Miami Marine Stadium gets the Yes vote

Since Miami voters voted yes, the city of Miami is going to hire a corporate partner to organize events in the parking lot and generate revenue from ticket sales. Then, they can generate a bond to pay for the structural and architectural repairs to the stadium.

The referendum that was voted today states that the city of Miami would hire an event company to set up a flex park event space to host events and the money from that would go towards the city of Miami being able to secure a bond. The bond could then be used for the stadium renovation. The event company can sell tickets to these events and the city would receive 93% gross sales, 85% sponsorship revenues, and the city would pay the event company a management fee of $33,333 a month to organize events.  Global Spectrum a subsidiary of Oak View Group (OVG) is the corporate partner who wants to organize year round events at the site.

Long abandoned Cooley High School in Detroit in which Jake explored in 2017, is finally being demolished. It sat abandoned for 16 years

Bright Sun Films original video of the abandoned Cooley High School: https://youtu.be/XXnR6k08VqI?is=CrBUf_p65dU0eofE

Detroit Public Schools ruined any chance of this building being saved by simply never securing the building. They never even put boards over the broken windows until it was too late. Shame on them that this beautiful piece of Mediterranean revival architecture will now be gone.

A local nonprofit had tried to save the building but Detroit Public School rejected selling it to them for $1 million. The decision was made to demolish the building as it had deteriorated way too far for it to ever be used again.

Former Herberger’s department store is now a Von Maur department store at West Acres Mall

Von Maur is probably my favorite department store out there with the exception of Boscov’s.

I think there’s a possibility we see Titanic II finished and put into service before a model of the Titanic is completed and released.

Clive Palmer still wants to build Titanic and have it completed by 2027 or at some point but like this game, there is no completion date that will probably be ever known lol.

Dick’s House of Sport opens in former Sears at Westmoreland Mall on July 28, 2026

The lower level looks to be redeveloped into another anchor spot in the future as seen in the last photo. This was one of the 235 locations spun off into Seritage Growth Properties in 2015.

The Sears department store opened along with the rest of the mall in February, 1977 with a surprise visit of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood character Fred McFeely (Sears provided grants to Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood through the Sears Roebuck Foundation so they were well known to work together).

Sears operated from February, 1977 until December 28, 2018 when the store announced its closure due to bankruptcy. The store shuttered on March 17, 2019.

Dick’s Sporting Goods announced plans to build one of their large format Dick’s House of Sport concept stores and it opened on July 28, 2026.

Seafood City opens their largest store in North America in the former Sears at Chandler Fashioner Center. Also their first store in Arizona

Store just held their grand opening today. Seafood City is located above the Round1. Round1 is on the lower floor of the former Sears. Apparently, Seafood City has been leaking water into the former Round1 from the fish tanks which is uh… an interesting way to put two retailers. you’d think they’d put Seafood City on the bottom floor to avoid that but so far the reviews have been great. Sears building on the exterior is largely unchanged which is nice.

Roman Temple of Vic in Spain built in the 2nd century under Emperor Trajan. A castle was built utilizing the existing structure either in 897 or the 11 century. The Roman Temple was rediscovered during the demolition of the castle in 1882.

Located in Catalonia, this was built in the Roman city of Vic in the 2nd century. It’s unknown why the temple was forgotten about until 1882. If it was still in use by the 4th-century, the temple would have been closed during the persecution of pagans under the Christian emperors. In the 11th century, the temple was literally covered by the structure of the Castle of els Montcada, which later became the residence of the Veguers and finally, the prison of Vic. It was not until 1882, during the demolition of the old castle, that the workers spotted the Roman temple in very good condition.

Travis Barr-Longo makes strange comments about children and the school board dressed in drag on Instagram 8 months prior to arrest

Did really no one see back in October that there might be something off going on here? He had been getting away with this for years while being on the school board is just completely dumbfounding still a month later. I just saw this video that he was making strange comments on Instagram before he deleted his account and I just am at a loss for words at this point.

Miami Marine Stadium to be voted upon by citizens of the City of Miami on August 18.

On August 18, 2026, city of Miami voters will decide whether to approve a 40-year agreement with Global Spectrum to activate and manage events while helping fund the venue’s restoration.

I very much hope this structure can be saved as many famous people have performed or visited the site such as Elvis Presley, Jimmy Buffett, The Beach Boys, Ray Charles, Queen, The Who, Lunyrd Skynyrd, Aretha Franklin, President Richard Nixon, and was used for many boating competitions and Catholic masses for Cuban immigrants.

The city of Miami completed stabilization work to secure the pylons supporting the over-water structure, finalizing the repair of nine piles and two concrete caps in January, 2024. The pylon work utilized reinforced pile jackets with cathodic protection to stop rusting from saltwater exposure. This was considered Phase I of the overall structural rescue. I would love to see the stadium fully restored and while the restoration has been an huge issue for the last 30 years, the structure actually remains very secure and intact from this work the city of Miami did to save the structure. You might as well restore it if you already started repairing it.

Hilario Candela, a Cuban immigrant, designed the structure when he was 28 years old in 1963. He died in 2022 after years of trying to advocate to save the structure and his efforts did see some results over the years.

I think this venue has a real good chance of being saved if the vote on August 18, 2026 is yes. It’s not as difficult to save as other abandoned stadiums such as the Houston Astrodome and there has already been work to save it. I hope people ultimately vote yes to save this. It’s a really unique venue that has survived hurricane after hurricane. I think saving this abandoned structure is ultimately worth the money.

Edit: Apparently, Jimmy Buffett and his daughter were also huge supporters to see the venue saved from abandonment: https://youtu.be/fq7j-_fhgKA?is=e3wqa2QuTcuC8n5B
