I'm not saying I'm some genius songwriter or metal producer but here's a few under discussed topics that I wish someone competent told me a long time ago

  1. If your takes aren't convincing immediately then your song will suffer and can't be salvaged, unfortunately. This is super obvious with vox but really applies to every instrument. It's fucking metal. You need to be energized during recording or else you can't possibly expect the product to sound convincing to the listener. You could try a number of things. Listen to your favorite album before the recording, run around the block 2 or 3 times, watch your favorite sports team championship highlights, smoke a small amount of weed, etc

  2. Energy translates more so than the perfect "____ tone." Fuck chasing the perfect guitar, bass, snare, kick tone. I've mixed bands recording into the shittiest setup with Energy and it sounded better than some pristine boring stuff. Once again. It's metal. Have some attitude

  3. Notice how all of your favorite albums most likely have appropriate sonic contrasts? If the vocals are extreme then the music matches that, right? If the vox are a little more subdued try and make the music around that feel closer to the vocal energy. Havig too much ofba mismatch with this feels disconnected and gives the listener a reason to turn it off. You can still be punchy and heavy without maxing out everything. If you're mixing a band who has more laid back vox try this.

  4. Transition automation - Holy fuck I swear to God nobody talked about this for years. Give the listeners no reason to turn off the song. Make the transitions built energy and release. This is done usually through dynamics, automation, random sampling with fx automated, etc. You need it to feel like the song has motion instead of a flat and boring movement between the verse/chorus.

  5. Change the second verse to something different, instrumentally. We as a society have shorter attention spans. Once again don't let the listener have a reason to turn it off. If you just repeat the first verse then we feel like we aren't moving forward with the song. It rejuvenates the song to have more energy in the second verse. This is my personal fav tidbit that helped me

To the person who suggested The Wanderer Along album "Portrait of Me:" I have questions....

First and foremost, are you okay? What sort of sick, deprived, isolated existence are you living in to consume that album a top recommendation???

Tbh, it struck me as completely bizarre for the first few tracks. Then it started to make sense. It's like this strange faux yearning attempt at creating nostalgic motion and atmosphere. I then started to strangely like it.. ive personally been on a journey creating abstract nostalgic music in my own attempted style.

Honestly thank you for that recommendation. I'm from Oklahoma so maybe that made a difference?

Triplecheese by U-he. This sounds like those big chords in the credits of lifetime movies or made for tv dramas. Like the ones with true stories and overly dramatic melancholy for closure.

Livestreamed audio is significantly different than what is being monitored real time in the livestream mixing room.

What sort of industry secrets about broadcast audio should I know?

I've been mixing FOH at multiple venues between 200-4k capacity for years but really have never done much livestream audio until now.

Our livestream room utilizes Allen and Heath sq5 for the stream. I'm using the USB function to go through a DAW so I can use plugins and other fx I can't with the sq5.

The quality sounds great in the room live. Both in my monitors (kali audio in8) and headphones (Beyerdynamic dt900)

Once uploaded to YT and FB the signal sounds degredaded. The best way I can describe it is confined, squashed in a manner that sounds different than an overcooked compressor, and just generally way fucking different and it pisses me off because the stream room quality sounds damn good!

Is it the internets capability at my facility? We're uploading at 2000kbps but ours crashes if we try 5000

Completely random and generally unknown hidden gem progressive metal/adjacent albums I've found that I can't stop listening to.

Au4 - And Down Goes The Sky: This is a really neat sound design type album that reminds me of Devin Townsend. I'd be surprised if the person behind this creation wasn't a fan. It's kind of electronic, pop, ambient, downtempo, industrial. But with plenty of progressive elements.

SKEB - Not Important: Something like Frost* meets David Maxim Micic with a very swanky guitar playing style. Lots of emotion and chord modal shifts.

Clear Clover- Spectate: IMO, one of the only albums that touches on a very specific "existential nostalgia" metal kind of sound. It is somewhat like Ocean Machine but has its own flare and sound design. I can't get enough of this one several years later

Andy Huack - Westerly: Grunge style vox with super western sounding polyphia-esq guitars but IMO way more unique and listenable. Hella catchy vox and huge choruses. Feels like an impromptu road trip

Ryan Wall - Forgotten Oil Rigs: Deep ambience, unique vox, huge choruses, fun moments. The first 4 tracks are sooooo good.

I'll make a pt.2 post soon. But these have been my go-tos for a long time. I hope you enjoy!

Personals (1990) - TV Movie where a journalist is doing a writeup on loneliness in their city. Meanwhile, a psychotic lady is murdering men who cheat on their wives via the personals newspaper ads.

Being a Dev-stan makes me feel a strange dichotomy

I love every single album. And yet, this has resulted in me feeling both extremely open minded and narrow minded at the same time.

Am I just brainwashed somehow? Or am I part of a mentally controlled cult?

Idk man..I've listened to every album including bonus discs and b sides etc. I love damn near every fucking song of the entire discography. How someone can be this prolific is absurd. That's like 400 songs and i probably love 390 of them. This strangely makes me feel both open minded and narrow minded.

I recently watched "Safe" (1995). This movie is haunting me and feels like that psychological atmosphere we've come to expect from A24 only 20+years ahead of its time.

I'd he shocked if several A24 directors were not hugely influenced by this movie. It is deeply unsettling. Ive had jt lingering in my brain for far too long. I gotta say it's one of the greatest pieces of work I've ever seen. And yet VERY LITTLE happens on screen. It's this slow decline into something so terrifying. What's everyone's best guess as to what this is about?

I know I'm reaching off topic coming to this sub to discuss a non-A24 movie but it's really fucking with my brain for days. Lol. I assume a lot of you have seen this

Does anyone else consider Safe (1995) a horror movie? Because I feel traumatized

WARNING: This is a slow burn of a movie

I've been thinking about this movie for days after.

This movie has some REALLY ERIE moments. Makes you feel on edge the entire movie and has several moments that feel more like modern day A24 style trauma horror.

For those that have seen this did it leave a lasting impression? Idk maybe it's because of my age but it just hit right.

Why does nobody ever talk about Blackberry (2023)?

This movie is my favorite of all the "tech origin story" type movies. The acting is great, the characters are exceptional, and the score is PHENOMENAL.

Fuck....seriously one my favorite movies I've seen in a while. I'm probably just stanning but I feel nobody will discuss this one.

Most over the top ridiculous 90s made for tv movie on Tubi?

I want something with absurdly glossy and hazy atmosphere. Fever dream-esque and absurd. 1990-2002ish. Please suggest me some of the best tv movies that fit that description. Thanks
