Is it worth doing a rural placement as a student?

2nd year student here getting ready to do my preferences for my 2nd placement.

I did a placement in the Gold Coast last year and it was great but spent a lot of time ramped. My mentors suggested somewhere like Toowoomba or Ipswich is good because you get a mix of rural/metro jobs.

Can anyone else please add to this or argue against it?

Contemplating going to somewhere like Rockhampton just for the sake of getting out of brissy for a bit.

Comparison between state service graduate salaries?

Gday everyone,

I’m a 2nd year student at a university in Queensland and was curious about the graduate salaries in QAS/Rest of Australia.

Going into the degree I was expecting to never make a whole lot of money, was kinda surprised to hear my mentors say they cracked 100k+ a year doing regular shifts.

I’m just curious as to what the take home pay is generally for graduate positions across the state services in Australia. I’m also curious as to how much extra you could take home if you elect to be on call and take on as many extra shifts/overtime’s as you can.

I’m pretty keen to just tick go anywhere on my ambulance employment forms regardless of what state and salary. I have no financial commitments and am single, so have no qualms getting posted rurally for 5 or so years.

From what I understand, most paramedics in QAS take home roughly 5k a fortnight? How does that compare to NSW or SA for example?

Also does anyone have insight into how much mining site paramedics earn? I’ll be applying for any jobs I can get regardless if they are private or state ambulance services.

Best cheap cars that can fit surfboards?

Thinking of selling my evo as it is getting too expensive to run and want something more practical/cheap to run.

Want something that could fit my short board in the car and my log on the roof.

Was thinking of an es lancer!

Has to be manual and preferably an older car 🤙

These types of houses make me so nostalgic

Random houses I have taken from realestate.com

They make me feel nostalgic. I grew up in Brisbane in the 2000s and most of my friends and family lived in houses with this type of architecture. The interiors usually had the same lay out.

Too bad you have to be in the upper echelon to afford one now 🥲

Has the gym become the new pub?

Mid 20s bloke here

Trying to get my mates, as well as my fiancés friends into the pub out for drinks is like getting blood from a stone. I can’t say I’m upset at this either, I’ve spent the last 2 months in the gym on a Saturday avo with my mates and it’s been way funner. Being able to wake up early on Sunday to go for a surf has been a blessing, plus not blowing half my pay packet on overpriced beer. I spent almost every weekend 18-23 clubbing and getting on the nose beers. I don’t really miss it although I’m happy I did it.

I thought maybe it was just my circles but people I talk to at work are having the same experience. One of my colleagues says he just goes to a run club with his mates instead of drinking and has done so since turning 21.

A friend who just moved here from Ireland said he’s embarrassed to drink here because everyone our age just goes for walks and coffee instead of getting on the piss.

Closest surfable beach near Brisbane, Australia?

Is there any spots north or south that are closer than Coolangatta and the spit by any chance? Just needs enough wave for a log.

Could weightlifting be hindering my surfing progress?

I’m a bit of a gym rat, I spend most of my days after work hitting the gym and trying to put on mass and lose weight. I currently weigh 220lb, but worried this weight is going to negatively impact my surfing. I have been considering quitting the weights and focusing on calisthenics at home, and swimming at an Olympic length pool to increase paddle strength etc.

Anyone done a similar sort of move and noticed progress?

How to make the most of an 8ft mini mal?

For now I only have access to my brothers mini mal. I’m saving to get a 9ft+ foam board but most of my money is going towards the fuel it takes for me to get to the beach.

I am yet to stand up, partly because I’m inflexible as fuck (I blame the gym, I’m a bit of a gym rat) and also weigh 220lb. The mini mal is an epoxy board and although it’s nice, I feel like it’s not helping me at all. I have been able to pop up a couple times but I fall off straight away or feel like the board sinks into the wave and I miss it.

So should I start focusing on surfing the small kiddy waves with the mal instead of going out the back and surfing with the other longboarders? I feel my paddle fitness increasing faster than my actual surfing which is frustrating me.

How to prevent injury with my current routine?

Currently I have

Monday - Upper day with mainly compound lifts (dips, ohp, pull-ups etc)

Tuesday - lower day (same deal)

Wednesday - 30km bike ride with multiple hills intermediate yoga in the afternoon

Thursday - Full body workout (mainly compound lifts)

Friday - 1 hour of Swimming with multiple stroke variations intermediate yoga in the afternoon

Saturday - Full rest day

Sunday - Surf for a few hours

I suppose this routine has been fine but I’m curious as to wether or not it can be improvised? My goal is just overall fitness and weight loss. I’m currently 100kg and 6’2, my strength is improving every week but my definition is mainly covered by body fat. I’m eating at 2000-2300 calories a day. I don’t feel too fatigued but worried about some workouts impacting others.
