One of the most glaring inconsistencies in House of the Dragon is its construction of Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower as mothers. The series depicts Rhaenyra as an exceptionally attentive, incredibly loving, and emotionally intelligent parent, while Alicent is presented as a mother whose anxieties, repression, and rigidity have damaged her children. While parenthood is inherently complex - and children often differ wildly from their parents - this post-Episode 5 shift abandons the foundational characterization established in the first half of Season 1.

Rhaenyra

Simply put: Rhaenyra should not be the healthier parent of the two.

That doesn't mean Rhaenyra should be an abusive mother or a woman incapable of loving her children (S2 Alicent, I'm looking at you); she should be affectionate with them, protective of them, interested in their lives, and capable of care. However, none of those qualities erase the traits with which the series introduced her. Rhaenyra is (or rather, was) rebellious, impulsive, entitled, self-centered, demanding, and accustomed to having the people around her accommodate her desires. Her capacity for love is undeniable, but it is matched by her tendency to "consume" those around her.

I'm currently working on a rewrite of House of the Dragon, and this monologue (given by Rhaenys) perfectly describes Rhaenyra as a person:

"You consume people, Rhaenyra. They come to you whole, and in your thrall, they are diminished. Aemma's memory. Alicent's devotion. Vaemond's tongue. My son. You pluck from this family flesh that feeds your false likeness, and leave the living to reckon with the wounds."

That is the Rhaenyra we were given in Episodes 1-5 of HotD S1. She is not a misunderstood girl who wants to be free, but a princess who frequently treats other people's lives as resources available for her use. She expects Viserys's love to shield her from consequences. She expects Criston's unwavering loyalty even after crossing professional boundaries. She expects Laenor's political protection while building a separate family with Harwin Strong. When Vaemond challenges her children's legitimacy, she does not rely on persuasion, but violence.

Ultimately, Rhaenyra Targaryen is NOT the kind of person who should become a healthy parent simply because she has children. If anything, motherhood should expose a great contradiction in Rhaenyra: she loves her children but struggles to recognize them as separate entities from her own political project. She should defend them so aggressively that she fails to teach them accountability, inadvertently allowing their entitlement to fester. Plus, having Daemon as a father figure… that adds up to a big yikes!

Now, let's talk about Jacaerys Velaryon (Waters).

I like Jace. I think Jace is one of the stronger characters on Team Black, and I understand perfectly well why people love him. I cried at his death! However, I believe the fandom's tendency to point at Jace and say, "Look at how Rhaenyra raised such a gentleman!" exposes the issue. Jace should NOT be a gentleman (or at the very least, not in the uncomplicated sense) merely because Rhaenyra raised him. While he should be charming, intelligent, protective, and capable of controlling himself at court (much like Young Rhaenyra), beneath that polish, Jace should have inherited some of Rhaenyra's entitlement. He should believe that his family is entitled to what it claims. He should be courteous toward people he considers his equals while still having difficulty seeing the humanity of those "beneath him". Instead, the show frequently makes Jace the evidence that Rhaenyra's parenting worked - but why would it?

Rhaenyra's children grow up surrounded by an extraordinary amount of privilege, political protection, and institutional violence. Hell, Rhaenyra's youngest sons - Joffrey, Aegon III, and Viserys II - grow up with Daemon as a father! Jace, Luke, and Joffrey are told that they are legitimate despite everyone at court knowing otherwise. Their grandsire threatens mutilation against anyone who says otherwise. Vaemond Velaryon loses his life (and in Fire & Blood, the Silent Five lose their tongues) for challenging their legitimacy. Daemon, their latest father figure, murders him in front of the court, while their mother continues to insist that they are the rightful heirs. Their family expects other people to accept an enormous lie because acknowledging the truth would threaten them, and somehow, the boys emerge as almost entirely humble, emotionally healthy gentlemen.

While it's not impossible for Rhaenyra's children to be well-rounded people, it's certainly unconvincing. Jace, Luke, and Joffrey should have been products of their environment. They should be children who absorbed the values of their family. They should understand that people will die to preserve their position and not really care. They should understand that their mother's claim is not merely a philosophical question but the organizing principle of their lives. They should have an enormous sense of loyalty, but that loyalty should sometimes become an inability to recognize where their family's interests end and other people's rights begin.

Furthermore, TikTok loves to describe Rhaenyra and Laenor's relationship as a "healthy lavender marriage", and consequently describes Jace and Luke as having been raised in this wonderful environment with two loving fathers. There is certainly something touching about the affection between Rhaenyra, Laenor, Harwin, Jace, and Luke, but the fandom's tendency to romanticize the arrangement ignores how complicated and dysfunctional it actually is. Rhaenyra's children grow up knowing - or at minimum being surrounded by an environment in which they can eventually discover - that their legal father is not their biological father. Their mother is married to one man while carrying on a relationship with another and the children are growing up within a royal fishbowl where their family's survival hinges on a massive lie.

If Rhaenyra’s sons were truly products of their environment, they would display the ugly realities of aristocratic privilege.

- A Jace who can be charming and gracious at court but cruel to a servant would be more interesting than a Jace who is simply "the gentleman".
- A Luke who loves his mother but laughs when a servant is humiliated would allow us to infer about the environment in which he was raised.
- A Joffrey who is spoiled and reckless precisely because he is the youngest and most protected >!would make sense given his death!<.

If Rhaenyra's sons were going to inherit the worst aspects of her entitlement, then it would not be unreasonable for one of them to have a storyline involving sexual misconduct, either. Rhaenyra teaches her children that their claim must be defended, that they deserve what has been promised to them, and that the world is something they must force to accommodate them.

Alicent

Conversely, Alicent's family is treated by the writers and by the fandom as the total opposite: a toxic household where she is entirely to blame for her children's damage (and not the negligent father, but sure). This is where HotD gets Alicent Hightower especially wrong (besides selling out her sons, but I am choosing to ignore that for the sake of a discussion surrounding Season 1).

Alicent should have been a fantastic mother. Not because she is young and therefore incapable of mistakes, and not because she should somehow be perfect. Her youth matters in this, as she is still a teenager when she becomes queen, is maritally raped, and begins having children. Additionally, Alicent has been raised by a father who views her primarily as a political asset and is suddenly married to an older king who is emotionally unavailable and still grieving his first wife. Plus, she has children that are entangled in a succession crisis upon birth and is surrounded by people who constantly tell her what said children must become.

Of course Alicent will make mistakes - much like every parent - but those mistakes should come out of love for her children. If Alicent doesn't love her children, why is this war happening in the first place? But alas…

Alicent is introduced as kind, conscientious, dutiful, attentive, socially perceptive, emotionally intelligent, and concerned with other people's expectations. She has been conditioned to sacrifice herself for her family and for her friend(s). As a whole, Alicent is introduced as a courteous girl who believes that her value comes from fulfilling her obligations to others, which means motherhood should initially be the one place where Alicent refuses to repeat what was done to her. She should look at Aegon, Helaena, Aemond, and Daeron and think: "You will not become what my father made me." Instead, the show makes Alicent incapable of understanding her children.

Aemond

As a child, Aemond was mocked because he did not have a dragon, humiliated by his older brother and his nephews, and later, is attacked/permanently disabled by said nephews. There is no reason why he should consequently have "mommy issues", as his mother is the one adult in his life who responds fiercely when he is injured. Alicent was enraged on Aemond's behalf, demanded an eye for an eye, physically confronted the king and his daughter, and was willing to challenge the entire royal household because her child had been maimed. Aemond, therefore, should understand that his mother loves him. His problem shouldn't be that "Oh, Mother never loved me." An interesting route to take for Aemond could've been "Mother loved me so fiercely that I learned, from her actions, that what was done to me must be avenged by any means possible."

Alicent should've raised Aemond to understand that being bullied did not make him weak and that being maimed did not make him less than. She should've taught him that he was entitled to justice, but because she is frightened for him and their family and is locked into a cycle of consistent retaliation, Aemond finds that strength is the only protection he has available. His eventual ruthlessness should not stem from maternal neglect, but maternal overprotection combined with a culture of violence.

Helaena

If Helaena is to remain a neurodivergent Dragon Dreamer, then Alicent should recognize the signs that she is overstimulated before anyone else does. Alicent should understand that Helaena shouldn't be forced into conventional courtly behavior. She should know when Helaena is frightened, when she needs silence, or when she is trying to communicate something that cannot be articulated conventionally. Because Alicent is herself a woman that's spent her life being forced to perform a role, she should understand - more than anyone else - why Helaena would be uncomfortable with the role imposed upon her. Their relationship could've been beautiful! I'm mad now, but let's keep going.

Aegon

Aegon is, perhaps, the biggest issue I have with House of the Dragon's writing choices regarding Alicent's parenting. The show's Aegon feels like a collection of all the reasons someone deserves to lose. Aegon did not need to be a rapist to be a broken man; the choice to make him one irreparably damaged his character, transforming a potentially rich exploration of duty and self-destruction into a shallow caricature of villainy. Instead of being driven by cruelty and excess, Aegon's central flaw should stem from an ingrained, almost suffocating love for his family. His core complex should be rooted in the realization that his very existence is a political catalyst, leading him to the conclusion that he must become a king he never wanted to be to ensure his loved ones survive the coming war. This internal martyrdom offers a far more devastating and narratively fulfilling crux than mere depravity, as Aegon's weight of expectation should originate from the pressure exerted onto him by Otto Hightower. Otto serves as the architect of Aegon's deepest anxieties, weaponizing the boy's natural affection for his siblings and mother by constantly whispering that failure to ascend the throne means their inevitable execution (he's not wrong, but could have gone about it in a much better manner). This dynamic would end up breeding an inferiority complex within Aegon; he feels he is never enough for the realm, but feels he must carry it anyway.

Conversely, Alicent should stand in stark contrast to her father, serving as Aegon's emotional anchor and the sole reason he retains his innate goodness. The bond between a mother and her firstborn often serves as the emotional bedrock of a child's development. Alicent, recognizing the burdens placed upon her son, would pour her empathy and protective instincts into shielding his spirit and validating his fears while trying to preserve his humanity. Her unconditional love creates a heartbreaking dichotomy: Aegon is, fundamentally, a good young man (nurtured by an exceptional mother) who is nevertheless being slowly crushed by the machinations of his grandsire and the inescapable gravity of his royal name. Writing Aegon from this lens changes him from a reviled antagonist into a, gasp, real human being - one who sacrifices his own happiness on the altar of familial duty.

When structuring each of these character arcs, the tension lies not in a protagonist's evil actions, but in the slow erosion of a good person forced into an impossible mold (like what HotD has done with Rhaenyra in Season 3, which I enjoy). Aegon should've been the embodiment of Alicent's insecurity and sense of duty, Helaena her sensitivity, Aemond her sense of duty made militaristic, and Daeron her courtesy/conscientiousness. Instead, HotD fashions them into four separate explanations for why Alicent failed as a mother and why she deserves the abuse she suffers throughout the Dance of the Dragons.

Rhaenyra's children should believe they deserve, while Alicent's children should believe they owe.

Rhaenyra's children should've had difficulty recognizing limits, while Alicent's children should've had difficulty setting their own.

Conclusion

There you go! Problem fixed. Every child of the Dance becomes a product of his or her family, which is far more compelling than dividing the children into "Rhaenyra's good kids" and "Alicent's bad kids".

The Rhaenyra of Season 1 shouldn't have naturally become an emotionally enlightened mother out of nowhere, she should remain Rhaenyra. Her love should be real, but so should her selfishness. Her protectiveness should be real, but so should her entitlement.

Likewise, Alicent should not become a terrible mother simply because the writers need her to. Alicent's defining characteristic is that she cares. She cares too much about duty, too much about appearances, too much about consequences, too much about what other people expect. She should be the kind of mother who writes Daeron letters because she cannot bear that her son is growing up away from her.

Rhaenyra and Alicent should not be opposites because one is a "good" parent and the other is a "bad" parent, they should be opposites because they produce different iterations of the damage inflicted upon them.

and how people abused the terms creators pet or mary sue/gary sue just because they didnt like them or how they bend over backwards to vilify

for example with mako they complained when ever anything good happened to him ( like him geting a compliment or doing well in his job ( and try to claim him doing well or getting to be a cop is gary sueish by applying modern standards of policing to avatar verse

mako didnt need to be humiliated or punished ( and I remember seeing people liking prince wu just because they hated mako for daring to be a normal teenager who mishandled a love triangle whichc he got thrust into when he wasnt in a position to handle it ( its annoying when Isee the ron the death eater trope where they take a good but flawed character and make them out to be a horrible person like trying to make mako out to be manipulative he never was ( or a womanizer ( ortrying to equate him to the bully from the headband ( I partly feel that some of them just supported korras stunt because they hated mako and wanted to pretend he was in the wrong when korra did cross a line makos only mistake is that he didnt speak up earlier lets be real here korra crossed lines and people could get hurt by it ( mako can be willing to step over some lines when he doesnt think anyone will get hurt by it but balk when ( which ties in how makorra broke up due to mutual flaws neither of them were ready for a relationship with anyone )
or trying to claim mako called asami a leech when he never did that ( mako used a metaphor to tell bolin to end it with eska the equivalent of saying rip off the band aid

If Korra were Katara or Aang or Opal, I’d definitely see the blush as romantic. But Korra is Korra, and that means that this sort of blushiness isn’t actually in-character for her. It’s a lot more consistent with her previous characterization for her to be blushing because she’s feeling insecure about herself than because she’s feeling insecure because of romantic feelings.

(I would like thr idea of a neat fanfic which emphasizes mako overcoming his issue with fear of disappointing people an choosing to put himself first even If it means hurting asami and straight up doing what korra did in b1 and asking korra out while she is with asami and flat out gives her a speech saying the line that she needed to suffer to learn compassion is garbage and she has always been a good person and noting how out of character she acts with asami and the whole vacation thing

((i can't help but imagine a lok remake au which of course changed b4 to imply mako got slot stronger in time skip due to spending all his time training with masters

Korra showed understanding and empathy towards Kuvira. Asami saw her father killed after finally reconciling with him. How does it make any sense for Asami to rein Korra in with regards to Kuvira

I mean, I guess it’s a good thing that they let Korra have her old fire back ( I always felt a true recovery arc should bring back her old fire) , but it sounds like they retconned it back in so Asami could control it for her?

I would go the asami is an equalist spy route both because it puts an end to the love triangle and I feel like continuing it like it was before would cause people to skip lok remake

Even though part of me would be afraid of it coming off like die for our ship trope (which I hate ) or caving to the haters who claim mako needed to be specifically punished for the love triangle dnd claim him ending the show single was karma (when by that logic so should korra and asami they all have responsibility for love triangle )
I would still choose asami the equalist spy
And maybe make omake or a free fic showing what would change if i kept asami the way i did

Mako eventually will confront bolin and talk to him about bolins behavior in b2 and how he seemed to think he was guilty (which bugged him and he didn’t say anything for a while (I once saw a post bringing up how they wish this was brought up and wish asami a whole not visiting mako was brought up (in my snippet of what if asami stayed the same I would also have mako asks this to asami )

And have Lin be mad about what korra did knocking over makos desk etc

Also maybe touch up makos backstory and talent and say post b3 he asked white lotus for a firebending master or help him get stronger for korra (he grew up in the streets and he was used to probending a sport so I feel like by b4 mako should be even with korra in firebending (or better )

Actually make it so mako was alsready able to do with lightning bending to do what azula did in the. Comics but by b4 he develops lightning breath and evolved his electric sense (which he used to only be able to do it by touch and. A certain motions ) so he can know use it psychically from far away and to read someone’s moves but at first its difficult for him
Being able to use it in combat (he invented electric sense (developing it due to a villain he faced and fully figuring out how to constantly have it on in the back of his head after the reunion ep ( bolin learnt a sub element from facing a villain korra learnt a technique due to one and mako develops a technique/sub element in response to a villain

• Korra not writing to Mako or Bolin gets addressed in a much more satisfying way – she says that she’d tried writing a bunch of times, but she didn’t want to be a burden.  Mako responds by saying he’d never think she was a burden.
• Bolin’s part of Reunion, on the other hand, is heavily reworked.  Instead of running into escaped foreigners, he and Varrick run into a rebel group composed largely of people who had escaped after being thrown in prison by Kuvira for protesting against her.  The rebels are actually looking to take down the border station rather than pass through it unnoticed, but they’re okay with letting Bolin and Varrick flee the country after that as long as they help take down the mechsuits first.
• Since Remembrances is basically pointless, it’s skipped entirely.  If there’s still a budget shortfall, it’s dealt with by making a twelve episode season with a low-budget chibified omake episode after the finale.  Or an omake episode based around the Bolin part of Remembrances, because there’s something hilarious about the super-lazy photoshopping in that section.
• The resolution of Korra’s recovery arc (as seen in Beyond the Wilds) is expanded to two episodes, with each of the two episodes having an important secondary plot from elsewhere in the current season – Operation Beifong is shortened to fit as a secondary plot in the first, while Asami visits Hiroshi to discuss technology (and ends up reconciling with him as a result) in the second.  (This leaves four episodes remaining in the season after these two.)
• Instead of the vines reacting to Kuvira’s cutting of the banyan tree by attacking random people, the spiritual problem that Korra’s confronted with is that all of the spirits in Republic City are getting weaker.  Figuring out what’s going on requires some detective work by Korra and Mako, but once Kuvira fires off her spirit cannon in her first full-scale test, Korra’s able to feel the life being sucked out of the spirits and understand the nature of the problem.  She realizes that she has to visit the Spirit World to find a solution, but attempting to do so causes her to flash back to Zaheer trying to kill her.  Just like in the show, she decides that she has to visit Zaheer to work through her trauma… but unlike in the show, that has to wait for the next episode.
• Korra’s visit to Zaheer goes very similarly to the way it does in the show, albeit slightly expanded.  He teaches Korra to accept her flashbacks and push through them before leaving, but she has to confront several more of her traumatic memories after that (and not just the Book 3 ones!) while trying to reestablish her full connection with Raava.  Once Raava and Korra are fully reunited, Korra’s able to find the banyan tree’s Spirit World roots and heal them with energybending, which restores the Republic City spirits to full health.  She herself, of course, feels a lot more like her old self, too.
• The spirits leave because they’re afraid of the consequences of being around Kuvira’s spirit cannon, not because they don’t want to protect the city they live in.
• Asami’s visit to Hiroshi happens after Bolin returns from Zaofu and explains what sort of weapon they’re up against – as angry as she still is, Asami knows that Hiroshi is better at drawing up plans for killer robots than anyone else and is willing to work with him if that’s what it takes to save the city.  She walks out on him once, but comes back because she knows that there are more important things at play than her own feelings.  And by the end, they do actually reconcile, because Hiroshi admits that he was wrong and proves that he’s willing to do whatever it takes to make up for the harm he did.
• The expanded Team Avatar (minus Asami, who’s still working on robot designs) actually does manage to pull off their preemptive strike against Kuvira’s spirit cannon, but gets blindsided by the giant mech after infiltrating her camp.  They kidnap Baatar Jr. in a last-ditch attempt to force Kuvira to surrender, but she attacks the building they’re in anyway and decides to attack Republic City as retaliation (instead of wanting to take over all along).
• Team Avatar tunnels their way out of the rubble and steals an airship, taking Baatar Jr. with them.  He can’t believe the betrayal and tells Team Avatar exactly what they’re up against.  Once they get back to Republic City (beating Kuvira there by a fair amount due to the relative speed of robots and airships), the airbenders start the evacuation while Asami and Varrick upgrade the robots to take the new information into account.  Unfortunately, the evacuation is nowhere near complete by the time Kuvira arrives and Team Avatar is forced to engage her outside of the city to keep her from causing massive casualties.  They’re able to take the fight to Yue Bay, allowing Korra to freeze the mech for long enough for Asami and Hiroshi to cut their way inside.  (Hiroshi still sacrifices himself because it’d be weird not to have casualties, but his and Asami’s arc is more focused before that so I think it could work better.)
• Korra’s fight with Kuvira inside the cockpit of the mech extends out longer, because it was both awesome and way too short.  The episode ends with Korra blocking the spirit cannon and creating the new portal.
• The actual finale involves Korra chasing Kuvira into the Spirit World and trying to save her from herself.  This involves Kuvira getting turned into a little girl and getting stuck in an unpleasant flashback to her abandonment at one point.  It also involves Korra showing Kuvira the damage her spirit cannon was doing to the Spirit World before healing the banyan tree one final time.  And, since it’s a finale, it should also involve Korra protecting Kuvira from spirits who want to destroy her for what she did to them (just before the healing-the-banyan-tree thing).
• Instead of a wedding, the denouement takes place at a press conference where Korra speaks about the damage to the city and how she’s sure the people of the city will be able to pull through and recover the way she did.  Everyone who fought for Team Avatar is acknowledged as heroes, including Hiroshi (posthumously, of course).  The prince asks Mako to help him tell Raiko that he doesn’t actually want to be king, and Mako agrees; Korra insists that there be a democratic method to determining the next ruler of the Earth Kingdom since foreigners choosing heirs to support was clearly a terrible idea.  And, in the end, Korra visits Kuvira in prison and offers her own experience as a way to help her grow.

Kuvira as a member of Team Avatar would have been amazing.  It’d have definitely added a ton of weight to Book 4.

I think her backstory in Zaofu is pretty important to her character, though, so I can’t see her joining the team any sooner than Book 3.  So here’s what I’d do, changing as little of the first half of the show as possible:

Turn Asami into an airbender.  This would create a perfectly reasonable transition point for Asami and the Fire Ferret trio to go separate ways – she’d leave with Tenzin to go to the Northern Air Temple in In Harm’s Way.  That’d leave an empty spot in Team Avatar as of The Metal Clan.
Introduce Korra and Kuvira early in The Metal Clan.  Maybe she’d come over to Korra after Su introduced herself but before Su called Korra on her lie – she’d tell Korra how much the change Korra made in the world inspired her, and maybe express a bit of frustration that Su didn’t mention that she was her foster child.
Have Kuvira assist Su in teaching Korra to metalbend – say, Su uses Kuvira to demonstrate techniques on, or something, then has her go back to her guard duties.
Involve Kuvira directly in Team Avatar’s search for the traitor.  It’d be a good way to show how aggressive she can be towards people who betray her trust, as well as give her more of an opportunity to become closer to the team.
Have Su send Kuvira along with Team Avatar to find Aiwei.  This is the real changeover – from here on, she takes much of Asami’s role.
Korra and Kuvira are the ones who stay behind when Mako and Bolin go into town, giving them more time to talk.
Kuvira’s the one Mako sends off with Korra on Naga.  This requires some rethinking in regards to their capture – earthen barriers aren’t going to mean anything to her.  I’m thinking they get taken by surprise and the Earth Queen’s forces threaten Naga (offscreen; Kuvira tells Korra about it when she wakes up).
The adventure in the desert goes differently (the escape would be more about Kuvira being an unexpected metalbender in a metal airship than about the airship being a hunk of junk), but it offers a good opportunity for Kuvira to be a bit overly willing to do nasty things to the airship crew and Korra to hold her back.  If Korra still ends up frying the sandshark, Kuvira kind of calls her out on it.  ;)
The fight on Laghima’s Peak goes a bit differently – Kuvira doesn’t get thrown off the side by a combustion blast incidentally, but instead jumps over the side purposefully in order to save Tonraq.
Kuvira wants to go to Republic City to make sure Korra’s going to be alright, but Su tells her she can’t.
Cue a very similar Book 4, except that Korra is a lot more invested in Kuvira’s fate, Bolin has a better reason to side with her, and we’ve already seen some of the characteristics that define Kuvira, like her aggression, inability to deal with betrayal, and her issues with Su.

( and the whole putting people from other nations into camps etc is not a thing ( it feels weird given how kuvira cited zaofu as an inspiration for her

Now that’s an option I hadn’t thought of.  o_o

For some reason, I’m kind of imagining fem!Wu as an entirely different character – instead of being a flamboyant (wo)manchild, she’d be a takeoff on Disney Princess culture, where being a princess is all about the dress and finding true love, with very little actual ruling-of-the country involved.  She’d still be entirely inappropriate as a contender for the throne, but in a way that would be less obnoxiously unappealing.

That would also give Mako the perfect opportunity to drag Asami in (“Asami, please, she’s been begging me to let her try on dresses in Little Ba Sing Se but I can’t go into the changing room with her!”), and would also make Asami a very interesting foil for her (as an heiress who had to step up and take control of her father’s company at a young age).

Her character arc would basically revolve around recognizing that, as much as she liked being part of high society, becoming a figurehead queen wasn’t what she really wanted.  Asami could offer her another option at the wedding – as a spokeswoman for Future Industries or an actress in a joint venture film production with Varrick or something – and they could end up hitting it off and getting together as a result.

also on the idea of keeping asami the same as she was in canon ( I would say none of those b3 and b4 moments would be asami showing romantic interest ) korra would send a letter to vent to a someone ( and making a letter makes distance) and if she sent it to mako he would be worried and trying to fix it

( if someone asked me that If I were told to make a story of makorra getting backtogether while keeping b4 and so on for korrasami I would say that they broke up due to the different conflict styles and how korra cant be herself with asami

( also remember how in b4 how korra's scene in the locker has parallels to makos locker scene

I would give mako in b4 a scenee that parallels korra's defeat of a firebending master

maybe even having say mako is the one who decides to go to korra and confess in a way to parallel korra doing that for him

( anyway to be clear even in b4 mako and korra are still capable of arguing the reunion episode involves them arguing then they show conflict resolution and apologizing

the problem isnt that they argued the problem is they didnt know how to handle it
