Advice requested on when/how to tell work about bladder cancer?

Where I'm at now: Had my first TURBT on Aug 3, graded as HG, Stage 1 at least with invasion into lamina propria. Pathology had no muscle present. I luckily got an appointment with MSK in New York very quick (less than a week) and had my consult yesterday. Doc said to have second TURBT on Aug 25 to nail down what stage it's at. Then I have to wait 1 week for results.

Background for me is I teach in higher ed in NJ. My department has been quite supportive of me but I'm just here on the last year of my 2 year contract, which is a full-time position (not adjuncting). I have quite decent health insurance through work.

I'm super stressed because the semester starts in 2 weeks. I have so many different considerations in mind so I'll just list them below. Any advice, especially in terms of how I should best go about this to protect myself would be helpful since I tend to believe in people and speak sincerely, without thinking of how it can be used against me/work to my detriment.

  1. Is there any drawback/danger to telling my department admin the exact disease I have or is it necessary to keep it vague and just say "serious illness" that requires surgeries and I am awaiting pathology for? My instinct is to just say it's cancer because that conveys how serious the situation is and how I'm not just exaggerating things to get out of work but my partner said I should keep it vague and only be specific with HR (my response is HR is also not to be trusted).
  2. Same question as above but about HR. They have short term disability that I would have to apply for but it's through an external insurance company. Should I apply for that immediately/as soon as I tell my department admin?
  3. I believe NJ state law is that I can't be fired after/because of reporting illness that would result in short term disability (even as a full-time contract worker) but are there any loopholes I'm overlooking that work could use to get rid of me? Obviously I'd be completely screwed if I lost this health insurance.
  4. I genuinely do not want to screw my department or students over, so I want to tell them ASAP in case they have to cancel the classes. The problem is I don't know until 1 week after the surgery in 7 days what exactly my treatment options will be (obviously will be more severe if Stage 2 and would need the whole semester off, or if Stage 1, could likely still teach but may need a week or two on Zoom?) So my plan is to tell them today to give them notice but does anyone have an idea on how to best phrase this given the uncertainty and many possible outcomes?

I think that's all for now but my brain is pretty scattered so more questions may come up. Anything else you can think of to point out to me would be very appreciated. Thank you!

Super stressed. When/how much to share with work about cancer diagnosis?

Okay so background for me is I teach in higher ed in NJ. My department has been quite supportive of me but I'm just here on the last year of my 2 year contract, which is a full-time position (not adjuncting). I have quite decent health insurance through work.

My mom passed away earlier this year from cancer and my department was very supportive of me needing time off and cancelling some engagements. Now I've just been diagnosed with cancer and about to have a second surgery next week to nail down what stage it's at.

I'm super stressed because the semester starts in 2 weeks. I have so many different considerations in mind so I'll just list them below. Money plant dying, how to transplant?

Hi everyone, please be nice! I know it looks very sickly and I am far from an expert. I grew this plant from a small cutting that I took as a keepsake from a loved one who died suddenly in 2023. Thanks to everyone's help here years ago, I learned how to propagate it from a cutting into this beautiful big plant years later.

Typically, when I'm out town for a while I ask someone to take care of it and it has usually thrived even more under their care lol (I'm no green thumb sadly).

Most recently, I had to be out of town for a month because my mom passed. It was a crazy time and I didn't have a chance to get anyone to take care of the plant, so that seems to be the main reason why the main plant is on its way out.

Key detail: the very middle of the plant seems mushy and can't support its weight. I thought this was an issue with the roots outgrowing the smaller pot so I replanted it in a bigger one but when I pulled the plant out of the old pot, there was no root ball... it was like there were no roots at all 😭

So I really want to save this plant because it is one of the last keepsakes from my ex who passed. I've already transplanted a smaller cutting from the base of this plant (and there's newer sprouts at the bottom again) but is it possible to save this one? All the bottom leaves are dead/dying but the new ones that are growing seem relatively healthy?

Can I just cut the trunk in half and replant the upper half? I read that I need to cut carefully to where there's a node that can form a root. Any more specific directions would be much appreciated.

Details

- Light: strong indirect sunlight all day long.

- Water: I poke my finger in to see if the soil is most and water based on that. Have read that money plants are not super finicky with watering.

TIA all!

I'm confused, why can't I find any second hand Dreamstations online?

So I've struggled with my Dreamstation for YEARS. Like I started using this machine in 2020 and my average time keeping it on at night was like 3-4 hours. I was very lucky if I had it on for like 6 hours, and even after I woke up I still felt like crap.

Why did I let it go on so long? I have no idea. But anyway, I finally have good insurance and I was so sick of the machine that I went to an ENT who referred me to a dental surgeon who specializes in those mouthpieces.

One in-lab sleep test I did around 2020 said that I had central + obstructive and a bit more central (which is why I have the Dreamstation) so I figured a mouthpiece would never work for me.

Lo and behold, I started using it this week finally and it has really changed my life. Like I am finally waking up and feeling not like I'm under a huge pile of wet sandbags. I'm actually excited to go to sleep nowadays, and not have to wake up at 2am to take off the mask/struggle to keep it on and fall back asleep again, etc.

ANYWAY that's all to say: not poo-pooing anyone who had their lives changed by their apnea machine, it just wasn't for me and I'm so glad I found my solution.

tl;dr I have found a mouthpiece that works for me so I don't need my Dreamstation anymore. I want to post my Dreamstation somewhere but I noticed there aren't any on Amazon or eBay or anywhere. Did I miss something? Are you not supposed to resell these?

Very specific shortcut request: Possible to create one on iOS that I can just tap to switch between 2 set timezones?

I saw there was an Automator macro and I forgot to bookmark the page and then I got too lazy because it seemed like a lot more work.

Is there some way to accomplish that with a Shortcut instead? Thanks

Pathology results back: having a bit of a meltdown

Hi all, 40M. Did scope in July and uro saw papillary tumor, he visually assessed as low-grade. TURBT #1 on Aug 3. Just got pathology back today (and can't see uro until Aug 27 since he's on vacation) so I'm obviously doing a bit of freaking out on my own since I can't get uro interpretation of results. So it came back as:

>High grade papillary urothelial carcinoma showing necrosis and invasion of lamina propria. AJCC Stage: at least pT1.
EDIT: I forgot to include that it says no Muscularis Propria was present

(the at least is really freaking me out. What if it turns out to be T2/3?)

My understanding is this is much more serious than I thought. The quirk of this urologist was that he didn't do any chemical treatments with the first TURBT because he said I had no official diagnosis yet (which I have now).

He also said I shouldn't see an oncologist at that point (again no official diagnosis) but I was free to consult one but they would be confused since it was confined to the bladder (what he said a few weeks ago, but presumably now). My medical researcher sister said I should find an oncologist immediately which I'm doing at this moment. She also says I should see an oncologist before I even have the followup with the uro on Aug 27.

My mind is kinda swirling I guess. I guess any thoughts/feedback? Questions:

  1. Should I just tell this uro I don't like this way of treatment and find someone else? I've heard numerous feedback from folks here that his decisions seem way out of line with what they've experienced. He's an MD who specializes in urological surgery but obviously not an oncologist.
  2. I can go to NY or LA to see an oncologist but currently located in NJ.
  3. Should I still get a second opinion on this? I can submit to the JHU online one (thanks to hikerguy for recommending) but it would be all out of pocket since my insurance isn't covering that.
  4. Am I totally screwed because my uro didn't do any chemical treatment after TURBT #1? Like all the microscopic/remnant cells could be spreading to other parts of my body now.
  5. Waiting until Aug 27 is really stressing me out... is it "a big deal" to wait. Part of me thinks like what's 2 weeks difference going to make in terms of a tumor? But the other part of me is like OF COURSE 2 WEEKS IS A BIG DEAL.
  6. Given this pathology result, I should be pushing for the chemo wash, right?
  7. Am I doomed?

EDIT: Thank you everyone for the kind words and support and advice. I have an appointment on Monday at MSK! I feel lucky to have squeezed in so fast. Hopefully they get me on some treatment ASAP...

Anyone else's match also lagging af tonight?

Probably a dumb question to ask since the answer is always yes but it feels particularly bad tonight. I'm getting like 2 second freezing when I hit charge move and of course by the time it catches up, there's a brand new opponent pokemon in front of me.

I'm a few matches from finishing all the research and getting my CTM and now I'm just gonna put the phone down. So frustrating.

Why are some mons so unforgiving with their IV spreads?

I've been hunting for a good GL shadow Drowzee/Hypno for literal years at this point. And you know how it goes, you can usually eyeball when a mon is gonna be high rank (either has 0 atk and high def/HP or has the classic like 1/15/11 type "shape") and it typically kinda bears out.

But every single time I catch a Drowzee with either of those IV patterns, it ends up at some horrendous <1500 CP (like 1483 or something) or if it has a good CP then is just super low rank. Other mons, though, you can have these general IV patterns and they tend to be high rank (like I feel like Talon is super forgiving).

So what's the deal? I'm not a math person so it just how the mon's base stats interact with the IV/CP formulae in pogo?

What are the highest protein Chinese veges?

Got diagnosed with cancer at 40yo, want to try to cut out as much red meat (especially) but other types of animal meat in general so trying to figure out what are the best Chinese veges with high protein content.

Sadly most lists out there are all about western veges and its just beans beans beans (most of which I find either very boring or do not like eating). I also would love to avoid just eating nonstop gluten and/or soy but I know that's a tall ask.

Are there any Chinese leafy greens that are high in protein similar to Western spinach and broccoli?

Is it normal to see what looks like papillary tumor pieces in my pee the same week as a TURBT?

Sorry for the graphic description and multiple posts, I did a search and most people were talking about either blood clots or blood itself in their pee after a TURBT, which isn't really what I'm seeing.

So I have a papillary tumor, visually assessed as low grade (no pathology report yet). Did the TURBT this past Monday and had quite a bit of blood in the first few days, then pinkish, then finally cleared up about Friday (ie. light yellow pee).

But yesterday and today, when I look in the toilet after I'm done, I see what looks like little clear/white shreds or filaments with flecks of blood in it. Which looks a lot like the papillary tumor pieces itself when the uro showed me the tumor during the cytoscopy.

It's kinda freaking me out. They're definitely not blood clots since it's not like solid chunks of red or anything. They look like shreds of stuff with some reddening in it.

Does anyone know what this is? Is it normal? Just leftover pieces of fulgurated bladder tissue?

I do still have a little bit of pain while peeing... not so much painful but a weird/noticeable sensation that I never had pre-TURBT/scope.

I do not like Skeledirge

Skeledirge:

  • is bulky is spammy
  • has the best fast move in the game
  • has one of the best nukes in the game that is STAB
  • has a legacy self-buffing move that is cheap, STAB, and does 84 damage all on its own.

It's somehow rank 94 in UL (I also hate skele in GL) yet it is on every single team I have fought tonight. I am now being forced to run 3x counters to skeledirge. EFF THIS CROC.

Update: Switched to s. fera lead, jelli and s.zapdos with ancient power for fun and a shadow ball from skeledirge just did THREE QUARTERS of my health on my rank 1 UL jellicent. Like seriously what the actual f*ck.

Has anyone ever been able to solve this iPhone Backup Encryption issue?

tl;dr: iPhone backup says encryption password is incorrect even though I'm 99% sure I have the correct one

Okay so back in 2024 I did a full iPhone backup and stupidly checked the option to encrypt it. I entered a password and pressed entered, everything seemed fine.

I wiped my phone since I was traveling and then when I came home, I tried to restore the backup.

The password (that I'm 99% sure I used since I created a new one and practiced it just for this specific purpose) kept returning as wrong.

So I tried every single combination of capital/small/possible typo I could imagine (like 50 different variations), all wrong. Some people claim that despite encryption asking you to create a password, the actual password to unlock the back up is your iCloud password, the admin password on your Mac, etc. Tried all these and non worked.

So now I've had this "lost" backup on a USB for the past 2.5 years unable to access the important photos I have on there.

I've read every single Apple help thread on the Apple Support forum, on reddit, stackexchange, etc. and dozens of people have had this same problem and no solution has ever been found. Why MacOS would ask you to create a brand new password, not have a "show password" option so you can verify what you typed, and not have a verify field where you have to type the password again to make sure you typed what you actually wanted is beyond me.

Anyway, I gave up at the time because life got too busy but I still have this backup and I still want to recover my really important photos on there.

So my question: has anyone actually solved this issue? Thanks!

Is a second opinion consult always in person?

Hi all,

Had my first TURBT this past Monday and finally feel like I'm over the hump (peeing not painful and no more pink in the pee).

My doctor was nice enough to schedule me for the TURBT before he went on vacation but now I have to wait 2 weeks until he gets back to see him about the pathology results (which aren't out yet)

The office did say they're gonna post the pathology results online before he gets back though. I wanted to get a second opinion from JHU but they said I have to attend in person.

I'm located in NJ and for some reason there aren't any (reasonable) direct flights out to Baltimore so I'd have to go to a nearby airport and drive, etc. Sounds like a huge hassle.

So I guess my main question is: are there any places that do a second opinion out-patient consult over Zoom without requiring you go there in person? If so, I'd love to hear!

Secondary questions that you can feel free to ignore:

- I read on BCAN that they advise no strenuous activity for 3-4 weeks after a TURBT. I was just starting to regain momentum on my 2x a week gym attendance before my diagnosis and I would hate to fall off again. Is it really not a good idea to go to the gym like... 1-2 weeks after the TURBT? Not sure if that advice is geared towards 60yo+ folks, I'm 40yo.

- NSFW: I also read on BCAN that you should refrain from sexual intercourse for 1-2 weeks after TURBT. Just wondering what people's experiences with that has been (and does that include any kind of sexual activity, eg. errr self-pleasure?)

Los Angeles education professionals: Is "ed. tech" still a thing?

I'm in secondary and higher education (and currently job searching) and I remember in the past 5 years "ed. tech" was the hot buzzword everywhere in educational spaces. Makes sense given the pandemic making us all go virtual, etc.

But I haven't heard much about it in the past little bit, which I'm surprised about given how, despite a shift back to in-person, Zoom has become a staple of our lives and now the same is happening with AI too (blech).

Anyone know what the ed. tech landscape is like in LA? Have they all fled the city like the film industry? Or is it a growing field still (and possibly still hiring)? I have lots of experience with e-learning and online teaching and am super interested in exploring more and getting established in the field. Would love to chat, if you're in the know!

Working my way through the game and I've been bummed out by the lack of armor/accessories/materia in each new area/town

Okay so I really loved Remake and have been loving Rebirth so far. I'm just about to do the parade march in Junon.

But every new area I get to, I excitedly go to the weapons, accessories, and materia stores and.... it's always the same stuff? EDIT: I should add the most disappointing thing for me is no new Weapons. I'm in the like 3.5th region of the game and I'm still using the second sword that I got? BORING. Can we craft weapons at some point?

What's the deal? I get that we can craft upgraded versions of things we already have but in the original, once you entered a new area or town, there were always exciting new things to buy.

Now it's like every single shop I go to, it's the same old thing and it's usually "sold out" (somehow even more boring?)

I feel like they were a bit better with this in Remake (and tbh wish they kept a bunch of dynamics/UI features they had in Rebirth. Really not a fan of the weird Weapon Upgrade system in Rebirth. Why is forming parties inexplicably in Combat Settings instead of the "Party" section?! Why did they make taking photos so confusing? etc. etc. I'm just at a loss for all the weird UI stuff they changed this time).

Otherwise I'm loving the game and have been 100% each region before moving onto the next.

Has anyone attempted (or completed) a US coast to coast drive in an eGolf?

I can't even imagine how long it would take. It took me 10 hours to go from San Jose to LA (a trip that might normally take like 6 hours in an ICE car), so I imagine it would take like... 2+ weeks or something.

I'm planning a move from the east coast to west coast in one year's time and my eGolf has been shipped all over the country already. Kinda morbidly curious if anyone has attempted to coast to coast trip.
