Collecting roof rail dimensions for my 3D printable project

I have a Honda Odyssey and designed a 3D printable bracket to hold mounting hardware in place for custom crossbars (or anything that can mount with bolts). It's made from TPU and acts as a small amount of cushion between metal parts while also stabilizing the bolts. There's also a cage for square 20x20mm T nuts that goes into my particular crossbars, an Amazon Basics cheapie set.

Now I want to make versions for different vehicles. I've had a Cherokee and WJ in the past but of course never thought to measure anything.

Please post your vehicle, year or generation, and the rail width and height. I prefer metric but imperial is OK.

A sketch or picturing showing the profile would be great but it's difficult to design something that fits exactly. It took me 6 or 7 tries to get an exact match for my Odyssey. So the universal ones will probably just be a simple rectangular opening for now.

My 4th gen 2014 Honda Odyssey rails are 49mm wide and 30mm high

This is my Makerworld page for the bracket. Currently just has the Odyssey version https://makerworld.com/en/models/3169853-roof-rack-crossbar-adapter-for-4th-gen-odyssey

How to set exactly 100% volume?

I started using VLC again after using MPC-BE for a decade, because VLC plays newer audio formats correctly. One issue I'm running into is I usually want the volume at 100% so the player isn't altering the audio before playback, but I often change it accidentally by turning my mouse wheel. I don't want to set the max to 100% because sometimes I do need a boost. Is there a trick to just set 100% with no alteration?

My custom roof rack mounts for Honda Odyssey

A couple months ago I bought Amazon Basics 56 inch roof rack crossbars but wasn't satisfied with how they mounted. The brackets are huge and wobbly so I didn't really trust them. I decided to set up custom low profile mounts. After some trial and error I ended up with 20x20mm T nuts with M6 threads, 45mm M6 bolts, and stainless steel mending plates.

I then designed these pieces to act as fairings and internal T nut carriers to make the whole setup look better and provide some padding. It makes installation easier by holding the hardware in place, and then keeps everything parallel. I went through 9 versions before I was happy.

The biggest challenge was the clearance. 45mm is the only bolt length that works and clearance is extremely limited on the inner side. I had to make my own super low profile circular wrench to screw them in!

The design is specific to the rail profile of the 4th gen Odyssey but might work with other Hondas. I'm considering making custom ones for other vehicles but it takes testing to get the fit right.

How do you get a staff job at UT?

I've always wanted to work at UT. OK, not always, probably since I graduated in 2006. I came close around 2018, had a couple interviews for a GIS job with the facilities office but barely lost out to another candidate. At the time I was working at Texas Highway Patrol. Since then I worked at Maui County Planning Department, then spent a few years at University of Hawai'i.

I'm in Lakeway and partially unemployed, partially working in conservation for a Hawai'i nonprofit, so I'm applying for UT jobs again, but haven't even heard back about any of the positions. They're all almost identical to my UH work-- GIS and data analysis for water and environmental issues. Some of these jobs never closed, they've just been open for a year or more.

What's the trick? How do you get your foot in the door? I kind of assumed being an alumnus and having worked in academia for years would get me interviews!

Why is capitalism vs socialism in public discourse so asymmetrical?

America and every other developed country has a mix of capitalism, socialism, and free enterprise-- This is following the broad definitions where capitalism is about finance and capital, socialism is about government-owned and run services, and free enterprise is everyday business and trade.

Yet it's common for Americans and Europeans to call themselves "capitalist" even if they don't have any connection to capital. OK, let's accept the use of the term "capitalism" to mean all business, trade, etc. Who is actually a pure capitalist? We all participate in business and trade, but we also use public services like roads, police, fire, public schools, airports, etc. We all pay for Social Security and benefit from it when we retire.

The other side of the coin is that socialists often describe themselves as "anticapitalist" BUT they're using the actual definition of capitalism, rather than being against business and trade. In general, socialists aren't even against the existence of capitalism and don't advocate for pure socialist systems, but rather regulations on capitalism and business + stronger socialist systems. Their belief system is consistent.

So why isn't the other side consistent? Why are so many self-described capitalists vehemently against socialism while also liking almost every socialist system we have?

If anyone needs a specific example: Defund the police. It was a major political issue for conservative leaning Americans in 2020, 2022, and 2024. If our socialist police agencies were totally defunded, the free market would still exist and capitalism would surely create better policing, if the ideology is to be believed. Yet maintaining a socialist system was one of the top issues for folks who almost universally consider themselves to be capitalists.

My 3D printable side window mount for Viofo A119 Mini 2 (and similar cams)

I wanted to mount a couple of A119 Mini 2 cameras to the side glass on my minivan. I guess this design has been in the works for half a year. The original design was much thinner and I printed it in PETG. It was fine until the temperatures here in Texas hit 105F (40C) and it finally warped on the side that usually faces the sun.

I redesigned much thicker and printed in high speed TPU filament. TPU can handle much higher temperatures but isn't as toxic to print like ABS and nylon. I was worried Gorilla double sided tape wouldn't stick to TPU but it seems pretty solid and has been exposed to the sun for a day. So far so good!

Makerworld link to download: https://makerworld.com/en/models/3148447-side-window-dashcam-mount-for-viofo-a119-mini-2

EDIT: Forgot to mention, the circular dish shape where the camera mounts is so a blob of silicone adhesive can be put in to make sure the dashcam doesn't fall off. And the small holes on the glass side are to help the double sided tape "grab" and minimize bubbles

Two former party chairs

We just saw a former RNC chair, Michael Steele, interview a former DNC chair, Ben Wikler. MSNOW is perceived by non-viewers as a liberal network. But I think it's more accurate to say that it's biased toward facts, and facts tend to have a liberal bias like the famous saying goes. You could also say MSNOW is biased toward normalcy, and two party chairs laughing together was normal in America.

Ari Melber substitute is doing great

I can't think of this guy's name even though he's been a correspondent for a long time. He seems to genuinely enjoy hosting and is a natural. There's no hint of awkwardness which is rare for the up and coming hosts.

Will we ever be able to pull electricity from utility poles?

This picture reminded me of something I've been wondering for years. Electric poles in rust have wires hanging down from them, and they look like you should be able to draw electricity from them. I've always assumed this was meant to be a feature. Is there or has there ever been a plan to let players get electricity from the in-game infrastructure?

Solar panel minivan roof mounts

I decided to mount a 100W solar panel to my Honda Odyssey roof to keep the battery charged when it's parked for a few days or weeks. I got neodymium rubberized magnets and M6 hardware but wanted to cushion the mount points and reduce airflow under the front edge so I designed these pucks and fairings. Originally I had a sloped fairing design but switched to the simpler dual magnet one to reinforce the front. I figure even if the edge lifts, there's a backup pair of magnets holding it. The little triangular holes are so water doesn't collect. All the printed parts are Overture low speed (old version) TPU which I've found to be extremely strong and can hold up to sunlight and heat.

My 3D printed low profile aerodynamic roof rack pads

I designed and 3D printed these roof rack pads for my SUP. I've had this idea for years but only started doing 3D design and printing last year. I always hated the foam pads, they're bulky, ugly, and age quickly from sunlight and heat. These slide into a standard T slot and are in 50mm segments. Printing took forever because TPU needs a much lower flow rate than PETG and PLA.

I converted my R11 to an AIO

Since glass doors became common on cases I've wanted to mount a little screen inside of one. I posted a while back about my R11 case swap to the Qube 540 so I won't repeat all that. Basically I designed and 3D printed adapters for the USB ports, switches, etc. Now I've mounted a generic 15 inch 3240x2160 screen with 3D printed brackets stuck to the glass with Gorilla double sided tape. The screen is powered by a USB power adapter plugged into one of the SATA power cables. A short HDMI cable goes out of a gap and into the graphics card. It works perfectly for things like recording public meetings and photogrammetry, IE tasks where a big screen isn't needed

DJI Fly has been horrible for past year

The DJI Fly app and OS have been horrible for at least the past year on my RC2. It freezes often, sometimes is laggy, and regularly loses the tracklog which I need because I'm taking pictures for photogrammetry. Is there any secret custom firmware or any method to solve this? I found a thread on downgrading firmware but the info seems to be outdated and the old software is no longer available: https://www.reddit.com/r/dji/comments/1r1v2mk/feb_2026_dji_fly_update_v1195_rc_2_possible/

Ayman Mohyeldin is a good fit for The 11th Hour

Someone posted here recently that Stephanie Ruhle gave the show a "late night feel" and I think that was true. Velshi's style is more suited for a daytime show. Ayman + 11th Hour Staff have the right mix of newsiness, covering stories that other shows didn't take up, and jovial guest interactions! If it were up to me, Morning Joe would get cut down (why is it so long?), Ali Velshi would get an hour or two in the morning, and Ayman Mohyeldin would get 11th Hour. Heck, he can co-host or alternate with Catherine Rampell who also did a great job last week.
