What a sweet little timepiece.

The WD0012 checks a lot of boxes for this seasoned collector.

-Retro sizing/styling
-Long, simple hour markers
-“Aged” lume dots and matching hands.
-No date

I love that this is an homage to a non existent watch. Back in the ‘90s, I spent days upon days searching for an old school Datejust dial with these kinds of markers to fit my more modern 16200. I never found one.

Back then I was a movement snob, so the Oysterquartz was not my cup of tea. Dumb.

For $125, this is the watch I pined for for years. The finishing at this price point is pretty astounding. I’ve definitely paid more for much less.

Would love to add a second cycle.

Our guy pees a lot. We’ve discovered that an 8 minute delay is ideal to get the majority of his clumps into the box, but there’s almost always a stray clump or two that don’t make it in on the first go. A manual cycle usually does the trick, but if I forget to check and/or too much time passes, I start to smell it.

I’d love to be able to add a second cycle at 15 minutes. Anyone else think this would be helpful?

Convinced there are no humans at Uber support.

Booked a ride. Tesla shows up. Get in the Tesla. Buckle seatbelt. Look up and see the driver frantically tapping the screen and reaching around the borders of the monitor.

Screen says “Updating system software. Do not drive until complete” or something to that effect. Driver is desperately trying to cancel the update. He does not seem very tech savvy.

I Google how to cancel Tesla update. Google says it’s not possible. I tell this to the driver. He keeps tapping the screen and trying to find an off button. After a couple of minutes of this, he says I’m going to have to cancel the ride because it’s probably gonna take 45 minutes. The download does appear to be going very slow.

Stupidly, I cancel instead of making him cancel.

I get out of the car and rebook a new car. While I’m waiting for the new car, I get an email from Uber with a bill for $9.50. I chat support. It’s AI. I explain what happened. The bot refuses to give me a refund. I go back-and-forth multiple times. It keeps telling me how it understands that I am frustrated, but the ride is not eligible for a refund. There was no ride, but whatever.

Finally, it tells me to email support. I do. I explain what happened. The next day I get a refund of $2. I email support again. Today several days later, I get another email reply; “Sorry this ride is not eligible for a refund.”

There are no human beings at Uber support.

My latest LED cordless lamp is dumb.

I bought a small $125 cordless LED accent lamp from Zara Home. It was a lot smaller, 4.5”, tall than I’d hoped, so it didn’t end up working on the side table I’d plan to place it on. It also doesn’t give off the nicest light. It’s too cool and the alabaster shade makes the light kind of pink.

One thing I really liked about it though was the charging. When you plug in the USB C cable to charge it, a small red LED inside the shade glows. When the red light turns off, it’s charged. Very handy.

I might use the lamp somewhere else someday.

But for now, I ordered another table lamp, a domed Visual Comfort “Melange”, 12” tall. This one was A LOT more money, but i got 25%off.

It’s nicely made, but it has absolutely no charging indicator, inside or out, unless mine’s defective. Very dumb.

And it’s a touch lamp with 3 levels. But instead of a low-medium-high touch cycle, it’s high-medium-low. I’ve owned several touch lamps over the years and I’ve never had one that started on high. So counter intuitive.

It’s baffling to me that a $125 lamp has nicer features than a $1500 lamp. Does anyone else own the Melange and can verify there’s no charge indicator?

Networking idiot needs help.

I have a DS 920+. I also have an RTAX6600.

In our previous home, the router connected directly to fiber. The NAS was accessed at 192. 168.1.187.

Then we moved. The new place is not fiber. It utilizes Xfinity cable. They gave us a modem/router.

We need the fastest Internet to be in our second floor office. So I put the Xfinity combo router there and wired our computer via ethernet. Works great.

Two floors below that we have a home theater. That’s where I keep the NAS. Wi-Fi was pretty dismal down there, so I used my RT6600AX in bridge mode, connected to a ethernet over coax adapter. It works well to give the home theater area strong Wi-Fi.

I finally got around to hooking up the NAS downstairs. I plugged it into the RT 6600 AX. But I couldn’t access DSM with my iphone.

I tried the DS Finder app. It can see the NAS and tells me it has the same IP address it had before we moved. But when I click to connect to it, I get an endlessly spinning wheel.

Typing the IP address of the NAS into a browser produces nothing.

Using finds.synology.com, the NAS doesn’t even show up.

What am I doing wrong?

Edit: got it working. Just needed to reset the NAS and it grabbed a new IP.

No more Letterman on Samsung TV Plus?

I just sideloaded the Samsung TV plus app on my TV via KODI, specifically so I could watch David Letterman. The channel seems to be MIA. I also just read about a new deal that worldwide pants inked with another distributor, so maybe that’s why it’s gone. Anyone else still able to see it on their Samsung TV plus?

Say what you want about Gemini, but it has been immensely helpful to me for home decorating.

We just moved to a new place and Gemini has been invaluable in giving us previews of what lamps, rugs, tables, etc. would look like in our space.

Case in point, this small wireless rechargeable lamp that we have been contemplating. I asked Gemini to clear the end table and place the lamp. I told Gemini the height of the lamp and the dimensions of the table. The result is flawless as far as I’m concerned, and it resulted in us ordering the lamp.

New Brooks saddle with crooked nose.

I just took delivery of a new B68. When looking at the nose straight on, the leather on the left side is slightly higher. From the side, you can see more of the tension screw than on the right side. Also on the left, the first rivet protrudes slightly.

The shop that sold it to me is across the country. They’re happy to take it back, but they said it doesn’t look wildly out of the ordinary. They said I could mount it and give it a try, but I doubt I’ll see or feel anything noticeable. I’m more concerned with the leather shifting more over time, especially if it causes that rivet to stick out even further.

Much ado about nothing, or send it back for an exchange?

Turn radius sensor

I feel like if my Gazelle Avignon had a turn radius sensor, maybe it would not have given me a boost of speed when my handlebars were turned 45° after hitting a pinecone I didn’t see, sending me head on into a curb and throwing me from the bike. Am I crazy for thinking this might be a good feature?

Peel/Totallee ultra thin case clones?

I bought a Peel case in fall 2025. It was great. But within 4 months, it was stretched out and practically falling off. Peel sent me a new one for free. They specified this would be the only replacement they would offer. Within four months, it too was loose.

Anticipating that this would be the case, I ordered a cheap case from Temu, and a Totallee.

The Temu case, while advertised as ultra thin, is much thicker and thus doesn’t work with my MagSafe charger. The Totallee is nice but it’s still $35.

Has anyone bought a specific AliExpress or Temu ultrathin case that is made as nicely as the Peel or the Totallee?

Anyone know if any European dealers ship Batavus to the US?

Years ago, I bought a brand new Batavus Breukelen (non powered) from a small dealer in Manhattan. greatest bike I’ve ever owned.

Fast forward to now, and the dealer is long gone and no one else in the country seems to sell Batavus.

I really want a Batavus Finez PT Pro Exclusive. Google has sent me down several dead ends.

HALP!

Could this work?

We have a 14 x 17 foot finished basement room in our rental townhouse that I am turning into a quasi home theater. The room is carpeted. It has an 8’ ceiling. The 17’ left wall has two fairly large square windows with aluminum blinds approximately halfway up the wall and a 1 foot deep ledge below the windows that runs the length of the wall. The right side wall has a wooden shelf filled with some books and decorative objects. At the end of the right side wall is the stair landing. The back wall has our 90” couch against it. The TV is on a low-ish stand opposite the couch, about 2’ away from the wall. We are not using additional speakers for now.

We are getting a very shrill echo from dialogue while watching TV. A slightly less piercing echo can also be heard with the TV off, while speaking at normal volume. A sneeze or a handclap produces the same ringing echo that the TV does.

Sidenote; we bought a 24 in.² cushion for our cat to lay on when he’s upstairs on the wood floors. But he has completely ignored it, because cat.

This morning I took the cat cushion, which is about 1.5” thick, downstairs and put it behind my head, resting it on the back edge of the couch and leaning against the wall. I shouted a couple of times with/without the cushion behind my head, and with it, the ringing echo pretty much disappeared. There was a vague, lower frequency echo that I don’t find offensive.

Being a rental home, I hesitate to drill or glue anything to the walls. I’m also definitely not a DIY guy. So I’ve been looking at buying a freestanding acoustic panel(s) that I could put behind the couch. A clean aesthetic is important to me, and this panel caught my eye. It’s basically metal tubing with a stretchy fabric cover. There’s just over an inch of empty space inside the panel once you stretch the fabric over it.

My thought was to have some sort of acoustic material custom cut to fit inside. I feel like it would have to be fairly rigid and reasonably lightweight, so as not to sag or cause the whole thing to tip over.

Given how effective the little square cat cushion was at reducing the echo, I was thinking that 3 of these panels in a row, which would be wide enough to sit neatly behind the 90 inch couch, and would cover roughly 37 vertical inches of wall, would solve the acoustic problem without damaging the wall or looking weird.

Can anyone weigh in on whether this might be effective with the right baffle material inside the panel, and if so, what might be my best options for the baffle?

Who had a Fire Tire? And who knew it was actually made by Samsonite?

TIL Samsonite branched off into toys in the 60s and 70s, including being the American manufacturer of Lego. They also made this baller toy, which would send a disembodied wheel across the floor of any room, guaranteed to torment your mom.

Anyone have one of these death slides on their school playground in the ‘70s?

At our school in Ohio it was called the jackknife.

Apparently, there was one still around in Minnesota as late as 2015.

The idea was to run and jump onto the sheet metal and try to scramble to the top corner. Then you would sit up there and gloat for a little while till someone else came in and pulled you down or pushed you over the edge lol. I can only begin to imagine the number of injuries and lawsuits this contraption invited.
