I don't understand why people say Buenos Aires is unsafe as someone from the United States

As an American from Minneapolis, Buenos Aires felt much safer than my city. Granted I only was in CABA, but I felt extremely safe on the buses and the SUBTE, something I cannot say for my city's public transport. Everyone in the city was dressed very well and acted very civilized, there was almost no open drug use, and I encountered few homeless people, beggars, or vagrants.

YSK: If you are in a foreign country, the car you're riding in may not have airbags.

Why YSK:

Airbags have been required in the US since the 1980s, with side airbags required by the 2000s. However many developing countries don't have these requirements or only recently implemented them.

Cars in developing countries may also have fewer airbags than the cars you're used to. For example, many basic cars may only have one or two airbags instead of the 6 that most modern cars have in the US. Even for the same model, automakers will include fewer safety features. This is in an effort to save cost and due to lower disposable income in developing countries.

Furthermore other features that are standard on cars sold in the US or Europe may not be found on a lot of cars elsewhere like ABS, ESC, a Backup camera, or collision avoidance technology.

In fact, in some countries, cars that were structurally designed in the 1990s are still being made and sold new, the Nissan Tsuru in Mexico for example.

Best way to move from dentistry to finance?

I know this sub may think otherwise but I am horrible at dentistry and likely won't be a successful one. I'll also be 31 when I graduate next year and $800k in debt but I'm still willing to make the switch just cause my hands skills are horrible and I was a horrible dental student (took 6 years to graduate and had to appeal a dismissal to the dean to get reinstated).

I am at this point willing to go back to get my bachelor's in finance and start my undergrad all over back at square 1.

Are Superzoom cameras a good budget conscious way to get really high focal lengths?

An 800 mm telephoto lens may cost over $2000 but a 40x (20-800mm) bridge camera from 15 years ago can be had for $50.

I know that the sensor size on many bridge cameras are extremely small but I was thinking that for wildlife photography in daylight it will suffice and I wouldnt have a need to spend so much on a telephoto lens for my full frame camera with a focal length I rarely shoot at.

Do you consider "Negritos"/Anadanamese people Asian?

These people occupy a unique place in that while phenotypically they look African, genetically they are much closer to East, South, and Southeast Asians than to Africans and Europeans.

It is believed that these are the original ancestral people East Asians evolved from 50,000 years ago. In fact they were the first peoples to settle much of India and Southeast Asia before being absorbed by more oriental looking people. Many Southeast Asians and Southern Indians may even have some of their DNA.

Ushuaia or El Chalten+El Calafate in August

I have about 5 days to spare in Patagonia next month and am deciding which of these two places to go.

I am drawn to Ushuaia for the milder weather and more out of this world scenery (reminds me of Iceland, Alaska, or Norway but for a fraction of the price). The tours/hikes also seem cheaper and easier and the destination seems more under rated. However many other travelers found the area less impressive and touristy.

However, it seems like El Calafate and El Chalten are the stars of Patagonia. The hikes are more impressive (and difficult) and the higher altitude means much colder weather. Also not sure how the winter weather will cooperate and if Fitz Roy could be even visible. As an American living in Colorado, the area also looks similar to what I have back at home whereas Ushuaia seems more exotic.

Is it redundant to have both the Tamron 24-70 G2 and and Nikon 24 mm f/2.8D on my D810?

I've heard prime lenses are sharper but it seems like for the majority of the photography I take, the 24-70 fits my needs. It also seems that the 24-70 mostly underperforms at 24mm and f/2.8 which is a setting I never shoot at.

Was thinking of trading in the 24mm f/2.8D lens since I can get close to what I originally paid for it and using it to upgrade lenses on my backup Sony A6000.

Is Toyota or Volkswagen more common in your country?

Toyota and Volkswagen are two of the largest automotive rivals and rank number 1 and 2 respectively in sales.

As an automotive sales nerd, I've compiled this map.

For reference Toyota also includes Daihatsu and Lexus.

Volkswagen also includes Skoda, Audi, and Porsche

In countries where there wasn't significant or official sales data (like many smaller Sub-Saharan African countries), I used street view and made an educated guess based on what cars I saw on the roads.

Russian sales were based on 2021 data and excludes the grey market imports from Europe and Japan.

Do apparel and clothes made in Jordan actually support the Jordanian people/economy

I try to support Arab countries as much as possible in products I buy and I've been buying a lot of Jordanian made apparel recently from major brands.

However after doing research it seems like most of the clothing is actually made by South Asian laborers and the textile companies are owned by Chinese or Korean firms. Even worse, some of the raw materials come from Israel.

Anyone working 7 on 7 off or per diem pursue further education?

I'm partly attracted to these roles since I've always wanted to study Economics or Business in University but it wasn't pragmatic. I also never got the full college experience. I was thinking a flexible job like 7 on 7 off will allow me to simultaneously enroll in 6 credits at a local university, deduct tuition from taxes, defer student loan repayments, and maybe even join a frat or experience the college life I never got to live. I can also likely get cheaper health insurance through the college.

Currency conversion to Argentinian Pesos is significantly off

It seems like Mastercard uses an exchange rate that is 4% higher than the actual exchange rate on xe. Using my Amex Platinum card I get the rate very close to the original rate.

It seems to only be Argentinian Pesos as other currencies don't have this problem.

Is income no longer predictive of political affiliation?

Based on exit polls from the 2024 election, the most democratic income group was the bottom quintile followed by the top quintile, the 2nd quintile, the middle quintile, with the most Republican leaning group being the 4th quintile.

Traditionally the higher one's income the more Republican they are but now there seems to be no correlation. This is also seen in the wealthiest counties in the country, which have shifted from deep red to light blue.

However no group was extremely polarized towards one party with the most democratic group being D+8 and the most Republican group being R+6.

It seems like voters are much more divided by other factors like education level, race, religiosity, and gender than income. Why has income, which has one of the biggest influences on an individual's quality of life, stopped deciding whether someone is Democrat or Republican?

Landlord has been charging me my old rent for nearly a year. Should I keep quiet?

About a year ago I agreed to a 7% rent increase which is about $100/month. However I've been charged my old rent since and I never spoke up.

This is a large apartment management company whose switched ownership so I'm thinking they never got the communication from the previous company about my rent increase.

Can you set up a fake business to put on your application?

I was thinking anyone can be a turo host and you can rent out 2 or 3 cars on the platform but say you manage a fleet of 50. Or one can apply for an llc claiming they provide interior design work but not actually have any clients.

It's not like the schools will ask for tax records or bank statements.

As someone who was dismissed from medical school, medical school itself is a lot harder than just getting in.

Most people say getting in is the hard part, but my experiences differ.

I was able to tailor my application throughout undergrad through certain strategies that got me into several DO schools. However once medical school came along, I just couldn't keep up.

For example, I was able to achieve a 3.8 GPA in undergrad by taking really light course schedules (sometimes I would take only 6 credits a semester) as well as taking a lot of easy classes to make up for harder ones and inflate my gpa. In addition, for one of the hardest classes, Biochem, my school offers 2 different courses. One course is more medicine oriented while the other is intended for animal science majors. They both had very similar names and met the biochem requirement but I took the animal science one which was a lot easier than the medicine one.

Furthermore for the MCAT, I was able to completely drop everything and focus exclusively on the MCAT for over 1 year, as well as take it 3 times to achieve a 512 score while having access to extensive tutors. I was able to pad up my research since I had relatives working in lab research and just completed projects for them.

However medical school itself was a beast that you can't "cheat" your way through and my strategy in undergrad of taking lighter course loads no longer worked. You can't just take a reduced course load in medical school or during M3 year to help you pass. In fact legally the school can only give you 6 years to complete the program. Furthermore, you don't have the luxury of taking over a year to study for step 1 and step 2 while also not on rotations.
