Peal and stick WRB underneath solid wood subfloor in pier and beam home

Hello! Any thoughts on installing a peal and stick WRB (weather resistant barrier) (maybe ProClima Adhero 1000) against the subfloor that is accessible in a 1949 pier and beam home?

The problem is that there is a lot of air leakage into the crawlspace. Here in Austin TX, the crawlspace gets so much leakage from the conditioned space that it is just as cold as the conditioned space. The problem is that in this 1800 square feet home, the subfloor is made from diagonal tongue and groove solid wood boards (great wood and in great condition). The floor board (on top of the subfloor) are themselves solid wood tongue and groove boards but oriented different and with different shape per board (smaller). The only barrier between the subfloor and the floor is tar paper. In some areas of the house there is no subfloor and the floor boards are installed directly to the joists.

I was thinking something like Adhero 1000 would allow the wood to breath in the case that there were ever a water leak in the conditioned space as well stop airflow or conditioned air leakage.
I was thinking I could order a roll and cut out pieces I could place in between joists. Ideally, I’d redo the entire house’s floor but the house is currently being rented out. I mainly want to improve the comfort of the house by reducing air leakage from the conditioned space to the outside. Any thoughts on this approach?

Has anyone booked a long trip specifically to get into a long list of audiobooks?

Hi! I recently completed a cycling tour from Austin TX to Panama. It took me 8 months. It gave a chance to catch up on a ton of audiobooks along the way.
It made me think this could be a permanent way of learning. Exploring, cycling and learning. Entire curriculums could be built around cycling and listening.
One example learning or listening plan could involve learning/listening about Central America’s history while cycling through the region.
I did this by myself, but I feel it could have been far more rich if done in large groups and have discussion about the content. Maybe even some tests (maybe). And honestly, depending on the region of the world, it can be quite an affordable way to learn.
Any thoughts?

Adhero 1000 feels thick enough

Hi! I am converting a shed in my yard into a conditioned room. I am using ProClima’s Adhero 1000. I considered using the 3000 since it is what I most commonly see others use online (blue color). I just wanted to share, I had good experience adding it myself.

Does anyone else have experience with peel and stick house water protection barriers?

Kaolin clay as a natural protection to wood from mold ?

Hi! I saw this 2019 video from Matt Risinger’s The Build Show where they go over this one builder’s strategies to build a toxin free home:

https://youtu.be/KiZ1COo27NQ?is=0F6f79Thg8DOUDtI

In the video, they mention using “kaolin clay” to protect the wood framing from mold. The video script states the following:

> The clay (kaolin) acts as a natural mold inhibitor and fungicide so it's kind of a natural antimicrobial … instead of spraying
some of the other stuff that's maybe has some chemicals in it to prevent that in the future this one is gonna be a more natural base.

> … the hydric buffer capacity … (the clay) gonna act kind of as an absorbent so in case that wall cavity does get a little wet in with a future water leak or whatever it's gonna help absorb that moisture and hold it and then release it over amount of time.

The question is: has anyone tried this and has it worked for you?

Cheers

Why such a wide difference in calories between kombucha brands?

The brand on the left (Puget Sound kombucha from Seattle) says 15 calories and 4 grams of sugar per service (8 fluid ounces).

The second one on the right states 40 calories and 8 total grams of carbohydrates. In Austin, Texas, the ktonic one has the best balance between easily accessible kombucha and one with the lowest amount of sugar and calories. I recently traveled to Seattle and came across the one on the left. It tasted great. No issues, but then the wide difference in sugar got me thinking. I have never made kombucha at home to know why some kombucha brands manage to post lower sugar content.

Home Depot should have a coffee shop or cafeteria attached to it.

Builders need a place to review their plans.
Contractors need a place to make adjustments while replenishing their energy.
Coffee and food would accomplish this. Either this or a roofed area for food trucks.

What is your favorite local kombucha in town ?

Central Market, Buddha’s Brew, KTonic, Casper Fermentables. Which one is your favorite? Are there any kombuchas I am not mentioning?

My favorite is probably Casper Fermentable’s turmeric one. It’s caffeine free and I think Casper Fermentables offers the kombucha with the lowest amount of calories and sugar.

I am sad Wheatsville Coop will not longer be near UT. They are the only place in North Austin that carries or sells Casper Fermentables products :(

Is a pouring a concrete pad and having the roof posts attach to the pad the best way to build a roof right beside this tree?

I am trying to avoid affecting the trees root system while allowing people to park as close as possible to the tree to max out parking lot use and space.

Does anyone ever consider returning to their home country despite being able to legally reside in the US?

Hi! After having crossed my 30s (33 now), I have felt a stronger and stronger pull to return to my country of birth and the country that raised me (Panama).

My parents are becoming older and slowly face more and more health challenges.

Many of the friends I had made in my 20s are now living in the suburbs and starting families. I feel out of place.

My career feels stagnant and given the rise of AI, I am not sure it will get any better unless I made more drastic changes.

I don’t have much saved up, but I don’t mind going back to school at my home country once I am back.

I have my US residency, but not citizenship.

Returning to my home country for some reason feels right as I tell recount my story to myself in my mind. Has anyone experienced the same force at some point while living in their host country ? (A longing to return to one’s country)

Financially, returning may not make sense, but spiritually, it may. It seems it is worth a try at least for a year. I came to the US at 21 and I am now 33, and single; never married.

The US tense political environment also seems to contribute to the “out of place” feeling in the US. The US has such a negative image abroad that non of my family members want to come visit

What is the “run” to use for calculating rafter cuts in a 2:12 pitch scenario?

Option A doesn’t take into account the bird’s mouth cut while option B does. I am confused on how to go about making rafter cuts in a small 7x12 porche roof, but first I wanted to ensure I understand what is considered as the “run”.

In Option B, the rafter’s bird mouth cut has already been made and is resting over the beams.

Where to place ridge or exhaust vent for this shed’s soffit-ridge roof ventilation?

The intake vent will be on the soffit of lower side of this lean-to roof. My intuition tells me I can put the exhaust vent on the high side’s fascia or the soffit as well. Somewhere at the top edge of the metal roof could work, but I am not sure if those are sold for lean-to roofs. Any thoughts?
