I was recently listening to a video that talked about how causing people feel ashamed of their behaviour can backfire and make them do the behaviour even more. The lady then started talking about harm reduction.
When we are thinking about overeating or being a bit rude or having self discipline issues, yeah, it intuitively makes sense that we shouldn’t make people feel ashamed.
But what about in situations when the behaviour objectively causes extreme harm to the victim of the behaviour? Eg: killing or severely abusing people or animals.
In these kinds of situations where there is objectively a victim who really suffers due to the behaviour, how can you convince the perpetrator to stop without accidentally setting off the shame-based backfire effect?
TLDR: how do you convince someone to stop causing others extreme objective harm without setting off the shame-backfire effect?
Someone told me to stop abusing my children so I went home and locked my children (who were entirely unaware of this interaction) in a cupboard for 3 days.
