Bio

Julian is looking for a patient adopter who can help him settle in at his own pace. The shelter has been a scary place for him, and he has been observed feeling overwhelmed in his kennel while preferring the comfort of his bed. With time, patience, and gentle encouragement, Julian may begin to build confidence as he adjusts to a new environment. He is waiting for someone willing to give him the chance to decompress and show his personality in a quieter setting.

Due to capacity at the shelter, this pet is currently at risk for euthanasia. We are urgently seeking placement through adoption, foster, or approved rescue.

If you are interested in adopting, fostering, or rescuing this dog, please email dasadopt@dallas.gov as soon as possible. When emailing, be sure to include a callback phone number so our team can contact you promptly.

Cooper urgently needs a foster 🚨‼️

Rescue Only - SPACE - Needs Placement by 7/7 11am

Cooper A1285945

5 years old

Intact male

27 pounds

Heartworm Negative

Owner surrender for behavior on 4/29, foster return on 7/1 for behavior

Meet Cooper, a sweet and absolutely adorable dog who is looking for a patient, experienced owner to help him navigate the world. Outside of his struggles, Cooper is pure joy—he loves to prance around with the zoomies, soak up affection, and act as the ultimate napping buddy. He is an easygoing companion at heart who ultimately just wants to love and be loved in return.

Because Cooper is a sensitive boy with some behavioral challenges, he needs a dedicated home who can provide structure and guidance. He has shown some unpredictable triggers in the past that have led to nipping, so he requires a home committed to ongoing training and patience. With the right experienced owner to help him manage his triggers, Cooper’s affectionate, goofy personality will truly be able to shine.

Due to behavioral history Cooper is only available for placement with an approved rescue partner.

Foster notes

In the past two weeks while I’ve had him, we’ve unfortunately had a few incidents where he attacks unprovoked. Without warning, he lunges, snarls, scratches and bites. His bites are never hard, more like a warning bite and release, but the attack itself is an entire scene where he is distressed.

I love Cooper and he is such a sweet dog, but I cannot identify what is triggering him enough to try to train him on my own or without extensive help. I unfortunately am not capable of dedicating so much time mentally and physically to helping him unlearn this behavior.

Before I list his incidents, note that there have been plenty of times he’s been around males / getting pet with no issues. Both with a volunteer on a daycation and with me in the beginning.

Here are his incidents:

6/17 - I took him to get his nails trimmed and he was declined by two places for being too aggressive. They tried a muzzle, etc. and said they can’t clip his nails. I figured this was normal and I didn’t know what the aggression entailed, it was just my first time being told he was aggressive and I couldn’t believe it.

6/21 - attempted to attack my dad and bit my moms leg. After spending the whole day with me and my family, showing no signs of aggression towards my parents and cuddling with them on the couch, my dad extended his hand to cooper and cooper tried going after him. He went back to sniff my dad a few moments later with my mom next to him, and my mom started to extend her hand and he bit her leg. I thought maybe he didn’t like the hand extension.

6/25 - Dogs are welcome in my office and I had brought cooper to my workplace a few times already on days I work two jobs back to back, but this time my manager (male) was there. We tried a slow introduction where cooper seemed fine at first, then out of no where would lunge and bite my manager. This happened a few times even with him sitting on the ground, tossing treats. At one point he moved in his chair avoiding Cooper and he tried to attack him again. This is when I started to think he had a resource guarding issue with me towards males and that is what caused it.

6/27 - A lady near my apartment complex met cooper on a walk the night before and was interested in adopting him, but her son was home from college staying with her. I met her outside, gave her the leash and some treats so she could be the one to introduce cooper to her son with me out of the picture. She took him to neutral territory outside, let cooper sniff her son, and had him toss treats out. She gave him the leash and cooper started to attack her son. I wasn’t there so I don’t know the full picture, but I’m sure it was the same situation as I’d seen before.

6/27 - Adoption event. I was hesitant to bring him, but a familiar volunteer was going to be there with me and she had positive experiences with cooper, so we wanted to give it a shot. He did fine with males, females and kids at first, we told everyone to take it slow with him. There was one guy that was crouched down, cooper loved him and was wagging his tail, accepting pets, and trying to get treats out of his bag. The guy got the treats out, gave cooper a few, and out of nowhere cooper had the same demeanor shift where he completely gets out of character, zero’s in on the person, and lunges to attack. He bit the guys hand - same thing where he bites and releases, so it’s not hard, but he was snarling and definitely trying to get after him. Right after this a kid ran by (yes, ran) and stopped, started to walk towards cooper (as we told him NO - stay back) and cooper attempted to lunge at him since he was already provoked. Thankfully the kid was far enough back. This was a kid he also had already met and got pets from too. We left immediately, let cooper decompress outside for 10-15 minutes or so, and took him back to my car. We put him in my car with the door open and chatted outside for a few minutes. Jen reached in to say bye to cooper, and cooper sprung towards her snarling and trying to attack again. He didn’t do anything to her either, but it was very random as he knows Jen already.

6/30 - Yesterday, Cooper attacked me in my living room. We have had zero issues with resource guarding when it comes to food, so I don’t know if that is it. He has a chewy that I’ve taken from him, handed him, been next to him while he has it, etc. many times. He was on my couch with it and I was standing next to him - my legs by his head. I saw a piece of dirt on my couch a couple feet in front of cooper that I was inspecting, I bent over to touch it and see what it was, and cooper suddenly had that shift and went after my leg. I have a long scratch that bled, and he bit my upper thigh/hip and hand. I had to yell and fight him off for about 5 seconds, he continued to try to come after me until I completely backed away 5-10 feet from my living room.

Since this happened, I am genuinely afraid he is more likely to attack me again. I love Cooper, he is such a sweet dog, and sadly people failed him in the past by traumatizing him to behave this way.

Owner notes

4/29: Owner adopted from another shelter earlier in the day. Was playing/petting dog and got bitten.

Meet Lobo, a sweet senior dog who needs help now.

Lobo is currently in very poor condition. On examination, he was found to be extremely weak and lethargic. He is walking with an ataxic (unsteady) gait in his hind end and has significant muscle atrophy in both rear legs and hip area. He is also showing proprioceptive deficits in both rear legs, meaning he is having difficulty knowing where his feet are positioned.

Medical findings include degenerative disc disease, canine infectious respiratory disease (CIRD), and bilateral lenticular sclerosis. Neoplasia (cancer) cannot be ruled out at this time and remains a concern pending further diagnostics.

Today, Lobo has declined even further. He is not eating, is lying on his side in his kennel, and does not want to get up. He appears exhausted, uncomfortable, and in need of immediate support and medical attention.

This pet is at risk for euthanasia due to the level of medical care required, which exceeds what we can provide in the shelter. If you are interested in helping, please email dasadopt@dallas.gov with your contact information so we can call you back.

Medical

6/24: Patient was observed today alert and responsive during kennel side examination.

There was evidence of coughing/sneezing and slightly Mucoid purulent nasal discharge in left/right/both nares. We have started our standard protocol for CIRDC (Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex) with Doxycycline. This antibiotic therapy is intended to help prevent secondary infections and support the pet’s health while the pet naturally resolves CIRD, with a normal treatment length of 5-7 days. Medical will continue to monitor the patient to ensure symptoms are resolving, if not there could be a change in antibiotics prescribed by the veterinarian.

Rx: Doxycycline 100mg (10mg/kg) once daily for 10 days

Very weak and lethargic on exam. Walks with ataxic gait in hindquarters. Muscle atrophy noted in both rear legs and hip area. Proprioception deficits noted in both rear legs. Bilateral lenticular sclerosis. Also not eating today and just laying on his side in kennel and not wanting to get up. Heart and lungs normal.

DX: Chemistry Profile/CBC=Elevated T. Protein and Globulin on chemistries. Unable to obtain a good CBC reading. CBC indicating hemoconcentration 68.2%; elevated wbc 20.6; neutrophilia 18.49 and low platelets 85 (no clotting noted).

DX: Xray (RL & VD View Lumbar spine and pelvis)=Spondylosis noted at L2-L3 and Sacrum. Also noted localized area of pulmonary infiltrates in the caudal right lung lobe (neoplasia vs infection).

A: Degenerative disc disease; CIRD; rule out neoplasia

P: TX: Fluids LRS 1000mls SQ

TX: Carprofen (50mg/ml) 2.4cc SQ

TX: Enrofloxacin (100mg/ml) 2.8cc SQ

TX: Clindamycin (150mg/ml) 2cc SQ

Needs to go to rescue today for further workup and treatment. Not eating and not wanting to get up and move around. Condition deteriorating here in shelter.

Bio

Meet Garp, a calm and laid-back guy who seems to enjoy a more relaxed pace. From our volunteer observations, he walks well on leash and appears tolerant of other dogs, though he tends to keep to himself while wandering the yard. Garp seems to prefer a quieter environment where he can take his time warming up to new people and situations. Contact us about Garp today!
