Balalaika (Black Lagoon)

I love her outfit and the way she wears her jacket over her shoulders is just super cool, and she just has a powerful aura that shows you don't want to mess with her. Also: scars. Scars are awesome.

Which character(s) do you keep in your party at all times?

My boy Sabin never leaves, especially by endgame since he's so OP he could probably solo Kefka.

Finished Suikoden 2, it's all all-timer for me.

I never played the original on PS1 but after finishing the remaster I can easily say S2 is one of the GOATs. It's an improvement from the first game in pretty much every way while also retaining what made it great. The sprite work is gorgeous, the battle system is simple but fun and the story has one of the greatest antagonists in any game ever.

The remaster also comes with some nice QoL features like difficulty modes (though the game is still pretty easy even on Hard) and the ability to speed up battles. Only real downside I would say is I'm still not a fan of the army battles (after awhile I just let Apple handle everything) but that might just be a me thing.

How do you feel about bosses that require multiple parties to fight?

I personally love it, it's so much fun having to use all my characters and figure out how they best compliment each others. Some of my favourite examples are:

Bizarro Sephiroth in FFVII: you have to switch between multiple parties to strategically take out his different body parts

Galdera in Octopath Traveler: you divide your team into two parties for the two phases of the boss. Vide in OT 2 takes this even further by letting you use all 8 characters at once for Phase 2

Luca Blight in Suikoden 2: you have to beat him three times with three different parties and then a duel to finish him off for good.

Any excitement here for the Suikoden 2 anime?

I feel like almost nobody is talking about this even though it recently got a trailer and is coming out in October of this year. I hope it turns out well and potentially leads to us getting more Suikoden remasters in the future. Makes me also think about other JRPGs that I'd love to see get animes, I feel like Chrono Trigger and Lunar would be great ones to adapt.

You're his lawyer, what is your defense?

I'm shifting the blame towards the Empire and saying that the Magitek experiments are what drove him insane and therefore he's not culpable for his actions.

What would you say are the most unique/experimental JRPGs you've played?

There's a few that come to mind for me:

  1. Live a Live: a game that's told from the perspective of multiple protagonists across different eras, basically a predecessor to games like Octopath Traveler

  2. The Saga games as a whole are pretty unique, but RS2 is especially interesting in that you're playing as an entire empire in a story that spans generations to take down the Seven Heroes

  3. Chrono Trigger's implementation of time travel is probably the greatest in any game ever, I can't think of one that even comes close.

  4. Suikoden's base building elements where you watch your castle grow as you recruit more people is great. Obviously it's been surpassed in depth by other games since then but it's still a standout in the genre.
