Some chunky industrial structures from my 2D base-building game, Echo Zero

• The Bot Boy grants powerful random droid upgrades, but must be discovered in the wild.

• The Gunner Printer builds little gunner bots, each costing increasing amounts of scrap.

• The Slime Farm slowly grows valuable slime over time.

• The trusty Builder Bot Spawner creates helper bots to handle your base tasks.

• The Blast Mite Builder automatically produces a self-destruct droid each day that marches toward enemy territory.

Which frozen environment direction do you prefer?

This area of the game is a freezing underground zone where some strains of the enemy organism can generate really cold temperatures.

Echo Zero is a slightly dark sci-fi base defense roguelite, so part of me feels like the moodier second environment fits the game better overall. But the first environment has much more striking colors and stands out more visually maybe, so I’m a bit torn on which direction feels stronger.

Does one direction feel obviously better to you? Or do they just give off different vibes?

Just sharing how I animate some of the VFX frame-by-frame from my Sci Fi game

This is my frame-by-frame process behind the flame engulf effect plus how it looks in-game. I'm still finding myself not super happy with how effect animations turn out sometimes, I'm fine with how this looks though 😊

Implemented some Death Ray roof turrets

Just implemented different roof turret types which make wave defense a bit more interesting. This death Ray turret is called the Sky Lance and absolutely creams slower enemies, but fast enemy types fully avoid it so it's better not to just only build Sky Lances unless you wanna gamble on which enemies will come next.

We are currently adding a bunch of different roof turret types, any suggestions for other roof turret ideas are very welcome 😊

We might run some playtests through our Discord soon if anyone’s interested in trying it out.

All ceiling turrets in Echo Zero must be chosen from a classic pick 1 from 2 or 3 choice reward screen.

Working on a new outfit design for the main character

The outfit maybe looks a bit silly so I'm not sure if it's cool or just something players would hate to equip, the different outfits have different effects like stat buffs or on hit effects or passive specials, still thinking about what this outfit could do.

Any feedback is appreciated

Hey I'm making a slimy 2D Sci-fi strategy roguelite called, Echo Zero. Droids are one of the core pillars of my game, but I'm wondering if I should put a population cap on all my droids or if people just want the freedom to go wild with how many different droids they can spam if they can scavenge enough resources. Also the fact that the game is 2D means some overlapping chaos happens which maybe looks a bit messy?

I’m working on a 2D sci-fi base building/defence game (Echo Zero) and trying to avoid common frustrations in the genre. The game focuses on slight minimalism while still allowing for depth in order to avoid those meaty onboarding phases you have to pass your brain through in some base building strategy games.

Some things I’m thinking about:

  • too much micromanagement
  • slow early-game buildup
  • Overwhelming onboarding
  • base layouts becoming messy/unreadable
  • lack of meaningful automation

Curious what annoys you the most in base building games?

I’m trying to design around those pain points, so any insight helps a lot.
