What Hong Kong’s protests taught the world about preparation. The 2019 Hong Kong protests became known for their organization, adaptability, and emphasis on protecting one another. Some of the widely documented tactics included:

• “Be Water.” Stay flexible, avoid being boxed in, and adapt quickly to changing situations.

• Leaderless organization. Decentralized coordination allowed the movement to continue even when individual organizers were arrested.

• Protective gear. Many protesters wore helmets, goggles, gloves, and sturdy clothing to reduce the risk of injury.

• Umbrellas as protection. Umbrellas became an iconic symbol, used to provide cover from cameras, rain, and to create visual barriers.

• The “cone tactic.” Traffic cones were sometimes placed over deployed tear gas canisters before they were extinguished, becoming one of the protest’s most recognizable symbols of collective action.

• Water bottles and teamwork. Volunteers were often seen using water to help cool or extinguish tear gas canisters while others assisted with cones or helped keep people away from the area.

• Street medics. Volunteer first-aid teams treated injuries and helped people affected by crowd-control measures.

• Supply chains. Communities passed along water, first-aid supplies, food, helmets, and other essentials through coordinated volunteer networks.

• Real-time communication. Protesters relied on encrypted messaging platforms and live updates to share information about road closures, medical assistance, and changing conditions.

• Buddy system. People looked after one another, attended in groups, and ensured everyone got home safely. The lasting lesson from Hong Kong wasn’t just resistance. It was preparation, mutual aid, adaptability, and community coordination under pressure. And don’t forget why you’re there. Stay focused on the cause, not the confrontation. Protect yourself, don’t retaliate, and don’t let provocation distract from the demand for accountability.

Good news: Costa Rica brought its forests back 🌱

Costa Rica became the first tropical country to successfully reverse deforestation. After losing much of its forest cover to farming and cattle ranching, the country changed course through conservation efforts, protected areas, and programmes that encouraged landowners to protect forests.

Today, forests cover around 60% of Costa Rica again, turning a story of environmental destruction into one of the world’s most inspiring conservation successes.

A reminder that when nature is given a chance, it can recover.

Insufficient portable toilet access in the exact years the outbreaks occurred. Regulators knew. The industry knew.

Between 2017 and 2019, five separate E. coli outbreaks linked to romaine lettuce sickened over 500 Americans across 36 states, killed five, and put dozens into kidney failure severe enough to require dialysis. The CDC told the entire country to throw away all romaine regardless of origin. The cause was not a mystery. It was a toilet.

Farmworkers picking lettuce by hand across vast commercial fields in triple-digit Arizona and California heat had inadequate or no access to portable toilets. Piece-rate pay structures meant stopping to relieve yourself cost money workers could not afford to lose. Human waste entered the soil. It entered the irrigation water. It entered the food supply. The FDA's own environmental assessments acknowledged inadequate field sanitation as a contributing risk factor. California labor inspectors had cited large lettuce operations for insufficient portable toilet access in the exact years the outbreaks occurred. Regulators knew. The industry knew.

The pattern predates the romaine crisis by decades. The 2006 spinach outbreak killed three people and sickened 200 across 26 states under identical conditions in Monterey County, California. The 1996 Cyclospora outbreak in Guatemalan strawberries and raspberries was linked directly to fields with no bathroom facilities whatsoever. Every outbreak triggered the same industry response: more water testing, better labeling, voluntary pledges. Never toilets. Never breaks. Never accountability for the decision to treat human biological necessity as a productivity problem to be managed around rather than a right to be protected.

to be America first

Newly released footage shows US Senator Lindsey Graham conspiring with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to lobby President Donald Trump to support Israel in bombing Lebanon.

In the recorded call, Graham said he planned to encourage Trump to join Israeli strikes against Hezbollah, but Netanyahu advised against opening another front while Israel was focused on Iran, saying they could always do it later.

Graham agreed with Netanyahu's assessment, calling it "good

counsel"

Axon Streetlight ALPR Expands Vehicle Tracking Options

Axon Lightpost is a fixed camera system that mounts on existing municipal streetlights through Ubicquia’s UbiHub platform. It performs automated license-plate recognition, vehicle attribute recognition, and livestreaming, feeding data into Axon’s Fusus evidence and real-time awareness tools. Power comes from the streetlight’s photocell interface; connectivity is cellular.

The architecture lowers the cost and visual profile of ALPR compared with standalone poles. Continuous plate and video capture occurs at the edge, with encrypted transmission to the agency’s Axon environment. Retention, access controls, and any cross-agency sharing are set by the contracting department rather than by a uniform national rule. No public record establishes that every streetlight in the United States will receive a unit.

Streetlight-based LPR platforms have already been used by multiple vendors, including prior Ubicquia–Flock pairings. Axon introduced Lightpost after ending its earlier data partnership with Flock; several cities that canceled Flock contracts have since contracted with Axon for comparable coverage. Expansion therefore follows ordinary municipal procurement rather than a single mandated network.

Net exposure is the cumulative density of vehicle tracking that becomes feasible once installation barriers drop. Oversight remains with city councils, state ALPR statutes, open-records requests for contracts and retention policies, and any local ordinances that require public notice or density limits before streetlight attachments are approved.

Join Vigils Nationwide to Mourn ICE's Victims, Demand Justice Tomorrow

From Houston to Biddeford, Maine to St. Augustine to rural Georgia, ICE is leaving plenty of blood on the streets this month. And from the individual agents to the institution itself, no one is being held responsible for it. It’s unacceptable. And we’re not going to stand for it.

This Saturday, the Disappeared in America coalition (which includes Public Citizen, the National Day Laborers Organizing Network, The Workers Circle, Detention Watch Network and the League of United Latin American Citizens) is holding a national day of action, demanding justice for Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, justice for Johan Sebastian Duran Guerrero, and justice for all the victims. We’re bringing folks together to demand transparent, independent investigations; protection for the witnesses detained in ICE facilities; accountability both for individuals and institutions; and real steps to stop these killings from happening over and over. We want ICE out for good and our neighbors safe.

🪧 Vigils are already scheduled in more than 300 communities nationwide, and we’re still growing. Let’s find one near us to attend here, and we can find tools to host or register our own actions here. 🪧
