"An investigation is underway after a head-on crash left a man dead and two others hospitalized in Ventura County.

On Oct. 5, California Highway Patrol officers responded to the crash scene near Vineyard Avenue and Perello Ranch Road, just outside Oxnard, around 3:16 p.m.

Authorities found two vehicles at the scene, a BMW 328i sedan and a Honda Civic, both with significant front-end damage.

An investigation revealed a 22-year-old woman was driving the BMW with a female juvenile passenger. As they traveled eastbound on Vineyard Avenue, a 45-year-old man driving the Honda Civic was traveling westbound on the same road.

For reasons still under investigation, the male driver suddenly made a left turn, crossed over into opposing traffic lanes and crashed head-on with the BMW.

He sustained major injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was only identified as a 45-year-old man from Santa Paula.

The female driver suffered major injuries and was transported to Ventura County Medical Center. The juvenile passenger was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

"The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health says it is investigating the discovery of a rabies-positive raccoon in the backyard of a home in the Westlake Village area.

The last known confirmed rabid raccoon in Los Angeles County was detected in 1973, health officials said, when the skunk strain of rabies was still present in the county. That strain has not been detected in L.A. County since 1979, health officials say.

The raccoon found in Westlake Village reportedly appeared sick but was not aggressive towards people.

One dog that was up to date on its rabies vaccine may have been exposed to the raccoon, health officials say. The dog is under quarantine and is 'doing well.'

Four people at a worksite may have also been exposed to the raccoon and are receiving recommended follow-up for rabies post-exposure preventative care.

The rabies variant the raccoon was infected with has not yet been determined. Public Health is awaiting variant testing, which can take several weeks.

'Based on current knowledge of rabies occurrence in Los Angeles County, it is likely this raccoon was infected with rabies from a bat,' health officials said.

Rabies remains a public health concern world wide. While it’s preventable, it causes tens of thousands of human deaths globally each year, with most cases linked to exposure to dogs in counties where the dog strain of the variant is still present.

The dog strain of rabies was eradicated in the United States through routine vaccination of pets. However, other strains of rabies continue to circulate in wildlife, including bats.

All strains can infect any mammal and cause disease, health officials warn.

Rabies is a nearly 100% fatal viral disease in people and animals caused by the rabies virus. It’s most commonly transmitted through the bite or scratch of an infected animal, or when saliva from a rabid animal comes into contact with an open wound or mucous membranes such as the eyes, nose or mouth.

Symptoms include, in people, initially fever, weakness, and headache. It progresses to a tingling sensation, anxiety, agitation, abnormal behavior, hallucinations, difficulty swallowing, coma, then death.

In animals, symptoms include vomiting, respiratory distress before progressing into neurologic signs – circling, difficulties walking, behavior change, aggression, paralysis, hydrophobia (fear of water), death." - KTLA 5 News

"A U.S. service member was arrested on suspicion of murder and robbery after a Japanese woman's body was discovered in a hotel in Okinawa, local officials said, describing the alleged killing as a 'heinous' incident that prompted the Japanese government to lodge a protest with the United States.

Shinjiro Koizumi, the Japanese minister of defense, said a U.S. Marine lance corporal was arrested on Sunday after the woman's body was found early on Saturday in Naha, the capital city of the Okinawa prefecture.

NHK, Japan's public broadcaster, identified the suspect as Devin Jacob Ballard, 20, who was stationed at U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, a base a few miles outside Naha. The broadcaster identified the alleged victim as Yagi Anna, 39, saying she was pronounced dead at the scene after being found at about 4:30 a.m. on Saturday.

"A Ventura County man is facing human trafficking-related charges after he was arrested for allegedly soliciting minors for sex acts near Moorpark High School.

Over the past month, Brent William Bischoff, 37, of Simi Valley, was accused of approaching teenage girls at shopping centers near Moorpark High School and offering money in exchange for sex acts.

Seven victims were minors between 14 to 16 years old, according to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office.

Witnesses said that as Bischoff drove his SUV around, he was allegedly 'offering juveniles money for work and making vulgar comments,' the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office said.

On Oct. 1, Bischoff was charged with:

- Seven felony counts of causing a minor to engage in a commercial sex act

- Six felony counts of pandering a minor 16 or older

- One felony count of pandering a minor under 16

- One felony count of pandering by encouraging

- Seven misdemeanor counts of child annoyance

- Special allegation that he was on probation with mandatory supervision, post-release community supervision, or parole when the crime was committed

"CAL FIRE has launched a new mobile platform designed to give Californians real-time information about wildfires and other emergencies directly from public safety agencies.

The new platform, called AwareCA, was announced Thursday by CAL FIRE Chief Joe Tyler, who said the agency’s website received 100 million views in 2025, with a majority of visitors seeking information about wildfires.

"The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department is warning the public after its bomb squad responded to a call at an Ojai home last week when a concerned citizen brought home a Navy MK25 phosphorus marine marker found on the beach.

An MK25 marine marker is an aerially or manually deployed pyrotechnic device that creates both smoke and flame to mark a specific reference point on the water’s surface, according to the U.S. Army.

The citizen noticed the marker at the waterline while walking on the beach and, fearing for the safety of other beachgoers, decided to take the marker home and call law enforcement, according to a social media post from the sheriff’s department.

Authorities did not provide more information about which beach the device was found on.

'Although well intentioned, marine markers, even if wet and expended, are extremely dangerous,' the sheriff’s department said. 'Residual phosphorus can dry out once removed from the water, then spontaneously reignite or explode when moved.'

Marine markers can burn at temperatures of up to 3,000 degrees and are extremely toxic, the sheriff’s department said.

If you come across an item that appears to be a bomb or any other piece of military equipment, authorities urge you to leave it in place, evacuate the area and call 911. Do not take the device home.

"At least two people were killed and seven others were injured in a devastating multi-vehicle crash that left wreckage scattered across an Oxnard roadway Friday afternoon, authorities said.

The crash was reported at Victoria and Doris avenues. About six to seven cars were involved in the collision.

AIR7 footage showed a large pickup truck on its side with its front end heavily damaged. Another wrecked vehicle appeared pinned underneath the truck.

At least one other vehicle behind the truck sustained front-end damage. Just a few feet away near the intersection, an SUV with substantial damage was next to what appeared to be a car engine.

Debris from the wreckage was scattered across the roadway.

Authorities shut down all lanes of Victoria Avenue between Gonzales Road and Teal Club Road as crews and police responded to the scene and investigated the crash.

"Actor Jonathan Taylor Thomas was arrested on Monday morning in Westlake Village.

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Malibu/Lost Hills told KTLA 5 that on Sept. 21 at around 12:30 a.m., the 45-year-old actor was a passenger in a car that was pulled over for a DUI investigation.

Police say that Thomas wasn’t cooperative with deputies and began resisting. He was arrested for obstruction and for being drunk in public.

Citing jail records, PEOPLE magazine reported that he was booked at 1:50 a.m. and was released about 34 hours later. The identity of the driver has not been revealed.

It’s not known if any charges have been filed. That will fall under the district attorney’s office." - KTLA 5 News
