Have you heard about Wizard Magazine’s Ultimate DC Comics?

Information gathered from This post on the Cultured Nerd, credit to Ben Hurley for compiling this.

The basic rundown is in 2003 Wizard Magazine got some artists together & had them make a series of pitches on what a hypothetical Ultimate DC comics line might look like.

Batman: Overall seems to be a fairly standard reworking of the Batman mythos, possibly inspired by Year One. The more interesting things to note are Barbara & a pre Two-Face Harvey dating & the Joker as a murderous & seemingly Punisher like vigilante which honestly reminds me of the Vigilante Joker path in the Telltale games & honestly would be neat to see in an Elseworld.
Superman: Explicitly inspired by Smallville, sort of like a hypothetical sequel to the series, but where Lex already knows Clark is Superman (though he doesn’t want to believe it) which is pretty interesting in my opinion. The Brainiac thing is pretty cool too (though it does bring to mind Zod’s plot in Man of Steel)
Wonder Woman: Ok this one is just bad. Leaving aside the nose guard mask, weird tied corset & studded loincloth, the plot about her being sent as a spy to conquer Man’s world just turns me off of it instantly (feels like another Amazons Attack)
The Flash: For some reason Barry is now in Los Angeles which is fine but some of the ideas like Jay as a Detective, Murmur as an obscure pick for a first villain & a future Wally West becoming the Black Flash (but also a seeming equivalent to Reverse Flash/Zoom) is intriguing. The costume isn’t that good though but it’s nowhere near as bad as Diana’s
Green Lantern: Making John the Green Lantern I’m honestly fine with but the writer basically treats him as a stand in for Hal down to Sinestro being his mentor figure though the first arc though the twist of him having already killed the guardians is neat!
Teen Titans: This is also pretty bad. Luthor making a super team to combat the Justice League is a neat idea but making it the Titans just confuses me. Dick (sorry Rich) is no longer an orphan & just looking to escape the circus, Donna is retitled Power Girl, Roy Harper is now Green Arrow (& learned his skills on an “Indian reservation” which is just… yikes)… the whole thing seems like a takedown of the idea of teen superheroes which just reeks of bad writing.
JLA: Assembled by a little green version of J’onn to fight an oncoming Despero, the league, along with a female Atom, assembles & managed to successfully defeat him. It also states that they go through a Tower of Babel arc where Batman defeats all the other members before the Key opens the gates of hell (which actually sounds pretty fun)

Overall a real mixed bag in my opinion, some good ideas but mostly either meh or bad. I’m glad this wasn’t a serious pitch & we eventually got the Absolute Universe but what do you think? Was there anything salvageable in this?

What if Image had a big horror crossover similar to Marvel Zombies or DC vs Vampires?

Since it’s the spooky month I got around to reading some horror comics & I noticed I don’t think Image had ever had a big horror event in the same style as Marvel Zombies, DCeased or DC vs Vampires which got me thinking, what if it did?

What sort of massive horror crossover would you like to see featuring the various Image heroes (imagine that they all exist in a large universe like they used to before they started becoming more separate), what monster would be the main antagonistic force? Who would be a survivor & who would be killed?

The main idea I had is based on The Astounding Wolf Man’s curse mutating & turning people into Were-Beasts rapidly creating paranoia where you don’t know who is still human & who is an unknowing were-monster that could suddenly turn into an unstoppable beast. But there are other ways you could do it, I’d love to see a Cthulhu like horror event, maybe a Hell on earth apocalypse?

Why does AJ Bell want us to equate them with massive amounts of destruction?

I keep getting these short but annoying ads for an insurance company & in all of them they have the same annoying “Ring my Belllelllelll” music & people just fucking running people over, blowing things up & crashing through walls. I think it’s meant to make them look happy but it just makes them look like lunatics engaging in property damage.

What is your favourite Fantastic Four parody/homage?

There’s been a lot of homages & parodies of the family over the years but I want to know which one is your favourite homage to Marvel’s First Family?
Personally for me it’s a tie between Pixar’s Incredibles & Astro City’s Furst Family for both being such loving homages to the original. I also like the short lived Mystery Incorporated from Image’s 1963 (very underrated) which were a great parody of the early days.

Who is your favourite Darklord & Domain & why is it your favourite?

Who are your favourite darklords be they from any edition or era of the mists & why do you like them in particular ?

My favourite is probably Viktra Mordenheim because I love the book Frankenstein & after buying the 5E Van Richten’s Guide I was interested by her & I read Orphan of Agony Isle soon after. Science in a primarily magical setting always stands out to me & I like the frostbitten mad science vibes of Lamordia!

I also like Flimira Vhage, though I admit a lot of it is projection since we only have the bare bones info on her but that gives me a lot of room to explore & make things up, running a noir adventure sounds fun & the Vhage Agency (killer name btw) can act as a fun “hub level” for a party due to her various mist talismans.

A less serious favourite of mine is Yagno Petrova purely for comedic reasons because he’s probably the most devout man in the mists & it’s to a god that explicitly doesn’t exist.

What would be a good/interesting Squad that could take on the Hitman: World of Assassination series?

Picture that instead of the ICA, the Suicide Squad are picked to perform the various assassination jobs in the World of Assassination trilogy, who would make good replacements, how far could they feasibly get & can they successfully dismantle Providence?

This isn’t a strict rule but to keep things interesting you can only have 8 members on your team & they can’t all be “gun men” (Bloodsport, Deadshot, Peacemaker etc) you only get one or two. You should also try to be varied with members who are good at infiltration as well as strength.

[DISCUSSION] How do you prefer/picture Krypton?

If you were given the opportunity to write a version of Krypton before its destruction what would it look like, not just visually but politically?

Do you prefer it to look retro-futuristic (like the Silver Age Comics), Crystalline & ethereal (like the Donner movies), high tech & semi organic (Man of Steel) or pure alien & unlike anything on earth?

And how are the Kryptonians as a people, are they utopian scientists, militant warriors, separated by class, something else?

And what ends up destroying Krypton? Actions caused by the Kryptonians, a cosmic disaster like Rao going supernova, a galactic war against Apokolips or Brainiac drones? How many people actually manage to escape Krypton?

In my own headcanon I like to think of Krypton as once being a utopia on its way to becoming a home for multiple sentient species across the galaxy as an intergalactic peacemaker but eventually due to power struggles & unrest caused by the various houses it first became a totalitarian world refusing any alien help, even from lantern assistance. Eventually the planet reaches a tipping point when it encounters enemies & having squandered its resources & having no allies the resulting clash, using weapons such as Eradicators & Brainiacs turn Krypton into an apocalyptic wasteland with only a few living survivors remaining on Krypton, a few probes (such as Kal-El’s) managing to escape, and the remnants of the corrupted science/war division still engaging in pointless battles.
