9/8/2026: Very timid and shut down in kennel. Approaching kennel dog is pressed against the wall with low head, wrinkled forehead, and slightly shaking. I open the door but dog remains with low head and avoids eye contact. I enter and squat next to her… I was able to pet her slowly and gently but she still continued to avoid eyes contact, dog was frozen. Had to carry her to new kennel no muzzle needed.
9/7/2026: Approaching kennel dog was pancaked in the back of kennel and had a low head and was avoiding eye contact. I tried baby talking her and she would slightly turn to look at me. I slipped the leash on but she continued to be pancaked. I then just lightly muzzled her and carried her to new kennel. Once I set her down she sat in the corner shaking and with low head. I was able to gently pet her.
9/6/2026: Hiding face at back of kennel, lying down flat and trying to shrink away from me when I squatted down in front of kennel. Would glance up at me with worried brow when I baby talked and when she looked up I lassoed leash on, but she wouldn’t budge so I slowly reached in and removed leash. Kennel was clean so I left her inside and placed some treats on her towel.

9/5/2026: Weighed 46.2 lbs. Vaccinated (DA2PP-V, Bordetella, Rabies), dewormed, and given flea prevention. HW Low Positive.

📝 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:

9/1/2026: Womp was very vocal in her kennel throughout the day during cleaning, when left outside, and as customer walked through the row, quieted when row was empty, tossed treats or given rawhide, wagging tail, dilated eyes, front paws on door, peering over cover or wall, whimpering.

9/1/2026: Womp is standing on hind legs, forward body forward barking with dilated eyes and high flagging tail. I had to continuously toss treats over as I was walking to try and distract to get him quiet. He was very reactive during my interaction with the customer.

8/31/2026: Move adopt this morning. Tappy toes and fast wagging tail, at the end of cleaning, began to high pitched bark but settled with treats. After cleaning, a volunteer was walking dogs in the row. When with the neighboring dog Apollo, Womp was on his hind legs looking over the wall growling and deep alarm barking at the volunteer in Apollo’s kennel, still loudly growling and deep forward barking, following from inside the kennel when volunteer took Apollo out on leash and walked past his kennel.

8/29/2026: Womp greeted me at the front of the kennel with a loose wiggly body, he was easy to leash and walked on a semi-tight leash to the runs. In the runs he was running up and down the run playing with the puppy in the next run over. When bringing Womp inside he was easy to leash and walked on a more loose leash back to his kennel.

8/28/2026: Womp presented a wiggly body, front tappy feet and open mouth with loose tongue. He walked on a semi forward leash but did not pull very hard. Was able to remove leash with no issues.

8/27/2026: Womp presented a neutral body, mid slow wagging tail and began to wiggly when I opened his kennel door. Was able to leash with no issues. He walked on a forward leash while occasionally picking from trail of treats. When it was time to come back inside he would jump away while avoiding the leash. After a couple seconds he play bowed and I was able to throw leash on him. Walked back inside and into kennel with no issues.

8/27/2026: Womp was medicating dogs in this row, Womp was barking nearby. When I got to his kennel, he held a tense body, whale eyed, and had his limp curled up. I offered him some wet food and he relaxed immediately. He began wagging his tail and would sit when I told him to. I offered more wet food each time I got him to sit. He sniffed my hand through the kennel door and licked it. I offered more wet food.

8/26/2026: K9 whale eyes, tense body and air snap at my hands when trying to place ID band. K9 tried to get away when muzzled and low growled at multiple employees.

8/26/2026: Weighed 50.0 lbs. Unable to deworm due to K9 air snapping at hands, low growl with whale eyes and tense body. Vaccinated with Rabies, DA2PP-V and Bordetella, and given flea prevention. HW Negative.

Dogs are given only a few days after their “available for adoption date” before they are scheduled for euthanasia. In some cases, dogs are killed ON the date they are “legally available for euthanasia” according to AVAS. Consider all dogs “red listed” or “urgent.”

AVAS will continue to follow the protocols in place for the health/safety of the animals in our care.
