Despite the stress of the shelter, Herc has shown what a sweet soul he is. He walked nicely on leash and happily climbed onto a bench just to soak up gentle pets and attention. Once he’d had his fill of cuddles, he quietly explored the yard—like he was searching for a way to finally leave shelter life behind.
This big teddy bear doesn’t need much… just a safe place to land and someone willing to believe in him. ❤️

I love, loved you
I started this letter several times and I finally was able to record my feelings on this page, but someone called me and the words disappeared now I need to start it from scratch.
I wasn’t sure whether to write I love you or I loved you or combination of both. I don’t think it really matters because I don’t believe you love me. There’s no reason for you to and I doubt you would ever love me. I don’t feel that I’m any person you would ever love and I’d be a fool to consider otherwise. In any event, I know what I feel about you, but I do believe I will need to forget about it sooner or later. I don’t want to, but for my own sanity, I must forget you and avoid any reminders and that my enigma will be difficult. I really don’t know who you are. I know what you are in my heart. I know what you are in my head. I know what my eyes have seen, but you don’t know who I am either or do you I don’t even know why I’m writing this letter. I believe I should stop right now.
You are indeed the most beautiful person I have never met. And I think that’s what happened. I fell in love with images of you. I don’t know what the real you was like. It was a capricious meeting serendipitous perhaps, we never met personally just through a misadventure something that should not have happened. The damage is done you don’t belong to me. You never will and that’s for the best. Not knowing you and not having you causes a different pain.
In this case I can only imagine the rejection I don’t have to fully live it since I’m not going to ever meet you or talk to you really there’s no danger of that rejection becoming reality so I stay away and I stay invisible and I stay an admirer and not an intruder in your life. At least I hope not. My goal was never to hurt you. My goal was to love you at least the you I thought I was loving, but I don’t want to say much more.

6/18/2026: Approached with a tense body, ears back, and raised hackles. Flinched during leash placement and looked back with whale eyes while being walked. Pulled back on the leash and kept her tail tucked.
6/20/2026: Quiet in kennel with a tense body, pinned ears, and tucked tail. Initially pancaked on her bed but gradually approached after gentle baby talk and treats. Relaxed enough to accept petting and spent several minutes enjoying affection.
6/21/2026: Found lying flat on her bed with dilated eyes and a tense body. Allowed leashing but refused to walk and trembled despite gentle encouragement. Staff elected not to force movement and allowed her to remain comfortably in her kennel.
6/22/2026: Lying on her bed with a tense body, ears back, and tucked tail. Slowly accepted a leash and walked out of her kennel on a loose leash. Waited calmly in front of the kennel door and walked back without her tail tucked. After spending time in the office, she relaxed significantly, wagged her tail, explored her surroundings, and sought comfort from staff.

6/17/2026: Weighed 65.0 lbs. Exam noted generalized hair thinning and dermatitis. Flea allergy suspected. Vaccinated (Rabies, DA2PP-V, Bordetella), dewormed, and tested Heartworm Negative.

5/19: Medium Energy, Good Manners, Good on Leash, Gives big hugs, Social (People), Warms Up, Love-Bug, Wants to Cuddle/Sniff, Solicits Pets. Maple is a mature, sweet, and cheerful gal. When she feels a little anxious (loud sounds, going into her kennel, etc), she will gently jump up and hug your waist. She pranced around the play yard for quite a while, then spent the remainder of our time sitting quietly by my side.
