We got Barry and Tony in June of 2021; Tony had terrible ataxia and his feathers were disturbingly pale; after he molted, they became much brighter. He passed in December of the following year. Barry is still with us, a bit more ragged, and he has issues; neither ever learned to fly, and we have to trim Barry's nails or they get too long and he can't move well. But he's very gentle and tolerant of us.
With rescue birds, you're never certain how old they are, or what they've been through. You don't know how long they'll be with you, how previous health issues from poor treatment will impact their life. But every day you can give them in a loving, safe home is a precious thing. We've had rescues die after a few months, and we've had rescues be with us for many years. One of our cockatiels is definitely over 26 years old, and has been with us for 15 years or so.
Rescue birds require special care often, but if you can give it, they're well worth it.
Of our flock of seven, two of our cockatiels and three of our budgies are rescues, and our remaining budgie is the daughter of one of her other rescues, we were told would never be able to socialize properly. Sadly, her mother passed earlier this year.
