Help me decide what games to buy!

So, the ArcSys humble bundle is here, and though I already have strive, I am interested in some of the other games. It's BBTAG, BBCF, UNI2, the old GG games, and some other assorted ArcSys stuff. All that for 20 bucks seems like a pretty good deal. However, fatal fury COTW is also on sale for 15 bucks. And Granblue versus rising is also on sale for 15 bucks. I could also get the deluxe editions of these games with some or all DLC for 30 bucks for City of the wolves, and 22 bucks for Granblue. If I wanted to spend like 40 dollars max, what's the best combo of these games to get? I did try the Granblue demo (which is somehow the full game basically? I can use every character in ranked, aside from DLC), I thought it was decently fun, but so far I thought most of the characters felt a little too simple. I did have fun with Ferry though.

I feel bad that I’m not enjoying this game

I just bought this game on sale because the art style is cool, and I’ve been looking for a new fighting game. Well, after a few hours of playing, too much to refund I believe, I have to say, I’m not really having fun. I feel like the characters are very….simple? Maybe I’m missing something, but movement feels very limited, and every character has only 3-4 specials. I was just expecting a little more. Am I approaching this the wrong way? I’m not trying to hate on the game or anything, I’m just not really clicking with it.

Sell me on City of the Wolves

I'm a pretty casual FGC player, I'm Diamond on SF6, I go 0-2 at locals. I don't know much about COTW, but I've wanted to play a new fighting game, and I've heard it's good, and it's on sale. But I have no idea what to expect from Fatal Fury. What exactly makes it unique? What's the appeal? That sort of stuff. Any help would be appreciated.

Edit: Should mention that I live in Texas, apparently game is very popular in Mexico so I'm sure to find some good matches online.

Help me decide on some games?

I want to buy 2-3 games this summer for the steam sale. I want the first game to be a fighting game. A couple of the ones I could buy are: Fatal Fury: COTW, Rivals of Aether 2, Granblue Fantasy Versus, and BlazBlue: Central fiction. I can’t really decide, I’m a big fan of melee, so Rivals seems fun. I also enjoy traditional FGC stuff though, in particular street fighter 6 and Guilty gear Strive. I dislike tag fighters, so it’s good that none of these are tag games. Really my main concern is good netcode and the ability to always find a match online. I do like fighting games with more diverse rosters generally speaking.

As for the other games, I was looking at Rain World (+DLC), Hades 2 (loved hades 1, so this is probably a slam dunk), the bio shock collection, XCOM 2 (+DLC), and a bundle that contains Prey and Control (+DLC for both). I’m pretty sure I’ll like all of these games no matter what I buy. I figured I’d just tell you guys some games I like, and you could judge based off of that. my favorites are Elden Ring, outer wilds, dead space, Binding of Isaac, Hollow Knigh. Stuff like that. I also like some turn based games, like Persona and Final Fantasy. Really just tell me what game is the most bang for my buck.

Is it normal to not know what I'm doing?

All I've heard about Outer Wilds is that I shouldn't look up anything before playing this game. So I'm like 2 hours into it, I've died a few times, >!so I know about the time loop and all, !<but other than that I have no idea what is going on lol. Is that normal, or am I just a little slow? P.S., how the hell do you land without damaging your ship? I've just been crashing into every planet I can't lie.

Should I pick Monk or Wizard?

I don't really play RPG video games or dungeons and dragons or anything like that, I play , but I thought I'd try it out, you know. Im always playing the same games I gotta mix it up. I've heard you gotta get into the vibe of the character you're playing. So I saw the monk and I thought I could be like ip man from those Chinese movies or Leroy from Tekken (fuck you Leroy you ruined months of Tekken 7). But I could also play Wizard and learn a lot of spells and shit. And that seems pretty cool, I'd be like a master with a different spell for every situation. So now I'm deciding...what's you guys' suggestion? Damn now that I look at the character select screen again I could also be a Cleric man that's so tough. Too many options.

I am looking for a long masterpiece

I have a lot of free time this summer, so I want to play a game that is pretty decently long, and also pretty good. But that's kind of broad, so I'll narrow it down:

  • The game has to have an end. I've played Path of Exile, and dozens of Roguelikes, which are fun, but not what I'm looking for.
  • The game has to good gameplay. I'm fine with turn-based, action, whatever. I like deep, strategical min-maxey turn based stuff, or satisfying action games. I also enjoy a good puzzle game, but thats not really what im looking for atm.
  • A good story is a plus, but not necessary. However, a bad story is inexcusable, ,especially if the dialogue is annoying/frequent. A truly great story/characters can compensate for mediocre gameplay though.
  • The game should be 60 hours of content for one playthrough at least. I think that's a solid definition of "long"
  • Preferably a game that's really fun when you go in blind and discover new things, either story-wise or mechanics wise
  • Some of my favorite games are: Dark Souls 1, Outer Wilds, Armored Core: For answer, Ace Combat, Terraria, Dead Space, Pathologic 2, Hades, XCOM 2, and many more
  • Some games I've played (and liked, but not loved) are Red Dead 2, Cyberpunk 2077, witcher 3, and expedition 33. If I didn't mention these I think you'd probably recommend them.
  • Some games I couldn't finish: God of war 2018, Horizon, last of us (all Playstation games...hmmm.)
  • Some games I'm considering are persona and Final fantasy tactics, and baldurs gate 3 (well, I don't know about baldurs gate 3 because all the gameplay footage i've seen makes the characters look creepy, their eyes are too lifeless lol).

I don't think gaming is for me anymore

I have been playing video games since I was a child. I am a huge fan of the medium, some of the greatest pieces of art ever made are video games. And yet modern releases simply do not excite me anymore, at all. It is very rare for a modern game to even be great, let alone a masterpiece (that's just my opinion, of course. If you enjoy a game, who gives a damn about what I think?). I've identified some core problems with gaming, and I'd love to hear you guys' thoughts on my thoughts.

  • Remakes: The gaming market has been completely oversaturated with low quality remakes. It is very rare that a remake is actually a better experience than the original game. In fact, Resident Evil taught me that I should always play the original instead of playing the remake. RE is one of the franchises that I just never got around to playing, even though I remember hearing a lot about it back in the day. A few years ago, they released the Resident Evil 2 Remake. I decided to buy it, because it looked fun. And you know what, despite it's flaws, its not a bad game. But I went back to play the original maybe a year later, and I was blown away by how much better it was. I could go into detail here, but that may warrant its own separate post. But anyways, I felt scammed by Capcom, because I was tricked into playing a worse version of a game, instead of just paying once for the superior version. Is this Capcom's fault? Not really. Remakes appeal to a wider audience, due to modern graphics and free-aim third person camera. If that makes the majority of consumer happy, it makes Capcom money, so there is no reason for them to cater to me. But it's still something that makes me unhappy, so I wanted to scream into the void about it. Another example would be Silent Hill 2. I should have known not to buy the remake, because the original release is maybe the greatest gaming experience I have played. But my curiosity got the best of me. And it was, once again, worse than the original (although, credit where credit is due, it isn't that much worse. It's an inferior experience, but not an outright terrible one). Don't get me wrong, these remakes actually do improve on some aspects. The graphical fidelity is a plus. The accessibility features are awesome, modern technology is very accommodating for people with disabilities. Silent Hill 2 Remake's motion sickness reduction feature really helped me play the game for longer periods of time. Also, there are even some gameplay improvements. The Police Station in Resident Evil 2 Remake is an incredible section, nearly on par with the same section in the original, with the added bonus of a real Mr. X AI who actually chases you. But these positives just don't outweigh the negatives for me. What makes me more unhappy is that it feels like these games are now seen as the default ways to experience the games. I think games should be more open minded. I'm not going to force any of you to go back and play the originals, but I would urge you to consider it. We want Video Games to be seen as art, right? So why do we act like old games that made intentional artistic decisions are not worthy of our time? Silent Hill 2 and Resident Evil 2 use a fixed camera, which makes the games feel incredibly atmospheric and cinematic. But people don't want to play like that. They want it to feel like every other game they play. There are good remakes though. Sticking to survival horror, the Dead Space remake was incredible, and just as good as the original. In fact, I'd say it's the definitive experience. On a slightly unrelated note, a while back I made a post about how much I loved Dark Souls 1, and I got a lot of comments saying that it was "objectively" worse than modern souls games like Dark Souls 3. How can we as gamers be so dismissive of older titles? There's no such thing as objectivity in art. It seems like we are averse to actually engaging with unique forms of art. But now I'm getting off-topic.
  • Homogenization: Every modern game I play feels derivative. Maybe it's because the medium has existed for so long, that everything has been done. But regardless, games feel more same-y than ever before, which I hate. So many games have RPG elements for no reason, like the new God of War games or the new Assassin's Creed games. Or unnecessary parry mechanics, like the Resident Evil 4 remake (that one was a gift, I wouldn't have bought it myself). Or what about the plethora of Souls knock-offs? I love Dark Souls, but not every game needs a dodge roll. And most soulslike games I have played are hollow shells of the Souls formula. which itself has already been done to death by Fromsoft (still loved Elden Ring though). And how many games have added subpar open worlds? And of course, Last of Us. Last of Us is already a game I don't like. But it was a huge success, and it's method of storytelling and gameplay are everywhere.
  • Bloat: Unnecessary parkour sections, accompaniment sections, and puzzle sections plague games. I think this has always been a problem, but it has become worse over the years. The Spider-Man PS4 game was fun, but all of the side quests were useless garbage made to pad the runtime. I'd rather just play a shorter game without the bloat than a hundred-hour investment where a good chunk of it is boring and repetitive.

So overall, I think I've adequately laid out why I don't like modern games. I've played a few gems in the past few years - Pathologic 2, Elden Ring, Baldur's Gate 3 - but they are rare enough to the point where I don't have any hope for a release until after it comes out and gets rave reviews. And one more thing, this isn't a personal attack to anyone who is in love with modern gaming, I'm just an old man yelling at the clouds.

I bought a monitor, but I'm unsatisfied with it - is there anything I can do to before buying a new one?

I bought an MSI Mag 275f, admittedly without putting much research into it. However, it doesn't look very sharp at all. After doing some research, I think it's because it's a 27 inch monitor with a 1920x1080 display resolution. Apparently that's a very low PPI, which will result in a lack of sharpness (correct me if I'm wrong). Well, I really don't want to have to spend money on a new monitor, is there anything I could do to solve this problem? Maybe changing the aspect ratio?

Steins Gate changed my life

I watched Steins gate and steins gate 0 for the first time recently. Damn bro. That shit was so fucking good. The characters, the emotions, the plot, just everything is peak. I can't believe how well Steins gate 0 ties into steins gate. It's the perfect sequel. And the endings of both shows are incredible. None of my friends have seen this show, so I just need to scream to the void of reddit. Greatest anime OAT, bar none.

SIB Expedition 33 or Nier: Automata?

Looking for a fun game to play this summer. I’m mainly looking for a game with a good amount of content, but also something that’s not 100+ hours. I also want to play a game with a great story, and great gameplay. If there’s also a cast of interesting characters, that’s a plus. I get that these are pretty generic requests….i guess I should mention other games I like. Dark Souls, Resident Evil, and Silent hill are my favorites.

Thinking about buying Rivals 2, but I have some concerns

So, I heard about how well Rivals 2 was doing at EVO, and that kind of got me interested in the game. I also saw that it’s on sale for 15 bucks. So I was thinking of buying it. But when I tried to play melee, I bounced off of it because it was way too hard for me. It felt as hard as learning Tekken was back in the day, but I’m too old for that shit now. Obviously if I’m picking up a new game there’s gonna be some difficulties, but I just wanted to know if this game was as hard as melee, because I’ve heard rivals is a “spiritual successor” to melee.

I still don’t think any soulslike has matched Dark Souls 1

To me, Dark Souls 1 is the perfect game. Yes, I enjoy the second half, outside of BoC. Don’t get me wrong, I love all of the games that come after it too, but none of them match the pure quality of Dark Souls 1. It has the most interesting characters, the deepest story(sorry Bloodborne), the best world design, the best quest design, the best soundtrack, the best atmosphere, etc. But most of all, it’s the most immersive souls game. It genuinely feels like you’re exploring the lost ruins of an ancient kingdom. In a sense, it feels more open world than Elden Ring. And I’ll be the first to admit that some systems can be frustrating to deal with, I’m not a huge fan of weapon durability for example, and I think future games had tighter combat and boss experiences, but at the same time that kind of takes away from the charm of Dark Souls 1. A lot of the bosses in Dark Souls 1 give you the creativity to try your own strategies to beat them, instead of just memorizing the moveset. So yeah, that’s my DS1 glaze post. Greatest game OAT.

Games with “non-intrusive” stories?

I don’t really know how to explain this, but I’ll try my best. A lot of games have stories where it feels like you’re watching the events play out. Think God of War or Last of Us. I usually don’t like those types of games. I like games where it feels like you’re more immersed in the story. A silent protagonist usually helps. For example, I absolutely adore some of the stuff that FromSoftware has done. Their best stories have been Dark Souls 1 and Armored Core 6 thus far (imo). Your decisions impact the world. There aren’t really much cutscenes, but the world feels lived in, if that makes sense. I also like the original dead space (remake is also good, but not what I’m looking for). Another example would be hollow knight, but I wasn’t an huge fan of the platformer gameplay. Another silent protagonist, the horror aspect makes the game immersive. Also challenging gameplay is a bonus.

Can someone tell me the basic playstyle of every character we know about so far?

I’m just curious to know the basics of how every Tokkon character plays. I guess Captain America is like a shoto? And Iron Man might be a zoner. But I don’t know what the other characters do.

Is Tekken 8 worth buying?

I used to play Tekken 7 a lot, but with work and life and stuff I stopped playing fighting games. Recently though, I’ve been super enjoying SF6, and I want to visit other franchises I loved, mainly TeKen. But everything I have heard about Tekken 8 makes it seem like it’s terrible. Whats the state of the game like right now? Is it worth the 40 bucks?

Budget leverless?

I’ve been playing fighting games online for about a year now, on keyboard. I want to start going to local events, but I can’t really bring my keyboard lol. So I was thinking of buying a controller, but then I’d have to relearn everything. But transitioning to a leverless controller seems way easier, and it looks awesome. So if you guys have any suggestions for a leverless controller that’s under 100$, I’d appreciate it.
