In short: Chinese adventurer -> Take over Byzantine Empire -> Form Rome
In long:
So, I was thinking about some sort of reverse-weeb-challenge (where some English lad travels to Japan to marry his anime waifu), and thought about how the Han culture brings some interesting baggage with it westwards that plays into admin empire. So, I'll have a Han character who I'll keep Han and try to get to the top of the Byzantine Empire.
Then I thought that's too easy so obviously gotta add Rome to that, so I went to check requirements to form Rome, just to make sure there's no gotcha about being Han. Well, according to the wiki there ain't, but if I don't have Latin or Eastern Roman heritage, then I have to have a compatible religion. Either has to be Greco-Roman (lol) or Abrahamic.
So I'm gonna have to convert to local Orthodox again or something? Sounds boring! But wait. Abrahamic is quite the broad set... and wait... it includes Dualism... which includes Mingism! Perfect! A Chinese adventurer with a Chinese religion.
There we have it then, the full package: The goal is to form a Mingist Han Roman Empire. That'll show the Germans.
Got any suggestions, tips, tricks or anything on what to look out for or keep in mind while pursuing this?
Hiding away them dogs, to keep the show SFW.
I was thinking about who'd be the most likely character to say "nice cock", and there's now no contest that it would be Flowery. He'd be saying it to Asgore of course, but notably Asgore is also very high on the scale of probability that he himself would say "nice cock" to someone.
A new file has been discovered within game files, simply called newracemambo.gif, shown here, with a mysterious and so far unknown embedded message of "Umazing!" Lore experts consider a possible link to Y'shtola.
R5: Title. I looked over to Europe to see why they're crusadin', and was surprised to see a random blue speck in the middle of Europe in the religion view. East Francia is cut in two by a Bavaria that's not in Bavaria, and meanwhile Ulm is independent and Jewish.
Karling Europe imploding on itself 20 years into the game as usual when you're not keeping watch over them.
I decided to roleplay as Junior being asked to get one sock.
Translation:
Falstaff: Hello
Me: Hi, what's up?
F: Good, did you need anything?
M: Yes, I need 100 socks, please.
F: Oh, 100 socks? Do you want small or big socks?
M: Big socks, please.
F: Good! Would you like cheerful or plain socks?
M: No idea!
F: Here are your socks. Goodbye.
Back when Ever Crisis did the previous chapter, I made this post about it: https://www.reddit.com/r/FinalFantasyVII/comments/1snyfqq/the_newest_chapter_of_ever_crisis_might_give_a/
The significance is that Ever Crisis has now moved past FFVII Rebirth's timeframe, so we might glean some suggestions on changes in direction they'll take with FFVII Revelation. Ever Crisis has for the most part made a relatively faithful adaptation of the original FFVII script, but it has notably taken some liberties based on the style of game EC is, and also changes from the Remake trilogy (such as Dyne's fate).
Anyways, they now released a new chapter again, so I figured I'd do another writeup about it!
I will mainly focus on notable changes compared to the original, and other things worth mention. I'll try to include screenshots of each new area.
EP. 1 Where the Lifestream Leads
The last chapter ended as the gang was heading to Mideel, so this one starts as they arrive in Mideel.
There's a black and a white cat (not counting The Cat). Where's the dog (not counting The Dog)???
Mideel looks overall bigger. The clinic is bigger and better looking. Otherwise things go pretty much verbatim.
Here's the other side of the clinic too as they first arrive.
EP. 2 The Power of the Lifestream
The doc explaining things to the rest of the gang. Another white cat!
This episode is basically just the bit of dialogue without Tifa, plus a few random monsters attack just to insert a random battle.
EP. 3 Tifa's Decision
... is to leave the party. Just verbatim OG dialogue up to the others leaving for the Highwind.
EP. 4 To Combat Shinra
The Cat giving us a view to \"Gya ha ha\" and \"Kya ha ha\".
Pretty much just line for line OG dialogue here too. We end with Cid being volunteered to become the new leader and the Highwind setting off for Corel.
EP. 1 Corel Mako Reactor
We're \"fighting to stop the train\".
This section is very truncated. They do quick exposition on Highwind about having to stop the train, then you quickly fight a couple of Sweepers and then the town is saved.
Interestingly the dialogue here does take a somewhat significant departure from the original game. The townsfolk are very positive about the situation and they tell Barret that he can come back, an offer he wasn't given in the original.
Ep. 2 Fort Condor
We're \"fighting in Fort Condor\".
Pretty much same deal as the last section. Quick exposition, quick battle, quick "we got the huge materia" talk afterwards. Interestingly, by the way, even though the story still declares Cid the leader here, gameplaywise Barret is actually the one who's locked in as leader for these sections.
Ep. 1 The Planet's Roar
This episode returns to form on basically just following the script. The gang has returned to Mideel, Ultima Weapon comes in to say hi, we absolutely stomp its ultimate ass and it runs away. Mideel blows up, while Tifa and Cloud fall to their untimely death.
There's a tiny little extra gag as the gang escapes Mideel, as it shows Nanaki for some reason being super scared and just lying down covering his face, prompting Vincent to help him up and get running. Dog behaviour.
Ep. 2 Within Memories
I was worried about this section with the directions the Remake trilogy has taken, but considering EC has followed the OG with everything relating to this stuff, it's not too big of a surprise that this is pretty much the OG scenes too.
Tifa, after wandering around a bit on a black screen.
Everything here is line for line, shot for shot the original game.
The section ends after the water tower, just as a cut since the next section starts right off from the next line of dialogue.
Ep. 3 Searching for Memories
Baby Cloud arrives and they head for Tifa's house.
EDITORIAL NOTE: Ok so showing EVERY new scene apparently wasn't a good idea because there's a limit of 20 images in one post. Whoops! Well, hopefully there aren't any other vital images to show. But I imagine we've probably covered most of what this chapter will include. The Nibelheim scenes are basically the same as the game has already had in the earlier flashbacks anyway.
Anyways, everything is on track here as well, with Tifa's memorable gang of friends and all.
I'll also take a quick side here and mention the music. The songs are of course all the original ones, using the Remake trilogy arrangements, or other updated arrangements. Here we get On The Other Side Of The Mountain, which plays as Cloud narrates this day and it sounds superb. I don't think this song exists within the Remakes yet. Hopefully this arrangement is the one they use for Revelation too.
Ep. 4 The Truth About the Truth
This section starts as Cloud and Tifa return to the gates of Nibelheim and head to the reactor.
Young Tifa gets sliced, breaks her neck, black haired Cloud comes in, gets stomped by Sephiroth, breaks his neck and a mysterious soldier arrives.
In other words it's all going on track here too. Main theme playing, flashbacks of flashbacks, hero moment, all of it.
The only minor detail change is that Cloud and Sephiroth's final confrontation happens back in the Jenova room and Sephiroth is flung down into the mako pit underneath it, instead of further outside in the facility, but apart from the location the scene plays out the same.
Ep. 5 Waking from the Fantasy
Tifa and Cloud wake up surrounded by the rest of the gang in the ruins of Mideel. Verbatim dialogue.
Ops room on Highwind, same deal, trains, offs, nos.
But... the next place we're going to is... Rocket Town!? Guess we're switching Junon & Rocket Town around.
That's it! That's where this chapter ends.
So the overall TL;DR is that very little changed from the original.
The biggest changes were with the huge materia quests, but that's quite understandable as they're mainly just gameplay/minigame heavy sections. Memorable and iconic, but they wouldn't translate very well into EC.
I'll say I was worried they'd mess around with some very pivotal stuff here, so I'm happy to see that it was not only a faithful remake of the original game, but also didn't really cut corners. There were a few "extra" lines cut off here and there, and the translation was occasionally slightly updated, but for the most part everything was word for word the original game's dialogue.
Anyways that's it, see you in three months I guess!
Annoying Dog pops out of nowhere and speaks in a normal voice through a voice clip: "And Rouxls Kaard is in a monogamous relationship."
Rumours say other criminals still at large, public advised to steer clear of dungeon.
Just a lil' delay.
My Duolingo story is that I've used Duolingo a few times in the past to play for a few days before trips abroad, but haven't really used it much besides that.
I'm from Finland, but during school didn't pick up any extra languages, so I just speak Finnish, Swedish and English. I've recognized the utility of knowing more languages, but I've just prioritized other subjects higher.
That said, I've had some extra time now since the start of June and I was thinking about ways to fill that time. I decided to start learning a language over the summer with Duolingo! I considered several language options, largely with emphasis on usefulness in my work and business. Mandarin was a top contender, and I also considered Japanese. In the end though, geopolitically German is the most useful for me in my sector in Finland, besides the languages I already speak (and Russian).
So, how has it been going?
Pretty well, actually. I was quite prepared for basic German to be rather easy. Just by knowing English and Swedish, there's already so much that's familiar and natural. The most foreign concepts are the hugely gendered language, as well as the word order. I was also struggling with the pronunciation of the "r". I was managing fine until I got hit with the double r in "Frankreich". But instead of putting too much of my focus on that one thing, I decided that I might practice that particular pronunciation at a later time, and instead adopted a more southern pronunciation of "r". It's not the way the Duolingo NPCs pronounce things, but it's conveniently the same sound as you use for "r" in Finnish.
My goal now is to first of all change that 14 into a 15 tomorrow as I finish the current track. Then I'll continue on at least through July and August with more "intensive" Duolingoing. After that I'll probably seek out some formal classes as well.
Besides Duolingo I haven't really done too much German learning yet. At this point it doesn't feel too productive to watch German TV or anything for an example. But the one other thing I've done is that I've been playing one of my favourite games, Final Fantasy IX, in German. I know the story and dialogue through and through in English, so it's been fun playing it in German. There's a lot of stuff I don't understand, especially since many characters' dialogue is written with an "accent". But on the other hand I've also learnt a lot of extra vocabulary, and gotten exposed to a lot of less formal language.
Anyhow, that's how this month's gone by!
"Ok I've got an amazing story here but how do I set up the scenario... Hmm... Ah, I've got it! Frieren is out of money. Brilliant, simply brilliant." -Frieren writer Kanehito Yamada, probably
