He is friendly with people but got into a scuffle with the one dog he was paired with, so he is in a kennel by himself.  ‼️ Additional information: Boulder was paired for 5 days with this other dog (intact male) before they had a scuffle. Why did the shelter pair 2 intact males?? After this, the shelter did not attempt to pair Boulder again due to his back leg issue and difficulty manuevering with it. He does not react to dogs in neighboring kennels.

Boulder is HW negative but came in limping and his left rear paw folds inward.  That leg requires amputation

Special notes:

-LH limb politeal lymph node enlargement

-LH MCS 1/3, ulcers on top of toes, worn nail, loss of conscious proprioception

I’m sharing this here because many of us in Orlando and Central Florida frequent Polk County, or even adopt from there. While most FL counties (Orange, Lake, Hillsborough) are moving toward No-Kill status, Polk County is moving backward and are using taxpayer money to do it.

Loking into the 2024–2025 data, and the lack of transparency is quite shocking. I wanted to share the statistics the Polk County Sheriff's Office and the Board of Commissioners aren't putting in their press releases:

  1. The "Business" of Euthanasia:

In 2024, the shelter euthanized over 3,500 cats. Shockingly, they sold 1,083 of those bodies to a biomedical research company for $10 each. When there is a financial incentive for "cadaver sales," there is no incentive for life-saving reform.

  1. The Funding Gap ($6 Million in Unused Funds!)

The Sheriff’s Office claims they don’t have the resources for foster programs or low-cost spay/neuter. Yet, in late 2025, Sheriff Grady Judd returned nearly $6 MILLION in unspent funds back to the county. Meanwhile, the shelter still lacks basic air conditioning for the animals (probably why they don't allow cell phones in the shelter)

  1. "Lost" Animals:

In 2024 alone, over 400 animals died in their kennels overnight, and over 500 were reported as "escaped." These numbers are curious, being that the facility is run by the Sheriff’s Office

  1. The War on Transparency (this is the one that really made me pay attention)

Polk is one of the only shelters in the state that BANS cell phones and cameras inside the kennels. You cannot walk through without an armed escort. They have also canceled the internal volunteer and foster programs. They are actively preventing the public from documenting the conditions inside.

  1. Rejected Expertise:

Polk leadership reportedly rejected over $500,000 in grant money and staffing from Best Friends Animal Society—expert help specifically meant to implement proven, no-kill strategies.

What can we do?

After a massive turnout at the commissioner meeting this past week, they’ve already started limiting public comments to just 15 people to try and quiet things down. I wanted to share this because even if you can’t make it to a meeting in person, we need to get the word out before the next one on May 19th. There's an active push happening NOW for a 5-point plan to finally bring some transparency to the shelter.

However, since I cannot link petitions here, the most powerful thing you can do is email the Polk County Board of Commissioners and Sheriff Grady Judd directly. Under Florida law, your emails to these official addresses are public records and must be kept on file.

You can direct your emails to the Board of County Commissioners and Sheriff Grady Judd:

District 1: Becky Troutman: BeckyTroutman@polkfl.gov

District 2: Rick Wilson: RickWilson@polkfl.gov

District 3 (Vice Chair): Bill Braswell: BillBraswell@polkfl.gov

District 4 (Chair): Martha Santiago: MarthaSantiago@polkfl.gov

District 5: Michael Scott: MichaelScott@polkfl.gov

Sheriff Grady Judd: gjudd@polksheriff.org or sheriff@polksheriff.org

Please consider sharing this post or spreading the word to your friends and family. A facility like this only stays in the dark when people stop looking. By sharing, you are helping us keep the spotlight on the animals who need us to be their voice.

Every share, every conversation, and every new person who learns about this brings us one step closer to real change. Thank you for caring and for helping us make sure these pets are no longer forgotten. ❤️

Hi neighbors, I’m reaching out because Orange County Animal Services (OCAS) is at max capacity. There are amazing dogs on the "Urgent List" who are running out of time simply because there isn't enough kennel space.I’m looking for local "Bridge Fosters" to help save these lives.

🏠 What fostering entails:

100% FREE: The rescue provides the food, the crate, and covers all medical/vet costs. Your only "cost" is a little bit of space and love.

It’s Temporary: You are the "bridge" until they find a forever home.

How to Apply: I am working with two incredible local rescues that pull these urgent dogs from the shelter. Please fill out an application at either of these links to get started:

🐾 Noodle’s Rescue: https://www.noodlesanimalrefuge.com/foster-services

🐾 Raiden’s Haven: https://www.raidenshaven.com/foster

Why this is urgent: OCAS is overwhelmed. While we fight for long-term reform across Central Florida, these specific dogs need a physical place to go RIGHT NOW.

If you can spare a corner of your home for a few weeks, you will quite literally be the reason a dog’s life is saved. 🐾❤️

Hey everyone! I’m looking into helping out at Orange County Animal Services (OCAS) and wanted to see if anyone wants to join me.

If you’ve ever thought about fostering, it literally only takes 5 minutes to apply online—it’s super quick and easy! They provide all the food and medical supplies, you just provide the couch and the love.

Also, is anyone interested in volunteering together? I really want to sign up, but I’d love to have some "emotional support" so we can go through the process as a team haha. 😂

Let me know if you’re down!

Hey everyone,

I wanted to start by saying A HUGE THANK YOU. Last week’s post about "Sweet Boy"—the 2-year-old pup on the euthanasia list at OCAS—got over 40k views in just a few days. Because so many of you cared enough to click, share, and reach out, he was officially saved.

After reading through all your comments and PMs, it’s clear Orlando is eager to help, but many people aren't sure how the process works. Since we can’t post individual "Last Chance" pets here every week, I wanted to put together a general guide to answer the most common questions I received.

Right now, our local shelters and rescues are at crisis capacity for both dogs and cats (especially kittens). The absolute biggest thing they need is foster homes.

The Essentials of Fostering:

It’s 100% Free: The rescue or shelter covers all vet bills, heartworm prevention, medical care, food, crates, bowls, and leashes. You provide the home; they provide the supplies.

It’s Temporary: You can choose long-term fostering, or even just do "weekend staycations" to give an animal a much-needed break from the loud shelter environment.

Space is not an issue: You don’t need a huge house. If you have a spare bathroom for a transition period, or even just a corner for a crate, you have enough room to save a life.

You have Support: You aren't doing this alone. You’ll typically be paired with a "foster mentor" to help with any questions or advice.

Fostering is the perfect "loophole" if you love pets but aren't ready for a 15-year commitment. You are the bridge between a stressful kennel and a happy forever home.

Note: I am not affiliated with any specific shelter or rescue—I’m just a neighbor who wants to advocate for these guys.

Since a few people have messaged me privately asking for names of specific groups, I figured I would drop a few of the most active ones here for everyone to see! (Also in the comments)

If you want to help the animals in the most immediate danger, these are the best places to start:

Orange County Animal Services OCAS: This is the main county shelter where the "last chance" lists originate. They provide all vet care and supplies.

Raiden’s Haven Raiden’s Haven: These guys are heroes—they pull dogs directly from the OCAS euthanasia lists. They are 100% foster-based and provide everything you need to succeed.

Touch of Grey Rescue Touch of Grey: If you have a soft spot for seniors or special needs dogs, this is the group. They focus on giving older dogs a comfortable home and cover all medical expenses.

Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando Pet Alliance: A great option for both dogs and cats. They have a massive support network and are especially helpful if you want to foster kittens.

Happy Trails Animal Rescue Happy Trails: They focus on dogs that need a little extra TLC or a break from the shelter. Very supportive for first-time fosters!

Every one of these groups is currently at or over capacity. If you’ve been thinking about it, now is the time to reach out!
