I've been trying to read more about Pakistan (am Indian) and found Multan very interesting. It seems to be a super historical city in a geographically and culturally unique part of Punjab. Additionally I recently read the book Pakistan: A Hard Country by Anatol Lieven and found the description of Multan quite interesting, and some relatives of mine supposedly lived there pre partition.
I have nearly 900 but I'm still unable to add genres to releases without others voting. No weighting restrictions on my account either.
Yesterday I was at the airport waiting for my plane while listening to So High, when a Punjabi Sikh man sat across from me.
I wanted to show him I am not racist and that I support his community, but not in an obvious way. So I opened the Spotify app, turned my brightness to max, and laid it on my chair’s arm. I don’t think he noticed though.
I did this once before in my college class where a Punjabi student sat next to me. I decided to play some Sidhu Moose Wala through my AirPods and had my phone facing him and gave him a short nod.
I like to think I’m on the right side of history and that I will make their day.
Anyone else do this?
is it because nepal is smaller and so it's easier to sustain a nationally known 'scene'? or is it because metal in india has filled the same niche? bc there haave been punk bands in nepal since the 90s but it seems like punk in india is still very little compared to metal
It's a random thing that came to mind but I was listening to qawwali and was wondering if anyone has tried to make hip hop based on qawwali samples. I feel like a lot of the hedonism that is common in hip hop goes against the ideas of spirituality but at its core hip hop isn't a hedonistic genre and it's not like samples = theme (like Yung Lean's song Ginseng Strip samples a Kannada devotional song but it's super hedonistic). Idk this idea just came into my head, it probably sounds super crappy if it exists but I was morbidly curious still
With his new dark aesthetic and trollish demeanour repesenting the sigmas who are phonk listeners, and he is 'experimental rap' because he's experimenting with bringing phonk to the hip hop mainstream? It would be a massive step forward for the whole dark troll face/rage phonk aesthetic and could have a lot of aura IMO for an album.
I don't like the term 'world music' but regardless, I was wondering if there are any vinyl shops in Oxford that cater to cratedigging enthusiasts looking for non-Anglosphere music.
Amazing album. Collection of Punjabi and Sindhi Sufi qawwalis and songs.
Is this present in rituals in other part of India or a uniquely South Indian thing? And do we have any anthropological work discussing its possible links to a common ancestry?
