The iconic Betty Skelton getting in the driver's seat of the 1956 Chevrolet Corvette pace car during Daytona's speed weeks in Florida. This was at the Daytona Beach and road course before the opening of the permanent speedway. She was a legendary American woman known as the "FIRST lady of First" .

In the 1950s she turned her focus towards land speed records. 1954 she became the first woman to compete in the stock car flying mile at Daytona Beach. 1956 she set nine different car speeds and acceleration records in the Corvette. She later set a Bonneville speed record at 277 MPH in a jet dragster. She proved that women could compete in male dominated sports.
