When the JSA (99-06) compendiums wrap up, would they give the same treatment to Justice Society of America (2007-2011)?

Just pre-ordered compendium 2, and it collects up to around issue 51 (plus some extra goodies obviously) so one more compendium should finish off that volume. If compendiums 2 and 3 sell well enough, do you think there’s a possibility they’d give the same treatment to the next series? I know it’s not nearly as well received, but for completions sake I’d love to have a few compendiums of that in my collection. DC have collected worse runs before, and this series could be wrapped up in 2 compendiums.

How old is Backlash supposed to be?

***(Warning: I’ve only read up to the Warblade mini series using the Weathering Wildstorm reading order. Do not spoil me on any comics beyond this point.)***

So in Stormwatch they call him an old man, and in a lot of other comics featuring Marc they do the same. In Team One, he’s a young 20-something dude in the airforce, though his hair still being white means one of two things; either premature greying or he’s secretly the kid of someone like Zealot or Prometheus.

Team One takes place in the early 60’s, which means that about 10 years later the events of Team 7 happen and he gets his powers. This goes against my theory that he could be a Kherubim hybrid because he didn’t have powers before being exposed to the Gen-factor. He would be in his 30’s around the team 7 days, and all 3 minis take place across around 3 years, so let’s say mid 30’s.

Then 20 years later, the Wildstorm universe really kicks off. Marc would be in his early to mid 50’s at this point, which I guess justifies being called an old man by a bunch of 20-30 year olds. I swear there was a line at some point where someone says that Marc’s aging is weird, and a retcon saying he’s actually got slowed aging or something wouldn’t be out of the ordinary.

But yeah, is my estimation accurate?

My thoughts on Wildstorm 2

I made a post about my thoughts a little while back, but I’ve read a bit more (Wetworks #1 to Stormwatch #7 using the Weathering Wildstorm reading order) and boy, do we have a high high, middling middles and very low lows?

Wet Works… I wanted to like it so bad. It looked so cool. Golden symbiote armour clad military dudes fighting vampires? Sounds great, but it makes no sense, and it doesn’t do anything to make me care about anyone except Dane, who was in Team 7.

I realised today though that the symbiote the team wear is functionally useless. It can withstand a lot of force and makes the user functionally bulletproof, until they get hit by too many bullets across the body, which then begins to break through the barrier because the symbiote is spread too thin. Ok, makes sense. We need a weakness so they aren’t just godly. But then in issue 3, Flat Top and Crossbones are killed because turns out the vampires have psychic powers and can turn the symbiote into goo, allowing them to kill the user. The symbiote is worse than just going in with normal skin. It doesn’t seem to give advanced strength (at least from what I remember) it’s just durability. Punches and kicks are probably tougher, but I don’t get the point of it.

Other than that, the characters are all very weak. The idea of the blood queen sitting back and letting wet works sort out her problem for her is cool I guess. I like Portacio, his art is cool, but wet works is the weakest book so far.

What else… oh yeah Wildcats trilogy. Cool little Zealot focused mini. It was decent. In between issues Voodoo got a new suit which is suspiciously similar to Jean Grey’s 90’s suit. Also this is the second time Spartan has been completely destroyed.

Deathblow is burdened by sharing a book with Cybernary. Each issue is only around 10 pages so they have to try cramming stuff in. Overall though I like the idea of Cray resigning himself to death, whether that be by brain tumour or battle.

Stormwatch has been decent. I read the Stormwatch Special, which included two stories. The first has a really unintentionally funny page. Basically the team got to another dimension where Battalion shacks up with a princess. They find a portal to go back home, but Battalion puts an arm around his girl and is like “You’ll have to drag me through that portal kicking and screaming.” HE THROWS AWAY EVERYTHING IN HIS LIFE FOR A GIRL HE’S KNOWN FOR A DAY. How good was the night before? If she hadn’t been killed on the very next page, he would’ve abandoned his brother, mother and stormwatch for some alt dimension princess. The second story showed Diva’s origin story after she bumps into the singing coach she blinded as a child. It’s nice that they’re finally fleshing out the other members of Stormwatch one, but part of me wishes she got to make amends with the guy instead of running off. Fuji also got a throwaway narration box about his past as a sumo wrestler. Hellstrike straight up gets his head crushed during the Gamorra arc, and while I know from the Ellis run that he’s living energy and didn’t die, it’s weird that he just doesn’t show up again and no one seems the slightest bit concerned. Stormwatch Prime being saved was neat, but I don’t know where Sunburst came from. They made it seem before like the original team was just Battalion, Flashpoint, Nautika and Backlash. I hate Backlash for the shit he pulled in Team 7, but he’s sick design and power wise.

NOW WE GET TO THE DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH: UNION.

Holy shit Union was a breath of fresh air after Wetworks. In 5 issues (0-4) we get a well developed, sick looking hero, a whole bunch of history about his species, he finds love, he finds meaning, he makes allies, it’s great. The art was great too, and the covers were superb. Best believe I’m waiting with bated breath for vol 2. I believe Union joins Stormwatch at some point, so I’m psyched for that.

I’ll probably continue with the order tonight. Now I’m on the Wildcats x CyberForce crossover.

AITA for wanting the seating arrangements to change when we go back home?

So me and my family went on vacation on the 10th and we’re here until next Monday. Me, my mother, nephew and two nieces went up by car while my sister went by train since there is no more space in the car. Nephew is 3, Niece 1 is 2 and Niece 2 is 6 months.

On the drive up to our resort, I was placed in the back middle seat in between my two nieces, while my nephew sat in the passenger seat. Add in all of our items that were stuffed in the back, and I was crushed between the two girls with my knees up to my chin due to the weird bump in the floor of the car in front of the middle seat. Mind you, I’m 6’2, so I need space to function. The reason for the seating arrangement is because my nephew and niece 1 fight a lot, and my mother didn’t want that happening on the way up, because we wouldn’t have many chances to separate them.

The ride was around 4 hours, and when I tell you I couldn’t move, I couldn’t move. My only options to stretch was to reach my arm around the back of the girls’ seats, and obviously I went numb after an hour or two of sitting.

Eventually, niece 2 began crying, and I was frantically trying to calm her down. That on top of the pain of being crushed and sat in one place for several hours made me start crying, and I begged my mother to pull over and let me out. She told me that as soon as she saw somewhere to pull over, she’d let me switch seats with my nephew, and i could stretch for a good 10 minutes. This never nhappened, despite us passing by two gas stations and me continuing to beg from the back seat. Eventually I was left having to hover myself over the middle seat to try relieving the pain, and when we finally got to our resort I scrambled out.

I talked to my mother the other day about changing the seats on the drive home, asking to be in the front because obviously I don’t want to break down again. She said point blank no, because my nephew and niece 1 will argue and hit each other. I told her that she broke her promise to let me out on the ride up, so I somewhat deserved (and needed) the seat. She changed the subject as she always does, and we haven’t talked about it since.

TDLR; I want the passenger seat due to the hellish experience of being stuck in-between my nieces in the back and my mother won’t let me.

How old are legionnaires anyway?

I finished the issue of the Bates run where Bouncing Boy and Duplicate Girl get married, and I’m wondering how old they’re supposed to be at this point. I know that Legionnaires have to retire somewhere around 18-20, and Sun Boy turned 17 in a previous issue, so Bouncing Boy and Duplicate Girl are probably a similar age. Are marriage laws just weird in the 30th century or something?

(Also Martian Manhunter was there, how old is he at that point???)

My thoughts on WildStorm so far

So I began my quest to read all of WildStorm recently, using the Weathering WildStorm guide.

So far I’ve read all 3 team 7 series’, issues 1-3 of Stormwatch plus the Urban Storm short story and issues 0-4 of WildC.A.Ts.

My thoughts so far are… god they’re so 90’s! Women breaking their back when they pose, guns like leaf blowers and costumes so overkill they can’t be take seriously at all.

But more seriously, I think what I’ve read so far has been entertaining, but there are a lot of obvious issues already. First off, very weak characterisation. Team 7 was good character wise imo, with each member getting their time to shine and give you an insight on their perspective and pasts. Stormwatch and WildCats tho are a whole other ballpark.

The women get it the worst. Void doesn’t do much in the first arc aside from spout prophecy and teleport. Voodoo is a prophecy piece and again, doesn’t do much other than be saved and save Maul. Zealot is probably the best so far because she kicks ass and doesn’t let anyone put her down, but still, she’s pretty scantily clad, but again, 90’s.

Stormwatch aside from Jackson get the short end of the stick too. They’re just introduced, you see them in fights and nothing else. I get that this was the 90’s and action was the seller, but would it kill to have them get a drink or something and let us learn more about these characters?

Overall tho I’m not hating WildStorm so far. The art is good, the stories are a good level of cheesy and can get laughs out of me, and I’m safe in the knowledge that it’ll get better soon. My favourite characters so far are Lynch from Team 7, Warblade from Wildcats and Christine from Stormwatch. I’m on vacation so I’ve taken a break from WildStorm, but best believe I’ll get right back in when I get back.

Confused with Team 7: Objective: Hell.

So I’ve just started reading using the Weathering WildStorm guide, and I’m currently on Objective: Hell.

I’ve finished issue 1 and Cray and Lynch reunited with the deserters. Why is Slayton there? I thought Slayton went back to I.O at the end of the first Team 7 book. Did he have a change of heart or something?

(Don’t spoil anything else beyond issue 1. I’ve gone into this mostly blind.)

What is the perfect QOTSA/TCV playlist for a 3 hour drive?

I’m going on vacation tomorrow and I’m trying to decide what to play on the way up. I’m gonna be stuck with my mother, nephew and two nieces.

I wanna make a perfect drive QOTSA/TCV playlist, and no, I’m not just gonna repeat SFTD over and over. I want suggestions for the perfect playlist, taking songs from every qotsa album and tcv self titled.

Any and all songs are valid. Have at it.

Is reading all of Wildstorm (1992-2011) worth it?

So I’m currently speeding my way through the last books in my physical comic collection, and my plan for after I finish up is to begin reading all of Wildstorm from 1992-2011. Every issue, every annual, every event.

I found a list on LOCG that gives a chronological order of every Wildstorm comic from 92-03, and they’re apparently compiling a part 2. I’ve had fun with a lot of Wildstorm titles, mainly Stormwatch, Authority and what I’ve read so far of Mr Majestic.

I kid you not, the first two issues of Mr Majestic by Casey and Holduin may be my favourite comics ever. I get emotional thinking of them cause they’re just that good.

So am I in for more bad than good? Will this be hellish or will I find a lot of hidden gems?

Supposed to go on vacation with my mother and sister in a few days and I’m having some regrets about it

I (17F) am set to go on a vacation with my mother (60) and sister (24) on the 10th. My sister is of course bringing along her 3 kids (3,2, 6 months) and it sounded absolutely fantastic when it was first set up. We’re gonna spend a week at our favourite holiday park, we’ve got all these activities booked, it was great.

And then I remembered how my mother and sister argue like they have nothing else better to do with their lives. Since I could first form memories, they’ve always been arguing, and I’ve had many moments where I just can’t take the arguing anymore and I end up getting mad too. It’s a mess.

The first nail in the vacation coffin was just the other day. Basically my sister had to get two of her kids some shots so I looked after the remaining one at her place. Our mother drove her up to the place, and apparently my sister started driving her crazy by suddenly changing plans and asking to go to all these shops, and they got back later than expected. My mother runs into a friend while at my sister’s house, they talk a bit, and when that person leaves, my mother tells me to get in the car. My sister (still stood outside her house next to the car) knocks on the window, making my mother snap and scream at her, calling her a bastard and saying it wasn’t funny because she was ticked off and sleep deprived. Most of the drive home was complaining about my sister.

The second incident happened today, because my sister came over (with her kids) to help my mother paint her bedroom, which was long overdue. We want to get as many jobs done as possible before we go on vacation, since by the time we get back summer break will be nearly over and we want to relax a bit before going back to work/college. So she comes over, I look after the kids while she helps with the bedroom, and eventually I hear my mother scream about how she fucked it up or whatever, and soon after they came trotting down the stairs to get the kids ready to go back home. I just kinda sat there as they continued to argue while grabbing the kids, and when they left, I cleaned up the living room a bit before going to bed. Turns out my sister didn’t paint one of the walls properly and now it looks patchy and unfinished.

I’m dreading the vacation now. How will I still be sane after a week of them arguing (IN PUBLIC) while I have to sit there and try to enjoy the occasion? Luckily we aren’t all staying in the same accommodation. Basically this is a holiday park where you stay on the site in various apartments or bungalows for the duration of your stay. Me, my mother and my nephew are staying in one place while my sister and her two daughters are in another. We’ll be spending most of every day together though, and she’ll really only be in her accommodation at night. My best hope to enjoy my vacation is to grab my headphones, turn up the music and try to ignore it.

I hate my family sometimes.

Heimdall plot hole in Jurgens run

He just shows up in issue 13 after the whole dark gods mess with no explanation as to where he came from or where he was. Was he down in the mines with Volstagg, Faendal and Hogun? Was he hidden somewhere? It makes no sense.

I’ve really enjoyed the series so far (it’s greatly improved and I’ve come to like Thor’s outlook on humanity) but I’m a real stickler for plot holes, and it makes zero sense to me.

I have an issue with Jurgens Thor

I’m only 4 issues in but I have a massive issue with how Thor reacts to having a new human secret identity.

So he dies, gets told that if he wants to come back he has to atone for Jake’s death, agrees, comes back, realises what situation Jake was left in and immediately says “Oh ok, I’ll do this right.” But then, he gives up like an hour or two later and says “Oh well, sucks he died, but the mortal life just ain’t for me.” He fully intends to just abandon Jake’s life and his loved ones until Marnot tells him there would be consequences.

So he agrees to pick up Amanda from school, goes on his merry way, then a villain attacks so he gets into a scuffle and has to get saved by Namor, and then he just decides halfway through “Ok so being Jake Olson actually sucks. Hey Namor, do you wanna go get a brewski?” And he doesn’t get to Amanda who was being hassled by thugs. Demetrius has to go get her and we already know he’s up to something.

He goes home as Jake, Hanna is like “what the hell is going on where were you?” and Jake is just like “Well I went to the school but Amanda was gone, my bad.” And then when she questions him as to why he’s acting this way, he breaks character and says “Yeah I’m not built for this, good luck, I’m sorry.” And he flies off to go drink and we get some narration about how lonely he is.

My issue with this is not that Thor feels out of his depth. This isn’t Donald Blake. This isn’t Sigurd Jarlson. This is a new person with a family and a lot of details that Thor doesn’t know about. My issue is that Thor just gives up so early. He knows the human experience, he’s loved humans, some of his best friends are humans, and yet he gives up after only a day? He storms off in the middle of the conversation, and while yes he apologises and laments that he simply isn’t Jake, I’m sorry, but that isn’t good enough in this moment.

I also get that he’s lost Asgard, tensions are high, but right there, in that moment, he has to put Jake’s life first and at the very least try to get into a good rhythm in this new life.

I don’t know if I’m just yelling at clouds here but it feels like Thor isn’t Thor in this moment. He’s throwing away his bond with humans. If I’m wrong, or if the series improves on this later on, please tell me. I like a lot of aspects of this run, it’s just that this isn’t one of them

I make people uncomfortable with my nerdiness.

This happened a while back but I started thinking of it again lately.

Basically I was just starting college and I take English and I was sat next to this girl for the first week. I tried talking to her a few times though it felt really awkward and she obviously didn’t like the class.

One day I notice her drawing spider-man in her book, so I mustered up the courage to ask if she liked comics since I love comics and I had literally no friends in college at this point. She told me she doesn’t really and only watched the spider-man movies.

I told her how the night before I won a bunch of comics in an auction, and she nodded and said “yeah, thats cool.” And she looked so uncomfortable and tense. I turned away and didn’t talk to her for the rest of the class, and the next day she’d dropped out of the course.

I’ve finished my first year of college and I’m now on break before my second year but I still don’t sit with anyone else in that class because I don’t like them and they don’t like me much. I kind of ruined my reputation when I stormed out of class and left the building for several minutes once. I have ‘friends’ in other classes sure but I don’t think they actually like me and I’m a naturally paranoid person who constantly believes someone is only treating me nicely because they were told to or there’s some deeper reason.

I don’t know if she was made uncomfortable by me or if she’s just naturally awkward (like me) but either way it made me sit down and think “I wouldn’t wanna be rambled to by me either.”

Is my run over?

I feel embarrassed even posting this because yeah, it probably is.

Basically I had a Nidoking, Hitmonchan and Gastly. I wanted to train them up for Koga, so I switch trained Gastly.

Gastly was killed by a pursuit while doing this. I then managed to win the fight with Hitmonchan, but it got poisoned. In my grief over losing Gastly, I ran back to a Pokémon centre to put it in the box and Hitmonlee died of poison damage.

I caught a Venonat on one of the routes outside of Fuschia and began training up Nidoking while Venonat sat in the daycare. I managed to find a Ditto, catching it by the skin of my teeth. Nidoking then ended up dying (I think to a flying type) and I was absolutely crushed.

Ditto died soon after when I was trying to find a new Pokémon on a route west of Fuschia. I now literally only have a Venonat left and I don’t know if the run is even feasible anymore.

I have some water and other routes to go to, but I’m woefully underlevelled. Maybe I should keep Venonat in the daycare and try to get it up to 40, then go get some new team members and see if I can make things work, but i feel so stupid for losing so many Pokémon.

I’ve nearly filled a box with the amount of dead Pokémon. I’m stressed out and I don’t want to grind but I know I have to to even attempt the 5th gym. Should I just give up and restart or try to rebuild?

Run update: Surf and a Dream

When I last posted, I was prepping for Erika’s gym, and it’s all been downhill since.

I went in with Primeape, Voltorb and Doduo. I decided against getting Abra because technically I already got a Pokémon in Celadon with the gift Eevee. Primeape and Voltorb got murdered by Erika’s Vileplume, but their sacrifice wasn’t in vain and I got the badge.

My Vaporeon and Doduo (which evolved soon after) wiped the Rocket Hideout with ease. The plan now was to go to the Pokémon tower, get a Gastly, go to Fuscia for a Safari zone encounter and then go to Saffron for a hitmon from the fighting gym. We got Gastly, got the Pokémon flute, I decided against using Snorlax because I think static encounters like that are too easy (and I’ve broken enough rules already), and we got to Fuscia but not after Dodrio died due to the barrage of trainers on the road to the town.

I got to the safari zone and managed to get a Nidorino, which I’ve wanted since Route 3. I immediately used a moon stone on it, got surf and strength, taught it both and left to go get my Hitmon.

So… turns out… the fighting dojo plays no games. The leader had level 37 Pokémon and my highest level was 35 on Vaporeon. My Vaporeon died to Hitmonlee and I had to poison point stall with Nidoking to win. I got Hitmonlee and left, but morale is at an all time low.

I need to grind a whole lot. The level cap is now 43 so I aim to get everyone up to about 40 before going to Silph Co. I can get Lapras there and it should be a handy team member. There are also a few routes I haven’t gotten an encounter from, so I should check those out and hopefully get a few spares in my pc in case the worst happens and Blue or Sabrina murders me.

Wish me luck.

What do I do for Erika? (LeafGreen)

So I caught a few new mons to prep for the gym, including Vulpix, Doduo and I obviously got the gift Eevee, which I evolved into Vaporeon.

Due to my own incompetence, Vulpix died to a rattatta (I think they’ve killed at least 3 of my Pokémon it’s pathetic) and now I’m a tad worried for the gym.

My team is Primeape, Voltorb, Doduo and Vaporeon. Are there any routes where I can get a psychic type perhaps? An Abra would be great. If not, I’ll go in with Primeape (which has aerial ace) Voltorb and Doduo for the gym.

I feel like the walls are closing in and my nuzlocke is coming to an end

So I last posted here about training for the water gym in LeafGreen. I had Charmeleon, Mankey, Bellsprout and Magikarp.

Magikarp was ohko’d by a bellsprout because I wasn’t paying attention and attacked instead of switching out. I moved on though, and managed to steamroll the gym with Weepinbell.

I took the journey to Vermillion, grabbing a Meowth on the way. My Charmeleon died against a Raticate somehow, and I was absolutely furious. Then, once in Vermillion, I got a Spearow and a Diglet inside Diglet Cave. However, as I went to leave, I encountered another Diglet which had arena trap, so my poor, underlevelled Meowth was doomed. After a magnitude 8, Meowth fainted.

I feel like the walls are closing in. I’m absolutely terrified to step foot on the S.S Anne, especially knowing that my strongest Pokémon (Weepinbell) is vulnerable to psychic and flying, types that Blue has in bulk.

I’m fine for LT Surge, but my team is incredibly limited. All I can really do is train up to the level cap (24) and hope for the best.
