CMV: AAVE and Hiberno-English are consistent English dialects, not just "broken English". Furthermore, it is wrong to correct a speaker for using phrases like "I seen it" (AAVE) or "He walked in and me and taking my bath" (Hiberno) as they are following correct grammar rules in their dialect.

As said in the title, most linguists now recognize that the language afflictions of Black Americans are not just a vulgar uneducated form of English, but a consistent English dialect with its own internal rules. This similarly applies to the Hiberno-English of Ireland, which borrows colloquialisms and grammar influences from Gaelic.

Variations from standard English in these dialects are not a "free for all", in fact, there will be correct and incorrect ways of using such dialects. Speakers of AAVE will easily spot misused AAVE that breaks its normative grammar: the phrase "college be like this" is considered correct by AAVE rules, but if you say "this is what college be like" it will be flagged as unnatural, incorrect by AAVE speakers.

Modern linguists attempt now to codify and understand the mechanics of grammar rules. Let's look at some examples.

Here are the lyrics for the song Three Man Weave by the rap group Injury Reserve:

>My biggest worries were missin' a free throw | Now me, Groggs and P doin' the three man weave, though

One would notice the missing auxiliary verb "are" connecting the subject (me, Groggs and P) and the action (doing). Instead of dismissing this as outright wrong, linguists now recognize this is a grammar-backed instance of copula deletion, where an auxiliary verb in AAVE can be omitted when its inexpression would not lose meaning. (And, additionally, you can have copula deletion in standard English headlines. "Suspect on the run!" is frequently observed in standard, non-AAVE English.)

Let's take an example from Hiberno. Here's a line from the stageplay The Lieutenant of Inishmore:

>Good, cos there's a dance at the church Friday would you take me to?

This is a case of a resumptive structure wherein a "loose" clause is added onto a main clause. Irish Gaelic has a very complex sentence-clause structure that would frankly be a huge detour to this post, but the point of it being: these are not just broken words being employed willy-nilly, they are predictive, studied, consistent, and most importantly, they can also be wrong. Which implies there is a right way of doing so.

Dialects are, in many ways, the birthplace of languages. Every non-conlang was originated first as a dialect, then as a language. The Standard English phrase "I have been living in London for three years." is wholly correct in current Standard English, but surprisingly not long ago it would have been considered an utterly broken and uneducated form of the phrase "I have lived in London these three years." You would be asinine to correct someone for saying "I have been living in London for three years," the same way you'd be out of line correcting someone for saying the Hiberno phrase "He was frightened be a corgi as a little fella" (another excerpt from The Lieutenant! Great play.)

AAVE and Hiberno are not incorrect.

Everyone's been saying "man, wouldn't it be cool if Nirvanna got some academy recognition?", but to me the true inspired pick would be if Nirvanna got a VFX nom.

Nowadays most people have some idea of how special effects in movies are made. Movies have lost some of their movie magic. NTBTSTM is the first movie in a while that made everyone go "wait. how the fuck did they do that??"

Has anyone ever gotten nominated for Supporting Actor by playing the lead character, while the lead actor was not?

I don’t mean category fraud, I mean in cases where the supporting character plays the main character after a time skip or similar scenario. Same character as the lead actor, smaller role.

Only example I can think of is in the Golden Globes nominating Paul Dano for playing a young Brian Wilson in supporting for Love & Mercy. But that’s actually a funny example, as I’d argue that was category fraud and that Dano was lead and Cusack (playing older Brian Wilson) was supporting in that movie. But “by the books” it is an example of supporting nom, lead misses, same character.

TIL that Swedish biologist Carl Linnaeus has been appointed as the type specimen for Homo Sapiens. In simple terms, when scientists ask "is this a human?", they are asking "is this specimen the same species as Carl?"

I play … a human fighter named Bob 😂😂😂😂😂

Get it 🤣 instead of picking those kooky races and characters Im playing… a human 😭 named Bob 😭

This is so funny because like, it’s not kooky or wacky. Actually it’s not even funny— it’s based!! Don’t you see how based it is? Everyone will reply to this post saying “based”. If anyone accuses my character of being boring I’ll just whiff something about “a good writer doesn’t need to be a half kobold dhampir slaad plasmoid centaur hybrid to be interesting” because that’s literally the only two options. Ain’t I based??? ITS SO. BASED!!! ITS THE MOST BASED CHARACTER, MAN!!!! A FIGHTER NAMED BOB!!! I swear I’ll make it interesting. I’ll be the most interesting character at the table. Because playing Bob instead of Garthyiek makes me a better writer and improviser than you, Githzerai player. You definitely use your race as a crutch for your lack of interesting character building skills. Right? Right???

Now. What's this "well written" and "interesting" character story? it's uh... so... it's, it's like. So there's this guy called "Bob"... so, he's a human, right? ... like, Human Fighter named Bob ... sooo based 😂 At least I'm not playing a frog person. My character is actually interesting instead of relying on its race and class as the concept 🤣 plus he's named Bob 😭🤣

Now I can’t wait for everyone to comment “based. /uj: based” on this post to own those goblin players 😂😂😂 Bob gang!! So based!!!

[Online][5e, 2014][18+][NSFW] Looking for 1-2 players for a messy, romantic, Sex-and-the-City-style mini-campaign about horsefucking in Baldur's Gate 🐴✨

Hey everyone! I’m looking to run a super casual, very RP-heavy mini-campaign (around 4-5 sessions) for 1 or 2 suitors, on Discord voice, horsefucker simulator & Roll20. If you love high fantasy, horsecock, messy situationships, and treating D&D like a dating sim where actions actually have consequences, this is exactly your aesthetic.

The Vibe:

Basically, I want to run Sex and the City but set in the sprawling, chaotic streets of Baldur’s Gate. The main quest isn't about slaying a dragon; it’s about finding love, getting laid, Mississippi fried horse pussy and going to tavern brunches to debrief about bad dates. There will be a few encounters, but it'll be 60-70% RP. We’re going for a tone that is casual, funny and NSFW. I want the emotional beats and the romance to feel genuine, even if the premise is a bit chaotic.

The Plot / Your Character:

Here’s the lore: You (or you and a co-player) were a totally normal human until a wild magical mishap permanently turned you into a centaur.

The cognitive dissonance is real. From the waist up, you are totally human with your normal sensibilities, anxieties, and need for actual romance. But from the waist down, you’re dealing with a new, massive body and some intense, hypersexuality that you are absolutely not used to.

If this sounds like your exact brand of brainrot, shoot me a DM or a chat! Tell me a bit about yourself, your pronouns, sexual preferences, and your absolute favorite romance/smut trope. Let's make some bad decisions in Faerûn lmao.

Discussion from my comment in a different post: The one feature I want to see in Spore 2

One feature I think a Spore 2 should have, but might be too complex and out of scope for most fan projects, is some degree of spontaneous evolution/a rudimentary evolution simulation. Let us see other branches of evolution of our same species, let us see how the friendly creatures we see when we get on land evolve alongside us. I want evolution to be a bigger part of the game, not just something players do to progress. Instead of just dropping 78 pre-made creatures into the world, let's see how a handful of creatures evolve into 78 different species as we go along. I don't like how, in a game all about evolution, we are always evolving but the world remains static.

I hate people who fundamentally misunderstand "Ghibli Vibes" and turn it into some cozycore aesthetic (& even worse, when they make products based off it)

People want to bank off "Ghibli Vibes" but it never feels like an actual representation of the aesthetics, themes and feel of a ghibli movie. It's usually just one or two serene grassy scenes from Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke. Everything is pristine and cozy and beautiful.

They completely ignore the fact that almost every single Ghibli movie is a meditation on the nature of ugliness; and often feature critiques of war (which is a common thread among many ghibli films). Ugliness IS core to Ghibli as a studio. EVERY ghibli film has the serene be a backdrop to the real emotional core of the fucked up bits. EVERY ghibli film makes you uncomfortable at times. But no, nooooooo nonono, your "ghibli inspired" cozy indie RPG about a witch in the alps looking for her cat is only about serene vibes and drinking soup in a grassy hill.

That's why it fucking sucks ass.

Also I doubly hatethissmug about products like Obojima that hold no identity of their own, and instead exist only as "ghibli vibes: the product". There is something inherently anti-art about making completely empty art that exists with the only purpose of making you think of some other art product (you didn't make!) and constantly going "oh? you like that? remember this scene in that movie? really cool right? you like that movie? ohhhh you like that movie. doesn't this product make you think of that movie? yeah it does. go on man, think of that movie you like. hell yeah man. no original content here, just making you think of that movie. now thats the good shit. buy our product so you can think of that movie you like."

Where (and how!) to make queer/alternative friends in Paris?

Hi! I arrived in Paris last week, I’m gonna be staying here for about a month. This is a lovely city, don’t get me wrong, I’m enjoying every aspect of it… but I feel lonely!

Usually how I make friends in the places I go is I’ll be walking down the street, I spot a girl with a nice alt outfit, I compliment what she’s wearing and we start chatting. But here in Paris everyone’s so busy, they usually just give me a heartfelt “merciiii 🥰🥰🥰” and continue on their run to wherever they were going.

So it’s Friday night, I’m thinking “this is the perfect time!”, so I put on a cute outfit and head to the Marais. I sit at a queer bar, those with the queer flag outside, and… beer at exhorbitant prices, no alternative peeps, no one looking to make friends. :’)

So!! How do alt people in their earth 20s make friends in Paris? Is there a spot I’m missing? Some social ritual they haven’t taught me in Poitier? Do I need even pricier beer (maybe I can sell a kidney for it)

Please let me knowwwww :’))

Can you recommend me French movies, TV shows, and places where I can find movie discussions in the French language?

I need to improve my French expeditiously, but I don't even know where to start with French films. I'm notoriously bad with just scrolling through media and picking one I want to watch, I usually find the things I wanna watch by reading online discussion.

The thing is. French language media is massive. I have no idea where to start, or what will interest me. Could someone help me find media in French that aligns with my tastes?

My favorite director is Martin McDonagh. I love all of his films, all of them fall in my top 10~20. Other recent films I loved are Poor Things, EEAAO, The Big Short, Marty Supreme, Uncut Gems, Parasite, Bring Her Back, Eddington, No Other Choice, Bottoms, Bugonia, etc. I like weird, screenplay and dialogue-forward, not too slow, slightly anxious-feeling films. My favorite TV shows are Succession and Better Call Saul.

Instead of just a rec list, I would love to see a discussion of where to find and discuss films in French. I often come to reddit to find films I'd like, I would love to know what would be the Francophone equivalent of that.

How come Ceuta, despite being equivalent tp a micronation (in terms of being a city fully enclosed by a national border), has that little village called Benzú on the north? Is it part of Ceuta or is it autonomous? How did it form? Why settle there instead of in the main city?

Years like this are quite boring.

July comes around, clear-hit-will-sweep-all-category drops. Everything else is uncompeteable. Universal critic and audience acclaim. Thirteen morbillion dollars at the box office.

Not even halfway of the year until March and we already know who wins BP, Director, Editing, Actor, etc. Sure, nothing's set in stone. Come Oscar night and Iñarritu might snag a statuette, Sam Rockwell gets his second, etc.

But man, actively following the race and discussing it is a lot less fun. Every trailer drop and festival appearance feels like it holds less weight. "Oh cool this is coming out too I guess.......". We go into the ceremony already knowing who's winning the last award.

I still hold out hope that a certain Horse movie will blow expectations off the fucking park come November and we'll finally have a real race again, but for now. Yawn.
