My son is getting hard to talk to and is making increasingly erratic life decisions?

My son is in his 20s and lives in the same metropolitan area that we do. He is very much a hard worker, usually working both a full time and a part-time job, although in school he didn’t really apply himself as much as could.

Personality wise, he has become really quite dour in person, whenever we meet up he is quit quiet and really only give very short, vague answers. He gives sort of one word texts, although about once a month he will randomly call extremely upset, crying about how he’s lost, has no friends, doesn’t do anything, is lonely etc. then it’s back to one word answers.

Career wise his full time was being a teacher, he was at one district for 3 years, won some awards, was in the paper (for good reasons!), then he quit and flirted between two other districts but he’s talked about how he really wants his old position back.

He’s had an idea about going overseas for an MBA for awhile, then he told us he quit his job and is now going. Three weeks out now he says he wants get his mba at a school in state but he also says if all else fails he’ll just move to New York City and hope for the best.

Basically he’s going through a quarter life crisis but i also think hes really alone but doesnt want to talk to
us. Any advice? We just want to talk our son an offer advice

Anyone apply to a position in the evening, only to be rejected the next morning?

I applied to Austin ISD last night, and received a rejection this morning before 8am (making me think nobody actually read it). What gives?

Those who have their “dream job” or know someone who does, how did you/they get there?

I had a friend in high school who was kind of a strange one. Was really into metal music and dinosaurs. We lost contact during college but I know he was majoring in paleontology. I kind of had a “well good luck with that degree thought”. I looked him up today, and he is the head of the education department for a famous museum in a super cool city, and he designs all sorts of dinosaur exhibits/dinosaur related education material for kids. I was kind of like “holy shit! That guy really liked dinosaurs and he got a job working with dinosaurs”.

Anyone else sort of like that? Or know someone like that? Who had some oddball interest… and turned it into a dream career.

Why does high school seem to have such a hold over adults?

I see this in particular online and with politics, where people sort of refer to politicians with stereotypes of the geek, bullying, football players, cheerleaders. Which feels ridiculous when sometimes it’s referring to an 80 year old politician.

And there is that stupid out of focus photo of football player talking to a cheerleader that always sort of seems to go viral with thousands of quotes/replies.

Why does high school seem to have sort of a mythic status in the US? How much of this true vs engineered by bots (if so why?)

Why is American Airlines sometimes called “a credit card company that flies planes”?

I know that Economy basically breaks even for planes (if that). And I know AA has those credit cards. I have one. But what is the scheme here? Is AA getting a kick back whenever someone gets a card? Do they own the cards?

Or is this an inaccurate statement?

How do you charge a GoPro battery?

When my GoPro is plugged in, I see the little battery icon and it’s at 0%. When I unplug the camera from the wall charger it turns off. It’s been at 0% for a couple of hours now.

I have tried turning the camera on, removing the battery, and putting the battery back in. No such luck. Any ideas?

Has anyone had an Olympus TG6 just not turn on?

I have really dove with it much. When I first got it, it immediately leaked and I sent it in to be repaired. It was under warranty. I got it back, it’s worked since. I’ve mainly used it in fresh water, and one salt water trip. Maybe 20 dives. Since the initial leak I always kept it in a housing. I put it away for a while and now that I take it out, it won’t charge. It won’t turn on. No lights, bricked. Anyone have any advice?

Those of you in England, What do you think about requiring goggles for mixed leagues?

I’m not entirely sure if it applies to my university’s college leagues but I assume so. I haven’t heard much though. I’m surprised there hasn’t been a crackdown on wearing mouthguards.

Do you think Denton is still “music town”?

Maybe it’s just because I’ve done some traveling outside of Denton this summer and kind of compared Denton to other towns. but does anyone think that Denton is perhaps not music town anymore?

I always sort of pictured Denton as having a lot of music venues, and of course they close and change and all, but it sort of seems like those that have closed have not really been replaced. Ans Jazz Fest is sort of the last music festival standing but they seem to diminishing every year.

And for as dominate as the UNT Music Program is, they don’t really seem to have much influence on greater Denton. Maybe I am comparing to pre pandemic, but it feels like UNT Music has sort of retreated to on-campus.

It also seems like Denton City Council is not even attempting “music town”. Everything is sort of about the Halloween Town (which has been a big success go for it), and I know there’s been personal disagreements with Jazz Fest dudes.

However, I could be totally wrong, and also maybe the house show scene is still where it’s at, going to have to have some young cool UNT students hop on here.

Anyways, discuss? Denton Musictown: Dead, dying, always been dead, I’m just out of touch and it’s thriving, same as it ever was?

Is the heat going to start to impact development in Dallas?

It sort of seems like that the summer is stretching now from May to Halloween. I may be a heat stroke coming but I just didn’t think summers use to be this long.

I’ve seen several threads on X (and Reddit) about where young upwardly mobile graduates should be moving and… it’s not Dallas. Usually when Dallas or Austin are mentioned the first thing people talk about is the heat. And other places get hot, but Dallas/Austin seem unique in just how long the heat lasts.

And I read a thread that while places like New York/Boston/East Coast cities saw an outflow of people during the pandemic, now there is more of an inflow (and they are considered the places to be for something like Finance). Also from limited personal experience I know a couple of fairly well off families that were sort of expecting their college graduate to settle around here only for them to just go to the east coast or Denver, even if they were fewer family connections there.

So I guess, do we think the heat and increasingly long summers will start negatively impacting Dallas development?

What are the basic plays to learn with limited time/limited experience?

Looking at playing for my (UK) university team, where there will be some experienced people but a lot of rookies. About 7 weeks from freshers week to first game. What are the basic plays we’d probably be learning?

Anyone have a big age gap between siblings? What is it like?

Asking for the perspective of the siblings or parents. Id guess it’s pretty normal to have a few years between siblings, but I fairly frequently see on other subreddits where say… say there is a 14 year old who is about to have an infant sibling.

Anybody go through this? What is it like?

How do people without a degree in finance get careers in finance?

So I’ve been doing some LinkedIn stalking, and I see how some people who have degrees in stuff like… History or Government… are starting careers in Finance. And these are jobs just starting out vs working in a job for ten years and then pivoting horizontally. And while comparison is the theft of joy, I can’t even really find a job in my degree field.

Does this boil down to networking? Name of school?

What skills do you regularly practice?

One thing I do at the end of every dive is a mask removal and replacement. It was always the the skill I was most uncertain of and I figure most of the time my mask will come off suddenly (like being kicked off), so I always want to practice. Are there other people who practice skills regularly?

I just cut my long hair off.

All through high school I was a dude with long hair, now I’m joining ROTC and had to get my hair in regs for orientation. It super short and clean cut. It feels so weird but I actually think it looks good.

What happened to lockers?

I only started teaching after Covid and what I was told was lockers went away because of Covid (doesn’t make super sense to me, were lockers super spreaders?) and have never come back. Is that the real reason?

I’m in Texas so maybe lockers are still used in other places, but basically every school I know has limited lockers.

Why does Indonesia seem to have zero impact/influence?

Jakarta recently became the the biggest city in the world, but nobody talks about Indonesia. There are no Indonesian restaurants, I broadly couldn’t tell you what Indonesia music sounds like or Indonesia film looks like. I would say there are a lot of people who couldn’t even place where Jakarta is.

However, I would also say I’ve never heard anything negative about Indonesia or what Indonesia has done. It just sort of seems to exist.

Why does it seem that for such a big country, there is zero influence?
