Is it worth going to the dermatologist for a second opinion about a rash, or stick with the allergist? I wondered if they would be better at identifying the type of rash or not?

And whether it's a contact allergy vs medication allergy vs some kind of condition. I'm sure it would be beneficial, but my copay is 150, so I don't want to go unless it's likely to add info. I already have steroid cream and whatnot. Thanks!!!

Question about reactions to medications and supplements.

I.e., could an allergy to lanolin in d3 develop after 1-3 weeks (following prior prolonged use; I cut it out and added it back when the rash started to see if it could be a trigger) and then spawn a rash at random times? I’ve been eliminating things to see what’s wrong with me. I’ve had food/skin prick tests but am too rashy for patch testing right now. The rash keeps triggering in the same strange spots so it doesn’t look like a contact allergy tbh, and I take very little meds wise. Wool does make me itch though I know that doesn’t necessarily equate.

Does this look like KP? I have it on my arms, but now I'm getting similar bumpiness on my chest. If so, how do I treat KP alongside rosacea?

I have rosacea on my face, KP on my arms, and both (?) on my chest. I have a little bumpiness on my legs, but that's less of an issue; it's mostly my upper half.

I use azelaic on my face and chest, and it's helping with redness, though I get occasional bumps, but I've only just started using it twice a day. But can I also use urea or amlactin on my chest? Maybe switch to azelaic in the morning and urea at night, or alternate days?

I'm thinking urea would be gentler here; don't want to make my skin red and angry. It was a bit angrier post shower, so it's come down a good bit, but you can see there's a particular texture, and that seems to linger.

Fragrance free/hypoallergenic lipstick recommendations? I'm open to glosses and such but am more of a lipstick girl.

I'm wondering if I'm allergic to something in revlon? Anyhow, I need new recs! Drugstore is preferred, but at this point, I'm pretty open. I like cool-toned rose/mauve/berry shades.

(Yes, hypoallergenic is different for everyone, but until I have less rashes, I can't get patch tested, lol. So I'm stuck eliminating things.)

Is it possible to be allergic to your night guard (upper body rashes, etc.) without any local irritation on/around your mouth?

I've been having mysterious allergy symptoms since around the time I started. I do have some allergies and rosacea and other stuff going on (possibly mcas), but something has made my body go even more haywire. And I realize it lines up with around the time I started my night guard**. Is that a possible thing to flag? Is it worth asking my dentist if it contains acrylates, and if so, are there alternatives?**

I'm often waking up with rashes on my arms (and now asthma), and this rash doesn't really go away, but it "activates" or worsens at times. Increase in redness, flushing, itching, break outs, etc. on my chest, neck, shoulders. I use 100 percent cotton sheets, hypoallergenic pillows and bedding. I soak my night guard in white vinegar and use an ultrasonic cleaner, so it's not like I could be reacting to a chemical solution.

I switched from my gentle laundry detergent to an even gentler one, have cross referenced product ingredients like crazy, and it's not like there's a clear allergen. I've cut everything out one at a time, stuck with my old products, tried one new at a time. It calms/worsens in random waves. If it were truly contact derm, I'd be reacting on my legs by now. And there's no real consistency re. ingredients; it doesn't make sense that I could tolerate cocoglucoside in my shampoo and not my body wash, or on some parts of my body and not others. Plus we're talking about products like vanicream. So I feel like something is being missed. I was going to get patch tested but had to cancel due to having another skin reaction that includes my back, but I'm honestly not even sure it's safe for me right now given that it's affecting my breathing, etc. I would never use 99 percent of those chemicals anyway.

If you can DIY hair gel (like flax gel), can you DIY leave in/curl cream? Or add moisture into the gel?

I've heard you can add xanthan gum to the gel for hold (correct me if I'm wrong, lol); can I add a moisturizing element to this or make a separate mix? Or would you need lots of preservatives etc. to make that work?

I'm in the process of getting patch testing, but for now I seem to be allergic to a lot of things. Fragrances, def. Acrylates? Some random stuff. Etc. I don't think there are many gel options left. Thanks!!

▲ 5 r/OCD

I have this specific kind of OCD that involves ruminations and difficulty making decisions. Looking for advice.

I.e., I want to leave my field of work, but I will weigh the pros and cons endlessly until I have proof that it's not for me (you'd think 6 years would be enough)! I always find some small thing to counter my point (e.g., see this one person who's happy in your field; this is what you went to school for; what if I don't succeed when I pivot, etc.). But I've been so unhappy, and yet there's always something I can think of that I haven't tried.

But there's never enough for me to know something truly. So I wind up stuck for years. This can translate into reading messages over and over, though that's not the main thing I'm discussing here; but you get the idea.

I have no innate ability to trust my own judgment, which is admittedly good when I listen to it; I have a good head on my shoulders; I'm obviously not impulsive. It's like I want to make a logical, not emotional, decision. But there's never enough data. What has helped you with this kind of thing?

Does anyone know of providers in the Philly area (preferably in the city) who evaluate/treat MCAS (mast cell activation syndrome)?

Thank you!!!

Does this sound at all like MCAS or something autoimmune? Worth getting evaluated?

I'm using the world's gentlest products and have no idea what's triggering what. I'm getting patch tested, but there's nothing on the list that's even in my products, and it just all feels bizarre and extreme. I've cross referenced ingredients so much, and it isn't consistent; plus I'm reacting to things like vanicream soap that aren't even on the patch test list. Something more than just allergies is happening here, and I need some advice! Thank you!

I've been having the craziest allergic reactions (rashes from advil, bandaids, couch cushions, vanicream products changes in temp, and honestly, who knows what), significant upper body flushing (beyond where rosacea hits, like my face, chest, shoulders, arms, hands), full-body, long-term reactions to mold and new environments sometimes. Random patterns of extreme itchiness. A product will work on one part of my body but not another, or I'll be fine and then bam, react. This comes with asthma, sneezing, etc. and just generally feeing unwell. Other health issues; not sure what's connected: reflux/GI issues, rapid pulse, insomnia, headaches, brain fog/dizziness, hormonal issues, chronic muscle pain, IC, among other things. I have these crazy uptick every time I shower and sometimes an evening flare as well. Burning/hot skin and heat intolerance.

I'm sorry if I'm off base here, but my doctors aren't seeing the full picture, and I'm looking for answers and whether I should consult a specialist on my own.

30F, general bloodwork is fine. I'm currently off my pepcid/zyrtec due to upcoming patch test, and I'm a bit miserable. It wasn't feeling great with them, but it had helped to take the edge off.

What specific ingredients do you react to? What should I potentially look out for?

Suspected not confirmed acrylate allergy here.

I've never used gel polish but am wondering about my regular ILNP polishes (hopefully it's not that). But as I've been tracking allergens, I removed my nail polish for a bit. I've been getting irritation and breakouts on my chest again all of a sudden (whereas my rosacea was mostly just redness), and just realized I had painted my nails again about a week ago. My hands/nails look fine though. Not sure if that's a possibility but figured I'd ask due to a lot of weird patterns.

I'm waiting on my patch test, which I think tests for ethyl acrylate? but nothing else acrylate wise unless there's an ingredient I'm unfamiliar with. Would that tell me what to look out for in hair products and regular nail polish if I do have an acrylate allergy, or? What specific ingredients do you avoid?

It's so confusing because I have rosacea (face and chest and sometimes upper body??) and possibly kerotosis pilaris on my hands (derm will confirm) and dry/oily skin that tends to react. I think some stuff is falling between the cracks of derm vs allergist, and they haven't really asked about my routine.

Is 16 ferratin (30F) low enough to cause symptoms?

I know it's a point into the normal range, but I've been having symptoms. I get these weird spells where I'm really dizzy/lightheaded and tired for a few days, more prone toward eye strain, and then I'm kind of back to baseline with some symptoms but less. I've been calling it "adult sick" but I'd like to know what it is, lol. I do have a rapid pulse and a lot of general aches. Among other things. Doc just said to watch it, but I can't keep paying for visits, lol. I'm just so so tired today.

I'm a vegetarian, and I do have heavy periods that often come twice a month, so I figure my iron will be low by next year anyway; it has been trending down. Rest of my bloodwork was normal, and no major health concerns. Is it safe to just take a low dose supplement and see if I feel better? What would you recommend starting with? I heard iron bisglycinate is getler on the stomach (I have ibs). Thanks!

Birefringence or hi-fi? Looking for an easy to remove/apply purple for summer.

Edit: doesn't have to be super purple; I just appreciate the purple tones. Easy formula is the big thing for me. They're both so beautiful. <3

I struggle with certain formulas, though. I found tidal wave too thick for me personally? and I prefer a smoother finish. But echo, sugar cube, flower child, etc. have been perfect. I don't know if these would be hard to level, as I have unsteady hand. I also use FF nail polish remover which takes some work, so I'd rather not get something that'll stain too much! Thanks!!

Remix is also very cool but might be closer to flower child/sugar cube, though I love the cracked glass look. But I should buy one, haha.

Folliculitis, KP, or a rash?

Edit to add: Dry/bumpy but only slight itch. They're raised, but don't feel swollen/irritated. But didn't seem to like an occlusive cream.

I thought I had developed a million contact allergies overnight, but I'm starting to think it's a skin condition because it flares randomly and keeps popping up in the same spots even when I haven't changed anything. I was starting to think KP because my skin is quite dry (and the sandpaper feel is classic), but because it got more inflamed with an occlusive cream and is a bit more red/raised, could it be folliculitis?? Seems to come and go.

That would explain why I keep making it worse, as I treat everything like eczema.

I also happen to have rosacea on my face (just flushing, only react to products and heat) and possibly my chest (redness, occasional bumps, unless that's follicular too).

If it is folliculitis, what's the best sensitive skin treatment? I've heard SA and BP; I do have the cerave 4% BP wash (which I tolerate on my face). Maybe I could try that to stop, then up the percentage if it isn't enough?

Does this look like keratosis pilaris by any chance? It does feel dry, but the itch is pretty slight.

I keep getting these tiny little bumps, mostly skin colored, but some red, especially on the back of my arms - occasionally, I’ll get a little bit bumpiness on my hands or upper hips. Always the same spots. I just don’t know if I should be using urea or using an eczema/rash treatment. I am getting allergy test tested, but I have to wait a few weeks. Zoomed in here, but they’re pretty small though easier to see in the yellow light. It seems to come and go out of nowhere when I haven’t changed anything.

It’s confusing because I’m also prone towards contact dermatitis (more of a raised reaction, more burning and itchy), and I’ve been wondering for a while if I have MCAS or an autoimmune thing due to the severity of my reactions (significant flushing and widespread rosacea, rashes).

But I wonder if chronic contact derm (literally starting with a contact allergy to something on my balcony cushions, which took me months to release, but I have reacted to several things since) compromised my skin barrier and caused KP?

u/Any-Use6981 — 17 days ago

Do you get rashes from acrylates in regular nail polish and in hair/body products?

I don't have a confirmed allergy yet (waiting on patch testing in a few weeks) and am not certain if what's happening to me is an autoimmune thing or contact derm, but I've already eliminated fragrances, essential oils, and botanicals ages ago, as well as most common allergens and various coconut derivatives (like cocogluco). But I keep getting rashes from everything. I've literally cross referenced and researched all my products and all the products out there, lol. But this is one on my list because it's hidden in everything like my hair gel and nail polish. But I seem to be allergic to nearly all vanicream products; can hardly use hair products at this point, and now I can't find a soap that works . . .

Did any of you experience this? Could acrylates be possible, or maybe MCAS or some kind of autoimmune thing? Losing my mind over here, lol, and need soap. Thanks!

What starter retinol would you recommend for me? I was thinking about cerave resurfacing, acne free adapelene (or differin), La Roche posay, something prescription strength, or? I have very sensitive skin and some hormonal breakouts and scars; I wouldn't mind anti-aging or general skin benefits too.

I am currently starting with azelaic, and that's helping! Will wait a bit to start a new active. Now I need a *gentler* retinol (or retinoid??)

Re my skin: I break out on my chin a couple times a month at most, but usually 1-2 at a time that are larger and harder to treat/avoid scarring. It's combo (maybe more oily) but sensitive, though weirdly I can tolerate acids just fine (benozyl peroxide). Should add I have type 1 rosacea (just flushing).

I do have post acne marks and scars which I know cerave is good for, and I've had a good experience with the brand as a whole despite various sensitivities. I want to improve those a bit (to the extent that retinol does, alongside clearing up breakouts.

But I would like something that generally improves the quality of my skin, fine lines, etc. I don't want to jump for tret (too harsh), but what should I start with given all this?
