Using art for motivation in 6th grade math

I tried an experiment last year. Seeing as the kids really enjoy Prodigy I thought I could put my own spin on it. RPGs usually have classes of characters so I picked some personal favorites to represent our class and I personified each unit as a villain to fight. Rock Lee from Naruto was our warrior (determination) Link from Zelda was our archer (courage) Katara from Avatar Last Air Bender was our healer (flexibility in problem solving) and Frieren was our mage (patience). I created a world, Numeria and drew it out in the room for everyone to follow along and showed them how to calculate their own level based on scores from homework and tests. I even made animations on the whiteboard and hand crafted study guides with the characters battling the mathematical enemies. And no one cared. Any thoughts on how to be more successful if I try next year? Did I go too far? I don't want to make it mandatory, but I thought the kids would get into it. Anyone else have similar experiences?

Also, the animations were directly referenced from existing shows, I just changed the characters and the door is also referenced from existing images.

Link in the Fire Temple - Incomplete - Technical difficulties

So I was trying to make a series of the boss battles from Ocarina of Time starting with my favorite. Things were going great and then my interactive display burned out on me : ( This was as far as I got. Still pretty happy with it. Heavily influenced by FLCL and GAINAX as well as the 2D Kairos trailer.

Carl Stencil - unfinished (2008)

Found this unfinished stencil I was making about 18 years ago. Need to finish it, and then let the world know what Carl does and doesn't need.

Finished 15 chapter Yoda backstory with OC - The Quiet Lesson

I recently finished a fanfiction about a young Yoda. I pictured him growing up on the streets as a scrapper/street urchin until he crosses paths with a Force-using anomaly. I made a secret subreddit for it so only people interested in checking out my profile might stumble upon it, but I'd really like to hear what people think. It's a slow burn, philosophical story. Very little action. If that still sounds interesting I'd be grateful for some feedback. It's about 15,000 words. I'll post a link in the comments. Thank you for your time!

Canti and Guitar (2025) reproduction of image found online

Found this image online, not sure the name exactly but I included a closeup of their signature. This was one of the most recent pieces I did for my classroom to teach these youngsters about some good ole anime. Love me some Canti! I used thick smears of watercolor with a small amount of water for the textured look

Moana - hand drawn reproduction of my wife's favorite shot - birthday gift

We both love this shot from the film. The cute curiosity of Moana and the playfulness of the ocean with such a perfect song playing in the background. It's so well done! I paused the movie and then painted this from the screenshot for her birthday.

To Bboy or not to Bboy... the age old dilemma

I didn't quite make the lineup to compete on stage, but we all went for the preliminaries to try and get one of the spots. We came with it, but of course so did every other crew in Korea at the time (Gamblerz, Rivers Crew, T.I.P, Extreme Crew, Jinjo, etc etc). Jinjo ended up making the final cut to compete I think.

I had tickets for Saturday and Sunday to come back and watch the whole event. It was all planned and I couldn't have been more excited. I even got a great spot during the Popping battles.

But I have no idea who won.

I didn't stay.

I hope Sean won't mind someone else stealing his line, but:

"I had to go see about a girl."

And before any of you ask, the answer is yes. She was (and still is) totally worth it.

Collision - 55 seconds - SCAD senior film (2013)

This was my 1st senior film at SCAD. I did it in Flash CS5 in 10 weeks. I had help with sound, storyboards and backgrounds (artists in credits). I wanted to do something effects heavy. All animation and color was done by me.

FLCL Whiteboard Showdown (2017)

This one was fun. When I was teaching English at the Hyundai KIA R&D Center the engineers there often had to cancel class for business trips and last minute meetings. I would usually have an extra 20-30 minutes here and there. One day I brought my Groundwork book to do some sketches if I had time but ended up doing this on the whiteboard in the conference room.

Naruto collage #2 (2010)

This was my 2nd Naruto collage. When I moved to Korea I only took 2 or 3 art books with me. One of them was The Art of Naruto by Masashi Kishimoto. All images are hand drawn reproductions from that book.

My 1990's sets making a comeback

I helped my parents clear out the old storage unit and found these blasts from the past. The monorail was literally sealed in bags with packaging peanuts! 12 year old me knew it was something to protect : ) little sad I couldn't find the other two white wings for the Deep Freeze Defender.

Sakuga starter kit

When I lived in Korea my friend and I used to go to Seoul and comb through the bookstores looking for these. There's something about seeing the frames on paper in these books. Like touching history. I still get goosebumps when I flip through them.

Mugen, Jin and Fuu (2006)

These were early in my reproduction days. I had bought the DVDs as they came out and this was when I started to pause parts that I thought captured the characters well. Each of them is a hand drawn reproduction of screenshots from the show.

Ed vs Greed - hand drawn reproduction of 9th DVD cover

Oh this fight from the first series will forever live rent free in my head. To this day it's one of only 3 scenes that have literally made my body move involuntarily in response to the physics and impact in the animation - specifically when Ed drops into that spin kick that clocks Greed in the jaw - my whole upper body moved with the motion. I made this for a friend who I introduced the series to. It was a lot of fun to draw, so much energy packed into one frame.

This is a reproduction of the image on the 9th DVD cover. Pencil on drawing paper 18 x 24 inches

3D Illusionary perspective beer pong table (2007)

One of my first paid art commissions. In college, my friends paid me $100 plus materials to paint their beer pong table. I'd never attempted forced perspective before and was very worried I was going to ruin it. After a week of painting in their garage (and taking breaks for Mario Kart 64), this was the result.

Thank you Steve, Mike, Eric and Josh! Those were some good times down on the farm.

When I finally swung the bat - (2007) FLCL Collage

I can't keep saying over and over how much this show meant and still means to me with every post, but I've been holding this one back for a bit. Cowboy Bebop showed me the potential that Anime had, but FLCL is how I still picture everything in my head when I think about making animation - not to mention the beautiful adolescent love story that's woven through the whole chaotic mess. The design, the music, the writing. It doesn't get much better than FLCL. The first groundworks book I bought was for this show and flipping through the pages of animation and illustrations for the first time felt like I was holding the Holy Grail. I had just starting working on large, clean pieces of paper instead of lined paper and what started as a few random drawings became this collage. These are all hand drawn reproductions, I used screenshots, manga panels and official artwork from the FLCL Groundworks book. This was the official jump off point for me back in the day.

Where the Sword Sleeps - a classroom installation based on official Nintendo Breath of the Wild artwork

This was my first big project when I first got into my classroom 2 years ago. I don't have any windows in there and I wanted something that screamed 'outdoors'. This image came to mind immediately from the 2018 Happy Birthday official Nintendo artwork. I teach middle school and I also wanted to add a little wow factor for the students. I made it an installation and painted the canvases when they were on the wall to try and get a forced perspective and make the sword pop a little. I also used 2 different horizon lines to make that first stone at the bottom almost look like you could step on it. Thick globs of watercolor paint with a small amount of water gave it that textured look. Probably took about 40-50 hours and I loved every minute of it.

When Bahi JD emailed me back (2013)

This still stands out to me as one of those 'You really don't know what's possible until you try' type lessons. He was already making waves in the industry by then but I guess he had time to respond to a struggling animator. I was very close to printing it out and framing it. Really cool that someone so incredibly talented still took the time to get back to me. And he remains to this day, a big inspiration for me.
