandable . Even then, she apparently has a positive voice line when she eliminates him on the enemy team. Like, how is she THIS nice?

Overall, I think Sue stands out a bit from the other heroes. A lot of them have that constant “I’m better than you” energy when interacting with each other, while Sue just seems genuinely humble and kind.

My favorite interactions are her with cap and spider-man

It’s a small thing, but I really like it. She’s just so sweet lol.

One thing i love about your mains

(silly and long post so i’d understand if you skip)

These are my personal opinions on what i love most about the mains of all heroes in the game
It can be a use of an ability-playstyle or just mentality i guess . I’ll try to keep it actually One thing to make it more decisive

-Angela: when she shish kabab multiple enemies at once .

-Adam warlock: everything. I know i said only one thing but come on it’s adam warlock

-Loki: when they play mindgames with their clones lol. Especially the fake swap .

-Gambit: card management. Although most would say the cleanse. But imo i love it when i see gambit players managing their cards overall.

-Invisible woman: clutch blocks with their shield . Love to see it every time

-Mantis: being aggressive and farming headshots

-White fox: winning a 1v1 against a dive dps

-Jubilee: being in their enhanced state 90% of the match

-Luna snow: canceling ults

-Stratpool:players who actually balance between being aggressive and healing their other support.

-Ultron: sniping dive

-CnD : clutch fades . (Assuming that people don’t shoot in their fade form )

-Rocket raccoon: unkillable raccoons who mastered movement

-Jeff the land shark: his ult. I know his ult isn’t that great but i had a lot of clutch wins because the jeff on my team pulled off a huge ult.

-Doctor strange: fat ults

-Magneto : canceling support ults . Yeah he counters dps ults but imo countering supp ults is much more valuable

-Emma frost : clutch chokeslams(to cancel ults or just grab the diver harassing the support)

Rogue:when she takes everything . But fr though i love it when rogue mains use her grab in the perfect situation. Although it’s on a long cooldown i always see rogue mains putting it to the best use

-Venom: love it when venom mains stay for several business days in the enemy backline, return to their supports for a quick recharge and repeat again.

-The hood: i haven’t played that much this season so i can’t say but so far i’ve seen some cracked hood players with goated aim.

-Tankpool :similar to strat pool . Knowing when to dive and when to poke .

-Thing: using cover . Yes i know using cover should be a universal thing but the good thing mains i see have the best awareness i’ve seen in the tank roster .

-Captain America: honestly i love the mentality of cap players. Imo cap has the lowest scoreboard effect in the entire game. The scoreboard isn’t everything i know , but most of the value cap has doesn’t show at all in the scoreboard. Much respect tbh

-Hulk: love it when hulk mains jump back to bubble their team after distracting the whole enemy frontline. (Enemy backline pressure and ally backline peeling . Perfectly balanced as all things should be)

-Thor: besides the aura. This one is mostly on console but i have mad respect for the thor players with high sensitivity to 360 kidnap enemies.

-Peni: rip. What i most loved is no longer there with us now . Let’s take a moment of silence before we proceed with the rest of the list

-Groot:i love it when groot players combo their ult with their dps

-Dino:grabbing random enemies and bringing them to his team so they can see what he caught.(we see you dino , good job)

-Punisher : zip line dive of doom

-Black panther: no

-Black cat:no

-Elsa: no

-Squirrel girl: no

-Bucky: hooks (especially when they hook ulting enemies)

-Magik: their ult. Not even a magik player at all but i am in the Magik subreddit specifically to watch any ult clip I see.will always be enjoyable to me

-Hela:when they start consistently clicking heads

-Starlord : when they have that flexible playstyle. One time you see them flanking suddenly they’re front-lining with the tanks then peeling for the support. Love it when they use that mobility to be all over the place and be where they’re needed

-Widow : the actual sniper mode.it’s good to see when the old widow players turn into raid bosses in their ult ( they had months of practice with the neutral kit)

- dps pool: when they turn into ninja mode

-wolverine:bullying tanks

-mister fantastic:their peeling is just fantastic

-human torch : when they turn into Neo from the matrix but in the sky

Moonknight: not depending on ankhs

-namor: when they do high pressure from their primary .

-spiderman: off map pulls

-storm: team buffs are always goated

-scarlet witch: don’t really like her that much on my team but every now and then i see a really good ult

-hawkeye : intentional headshots

-Iron man: using their bad ult to cancel a support ult
(Seriously if you manage to get value of that ult you’re goated)

-Iron fist : when they have good parkour skills

-Cyclops : using movement abilities creatively

-blade :how badass they look while slicing at max speed

-Daredevil:combos always look clean to me

-Psylocke: putting the invisibility ability to good use . I know it’s on a low timer so i have respect for players that are able to dip quickly after an encounter.

-Phoenix: overwhelming the enemy team with sparks. Love it when i see a Phoenix main able to consistently apply The AOE explosions more frequently.gives the rest of the team a lot of room to work with (i am biased tbh)
