No option for choosing online study material

I recently applied for an ODL masters course. But I could not find any option for choosing online vs physical study materials. I have already paid the 1st semester fees. Can I change it now?

Recommendation for ventilated shorts (male)

I need something with very good ventilation, ideally with mesh type fabric. Not too short.

Ideally, without inbuilt briefs. I don't like inbuilt briefs as I prefer my own dryfit boxers. If the shorts has inbuilt briefs, I'll just cut it off.

IGNOU ofline sessions

For many of the programs run by IGNOU, KIIT is the local campus for periodic offline consultations and submitting assignments and exams etc.

Does anyone know who at KIIT is responsible for IGNOU related activities?

Submitting masters degree instead of bachelors for admission to (2nd) masters program

I already have a master from a regular university. I want to apply for a 2nd masters in a different subject from IGNOU.

Somehow I don't have a soft copy of my BSc certificate or transcripts. They're in my native home and there's no one there right now who can scan and send it to me.

I do have the papers of my masters degree and 10+2.

So in the application form, where it says graduation certificate and marksheet, can I submit the ones from my masters instead of bachelors?

Gilbert Strang or Sheldon Axler

I had studied some linear algebra (maybe 2-3 semesters) in engineering college about a decade ago. I'm now starting to get back into math, with the goal of studying/understanding ML theory/research.

The standard advice is to start with Gilbert Strang (linear algebra and its applications) and then, optionally, do the Axler book. While reading Strang, i find it to be a cleaner and deeper exposition of topics i already vaguely remember. Axler, i find more novel and interesting, and kinda fresh.

Can I read them both in parallel? Is that too inefficient? Can you please suggest a good path based on my background and interests.

Center hole diameter for 12888 mechanism

I want to fit a 12888 clock mechanism behind a glass panel with the hands in front of the glass (dial).

I know how to choose the shaft length based on the thickness of the dial.

How large a hole should I drill in the centre of the dial for the shaft to pass through?

Why do so many police personnel like dogs

I've often noticed that compared to the general public, a far higher percentage of police folks like dogs.

Any ideas on why this could be the case?

Thickness of gold (wall clock) hands

I'm thinking of going to the local goldsmith and making wall clock hands from 18 (?) carat gold. I have a Young Town 12888 clock mechanism. The current hands are golden coated/plated/painted aluminum.

The goldsmith says he'll be able to copy the current hands. I don't know if the gold hands need to be of the same thickness as the aluminium hands, or more or less. I suspect if it's thicker, it'll jam. Does anyone know like how many (tenths of a millimetre) the hands are? My ruler isn't obviously able to measure it accurately. I also need to budget for the weight of gold, to estimate which I need an approximate volume.

I'm brand new to horology, so please dumb down your explanations.

Wobble board height

I'm getting a DIY wobble board made with the help of a carpenter friend. We got a 1.25" thick 20" wide hardwood board. So we'll have a circular board about 20" diameter.

For the hemisphere at the bottom, what should be the height of it? At this moment, we have something that's about 5" tall.

So 5" tall hemisphere plus 1.25" thick board, that's over 6" total height from the floor.

Will the 6" height be too tall for someone new to these boards? Does it increase the risk of injury? Will I grow into it?

The goal is to work on strengthening for running on unstable surfaces like soft sand, and for improving proprioception for other balance based sports like rock climbing, surfing, etc.

Garmin suggested workouts vs Coach (Amy, Greg, etc.) plans

3 months back my 5k time was 22.5 mins. In the meantime, I've been traveling a lot and lost a good bit of fitness. My current predicted 5k time is 24.5 mins. I want to do my first 10k later this year, hopefully in around 45 mins on a flat course.

Previously I've always used Garmin daily suggested workouts (DSW) on my Instinct 2X and liked it.

For my 10k prep, i thought to try out one of the virtual coaches available on Garmin (coach Amy in particular). I don't like that the workouts are not at all tailored. It just says easy run, best effort, etc. Nothing about HR zones or pace. I'm not sure I like it much. I'm also not sure it takes into account my previous runs (before I started the plan). For example, i previously had 15 min long tempo sessions. With the coaching plan, it only suggests a 1 km tempo run.

What do you think I should do -

  1. Go back to the DSWs.

  2. Continue with coach Amy.

I think the only thing DSWs miss is negative splits and hill sprints. How important are these? Or can I just do them separately?

On the other hand, I don't think coach Amy even has vo2max sessions, which, ironically, i like, despite nearly dying in the last interval, and sometimes not having the guts to do the very last rep.

Are there any other options that take into account HR, pace, etc., and offer something more customised/tailored to the individual runner?

Academic references for applicant from distance learning masters program

I've been out of school for well over a decade. Thinking of going back to university to do research. To get used to school, and to strengthen my application, I'm thinking of doing an online masters from a well-known distance learning university.

What can I do about getting academic references in such a situation?

Academic references for PhD

Thinking of doing a masters from IGNOU as background for a PhD. Problem is I finished my bachelor's long back and cannot give relevant academic references from that time.

While doing my masters in IGNOU, can I request any of the faculty to give me references for a PhD program in either India or abroad?

English language book(s) about Chinese revolutions, the period from 1950s to 2000s

I've recently been reading about the French and American revolutions, the Japanese Meiji restoration, the English Glorious revolution, Oliver Cromwell, the Magna Carta, etc. The sequence of events, the underlying causes, the various groups involved and their motivations, the sociology and politics, economic and social conditions that led to the revolution, its aftermath, etc. My interest is in the social, economic and political aspects.

I don't know of a good book for the recent Chinese revolutions and political/social movements, in particular the events from 1950s till early 2000s. So I'm not just interested in the Chiang Kai Shek era, but also things like the four modernizations, cultural revolutions, the rise, fall and subsequent rise of Deng Xiaoping, transformation from farmers making steel to modern manufacturing, etc.

Appreciate any recommendations.

Is iteration considered a valid and rigorous proof method?

When I read the Book of Proof by Hammand, it had a nice list of various types of techniques that can be used to prove/disprove various statements. Iteration or recursion was not part of that list.

I'm now starting with the book on Linear Algebra by Sheldon Axler and in many places he uses a multi step iterative process (NOT induction) to prove things like

Ref: Linear Algebra Done Right by Sheldon Axler, 3rd Ed, sections 2.23 and 2.26)

I wonder if there is a non-iterative method of proving such things. Is proof by iteration considered mathematically rigorous?

Do TRAI regulations on promotional SMS apply to WhatsApp?

Recently, I've started receiving lots of spam ads on WhatsApp.

I was able to mostly address the problem of promo SMSs with the TRAI list. Is there something similar for WhatsApp and digital communications?
