Narratively speaking, Lone Survivor has got to be one of the worst goddamn horror games I've ever played
If you haven't heard of this game, I don't blame you. Basically, it's about a zombie apocalypse that's actually a young man's delusions brought on by his survivor's guilt after a bus bombing that killed his girlfriend. And depending on your choices, you can either
- Have him kill himself(Red Pill ending)
- Have him either further sink into his delusions or pass away peacefully, it's not clear(Blue pill ending)
- Have him be able to move on and live a normal life(Green pill ending)
- Have him achieve a higher conscious state... maybe(White pill ending)
- Have him throw a dance party(Yellow pill ending, available after the white pill ending)
Now, this has the opportunity to be an experience reminiscent of Jacob's Ladder(though I have gripes with it all being a dying dream) though given that it's monsters are reminiscent of Lying Figures from Silent Hill 2, I believe it might be trying to ape one of the most critically acclaimed pieces of horror media of all time(AND BOY HOWDY DOES IT EVER). So, the "symbolism" is basically just throwing a bunch of random shit together and expecting your audience to understand it when you've got no goddamn idea what any of it means unless you're willing to look past the god awful presentation.
Actually, now that I think about it, the gameplay takes a major hit as well with the best endings being gate kept by a specific set of actions you must undertake daily in order to preserve your mental health... which you wouldn't even know unless you consulted a guide, and even then trying to keep all the tasks together is an ordeal in and of itself that if you can you're better off seeking out the green ending as it's the only one that suggests you've recovered from your insanity. Overall, while the horror is definitely solid, it's hard to care about anything with nothing makes any lick of sense. I mean, I strive to get the best ending I can in the games I play with multiple endings(whilst allowing myself to take much needed breaks, as they're just hobbies after all), but the way I have to do them makes playing Fear And Hunger on Hardcore mode seem less daunting by comparison. Hell, I'd argue that Dark Deception is easier to S-rank than it is to get the green or white endings. That is, if you get lucky and it doesn't spaz out on you from all the bugs that have gone unpatched that will likely remain unpatched or made even worse in the remake update that will finally usher in the long awaited fifth chapter of the game whenever it releases... that almost nobody's gonna care about because of all the delays. A shame, it's such an interesting concept: Pac-Man as a survival horror game.
On the off-chance that someone here has played it, what are your take aways from Lone Survivor?
