Incontinence pants for menstruation

Hey all,

I am curious. A while ago, I was with a client during an appointment for an incontinence specialist. Out of curiosity, I asked what the difference between incontinence underwear versus menstrual underwear, and whether they can be used interchangeably. The specialist said that they are designed for different viscosities

Disposable period pants are a thing in the market now, but they only come in packs of two. I haven't done a full price break down, but my intuition thinks that incontinence pants/pads might be cheaper.

Doubled with the fact that I have a vague memory when I was younger of accidentally buying incontinence pads, and they were SOOO comfy. I loved how thick they were.

I'm curious to know if there is any insight into this?

I am a heavy bleeder because of my IUD. I am aware of this, I am okay with it for now. Have spoken to doctors about it.

Pillows for Dad - Rough User

Hey all,

Curious to see some recommendations. My dad is incredibly rough on pillows. He has curly, white hair and stubble that almost acts like sandpaper on pillowcases. For whatever reason, the pillow fill also looks like it's seen better days.

I'm wondering what type of pillow case material might be good for him?

Thanks.

Finding out I was fired via centrelink reporting

"Your employer said you chose to leave the job on (date)."

WELL THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I BLOODY HEAR OF IT.

"You must provide details to support the reason for no longer working. Details of what happened:"

Honestly I'm a quite lost for words. What do I even tell Centrelink? I did not choose to leave this job - I loved it.

Questions for seasoned academics

Hey all.

I am coming into my second year at uni. I am studying a Bachelor of Secondary Education at QUT. Given how much I love university now, I am seriously considering the prospect of whether doing a PhD might be good for me.

In saying that though, my journey into university education wasn't straight forward. As a mature-age student, I went through TAFE to complete my senior study certificate because I didn't pass in high school. Soon enough I got my ADHD diagnosed, and decided to revisit that old chapter.

Although that course did give me some really good study strategies, there are a lot of things that were counter productive (in text references had to have a page/paragraph number, even for massive journal articles), and I had to relearn how to properly read pubmed articles.

Sob story aside. There are things about academia that I would like to know. Without further ado...

  1. What type of academia do you do?

  2. How do you study in general?

  3. What does your assignment timeline look like? What does your process look like?

  4. Within those steps, how do you do research? What information do you look for?

  5. How do you start assignments? What happens when you get writers block?

I know these are some loaded questions. Feel free to answer in however much or little detail you wish. Because of my background, I'm really battling against my barriers to study. I want to believe that I can make myself an academic, but there is a lot I don't know.

Blood stains and water temp

Hey all,

There was a post of someone asking about blood stains, and I copped a fair bit of heat when I suggested the OP use hotter water.

I understand the generally accepted way of dealing with blood stains is to use cold water. However, when I decided to convert to reusable menstrual products (period undies and cloth pads at first), cold water never worked, no matter how soon I attended to them.

My belief that hot water is superior was informed by Pager (2000), where hot water and was found to be most effective at dealing with the stains, as well as dealing with the stain early. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC27558/

I'm wondering if some of our in-group experts have any knowledge on this? Anecdotally, my stuff comes out cleaner than ever using hot water, and I have less residual smell.

Black Gloves recommendations

Hey all,

I'm struggling to find a suitable sub for my query, but I am looking for recommendations for black nitrile gloves available in Australia that have a skin-tight feel.

The ones I have found are not stretchy enough, or aren't available in smalls. I plan to buy in bulk, so online is good.

If there are any specifications I should look for, that would be really good to know. I really like Medicom blue gloves, just wish it was in black.

Tea towels & cleaning cloths: am I doing too much? It feels like I'm doing too much.

Hey lovely people. As the title implies, I am curious to know whether my laundry ritual is excessive or unintentionally counterintuitive, and where I can make it more efficient.

For reference, we have an Asko washer. I have done this ritual since before this machine.

Basically, it goes:

- Wash 1 (2 hrs, 60°C, OMO, citric acid in rinse): All tea towels, general use microfiber cloths, mop heads, terry cloths used for cleaning.

Sometimes I add bath mats, and toilet cleaning microfiber cloths (for seats). I'll call them toilet microfibers.

- After wash 1: Hang out mop heads, bath mats (side note: I keep writing bath maths lol).

Hang toilet microfibers (more on that later).

Soak the general microfibers in a bucket of hot sodium percarbonate (oxiclean), sometimes adding tea towels.

If not adding tea towels, rewash on a short cycle (1hr, 60°C, less detergent, citric acid in rinse).

- After at least 12 hours (typically more like 3-4 days): wring out all cloths, and add to washing machine.

**Important step:** admire the yucky water.

Rewash (60°C, less detergent, citric acid).

- After wash 2: Remove the toilet microfibers from line to make way for general microfibers.

Hang the general microfibers (+tea towels) to air dry.

Soak the toilet microfibers in the same manner as general cloths. By the time that the toilet cleaning ones are ready to be hung out, the general microfibers are ready to be folded and put away.

*End of process*

I do this almost every single time. It IS very excessive, but it's the only way I guarantee my stuff is clean. It's also low key meditative, especially wringing the cloths out as I throw them in washing machine.

However, I can see how it is a bit ridiculous.

There are things I used to do that were straight up stupid. I like having the cloths sorted by colour

(in the drawer it's a system so that green = we have plenty, orange = shit, we running low better put on a load).

So I used to sort them into colours before hanging them. I was in a rush one day, and I randomly put them out. When I went to bring them in, I realised that I could just collect by colour, even if they were randomly hung.

If my explanation of the predicament doesn't make any sense, I'm happy show some diagrams of before vs now, but basically, it's well meaning, but stupid, inefficiencies I do that can make a huge difference between a task being enjoyable hobby vs a chore that inhales my time.

Something I am unsure about is whether I should be doing a rinse only cycle instead of a full wash for wash 2 (after soaking). That would cut that down from 1h45m to 20m, probably saving water and detergent as well.

Any tips would be appreciated!

Also, by way of a reminder, criticise the process not the person. Laundry is borderline a hobby for me, which is pretty dull, but its why I love this sub.

Reglazing Lenses

Hey all,

I am trying to save money by investing in decent quality frames, and replacing the lenses as needed.

So far I have:

- 2 Ralph Lauren Polo frames. Clear frame - slightly outdated script, I use these as my spare glasses. Green frame - good script, just a little worn out.

- 1 Ray Ban State Street sunglasses - polarised lenses.

Through my private health insurance extras (AHM), I am covered for $180 per year in glasses. My script is hefty, so $180 only covers the reglazing for one pair per year.

I'm struggling to prioritise which ones I should get done. I really like my current frames, but idk if I should update my clear frames to have the updated script.

Any tips?

Thank you all.

Laundry sorting

I feel like this post belongs in the dull mens sub lol.

Today I decided to look at my laundry sorting, and drew up a table. The table is loosely sorted by frequency, priority level, time length of the wash cycle, etc, etc.

Something I really struggle with is filling up my activewear loads. I do know I can probably add stuff from my darks wash, but the temperature does make a difference.

I'm not sure how this list is going to help me in any significant way, but I rather have things written down so that I don't have to think about it constantly.

And yes, I did enjoy doing this. Adulthood is getting excited doing things like this.

Hand fan from Schottis blinds off-cuts.

Hey all,

I decided to trim some of my schottis blinds to be shorter, and was left with the excess. I decided that a hand fan was in order!

Mine has 13 peaks if the blind (if you think about the letter Z, it has 1.5 peaks), a pair of recycled wooden chopsticks (used but clean and dry), and duct tape. The tape I used is whit.

I used chopsticks to measure out how much I wanted. Marked that out, cut. I taped the bottom part to close it off. I then taped the chopsticks to the side for reinforcement.

It could possibly use with a better handle, and some paddlepop stick reinforcements throughout, but I just wanted to give you a bit of inspiration!

If you can do this better, let me know!!

It's winter out here in Australia, but I am well aware of how hard its been in the northern hemisphere. I feel bad for everyone in the UK - wish I could have had this idea sooner.

Better Australian laundry powder

Hey all,

I use my own laundry detergent to the rest of my family. At one point, my brother bought a 20kg bucket of low-quality detergent (his reasoning was 'it was cheap), which the rest of my family has used up. Now that they are back to buying better detergents, my dad has been buying Biozet. Despite the cost (not exactly cheap @ $7-$12 per KG), and promise of using "enzymes", I believe this detergent isn't as effective. Plus, the smell doesn't rock my world.

I know this sub is largely American based, but I would like to know what Aussie detergents (powders) are evidence based. I mainly shop at Aldi, but we also have a Coles and Woolies. We can also go to Bunnings.

If anyone has a link to resources, that would be great.

Is a colonoscopy overkill?

Hey all,

I am experiencing intermittent bright red bleeding and sharp pain when I go.
Edit: tearing. There are tears on the outside that cause bleeding.

Edit 2: I am low-key at my wits end because the doctors aren't doing anything about the pain I am in or suggesting anything in the meantime.

I have seen a GP and gastroenterologist, who have both recommended a colonoscopy.

To me this seems like overkill. I get that they are trying to investigate a serious problem, but we haven't even tried lifestyle measures.

I am on the waitlist for a colonoscopy. I was told it would be 6 months until I am seen (unless things get worse). I have time to decide basically.

They all seem to be saying that its my only option in order to rule out something more serious, but I don't understand what the fuss is all about, and why I can't look into pelvic floor physio in the meantime.

I am tempted to believe that its something to do with neurologically holding on longer than I should (I don't like going in public places, which sucks when I'm at uni).

Now what?

Guys I am going to be crawling the walls until semester 2 starts.

Legitimately, semester breaks are a really difficult time for me mentally, and I need to occupy myself with something.

I'm wondering what I can be doing in the meantime?

I was tempted to do a QUTyou subject, but I wouldn't know how to do it over the break. Any help would be appreciated.

8 weeks no grade back :/

Hey all,

There is a unit that I'm in where the tutor is also the UC.

We had an assignment due april 15, and we still haven't gotten grades back. Since then, we've had our last assignment due, and its feeling less likely that grades are not going to be rushed.

The tutor is aware of it, and has explained that they are under the pump, which I completely understand.

Possible causes: No intermediate warm from laundry sink

Hey all,

Curious to know if this issue is a simple DIY fix, or whether I need to call someone in.

Basically, our laundry sink taps run really hot water quite well. However, when I want it to be slightly cooler, if I turn the cold tap, even slightly, it goes 100% cold.

It's one of those things that isn't a huge deal breaker, but I would like a fix. I occassionally wash small pets in that basin, and its inconvenient playing DJ Waterworks trying to adjust between the two trying to find a balance. I could use a shower that is nearby, but that is annoying.

Sinks and pipes are old (my guess is 30-40 years old?).

I love my ADHD, and its a part of who I am, but I genuinely cannot cope with my own bullshit.

Where do I even start?

Cat litter subs?

Hey all,

I've been really getting into cat litter (literally and metaphorically).

I'm currently using pine litter, which is great for waste reduction, but has its own challenges.

I'm wondering if there are cat litter subreddits where people talk about their toileting systems.

I wanna know how things can be done more efficiently and easier.

Vague feedback

Hey all,

Question for how to deal with vague feedback.

I was told something as a 'oh yeah, just remember to be like xyz when your abc', and it seemed pretty broad. I asked whether it was feedback, and manager said it was, which came as a shock.

I don't work directly with manager, so it either came from someone within our team, or from another department. Trouble is, it was way too vague of feedback to pin a specific incident from which it arose from (and whether I actually know what I in that instance was not ideal).

I genuinely got the vibe that the manager was cool about it as part of the learning process, but I've had similar situations not end well in this type of way. I hope its not one of those situations where little things are actually a bit deal, but I don't know.

Manager knows that I've been asking other team members for advice etc. At this point, I'm either overthinking, but I wanna know the specific situation it arose from.

Is it too much if I ask for further details on the situation?

Dyslexia vs unwillingness

Hey all,

Just to preface, the one thing I love more than neurodiversity, is seeing neurodiverse people win.

I recently started a job at a high school (upper SES) where there is a lot of... 'disability apologies' which seem to be a little ableist.

I can't quite describe the specific situation today, but there was a lot of "I can't because of my dyslexia" despite me and other support staff members going above and beyond what we should do (for dyslexia) to get an answer for his exam.

My gut says this is teenager learned helplessness, but I would love to know if there is a specific sign that they are just saying they have dyslexia to get out of doing something.

My brain is saying that people with dyslexia can thrive when they are given the tools they need. I'm just not seeing that with these kids.

Any pointers would be great.

Thanks!!
