31M and realizing I've lost most of my 20s. Did anyone actually turn things around in their 30s?

I'm 31 and I'm having a hard time accepting where my life is right now.

I still live with my parents in the small town where I grew up. I've basically spent my adult life doing seasonal jobs, I have no degree, almost no social life and my long-term relationship is ending.

I constantly feel like everyone else started building their adult life years ago while I stayed in the same place.

The weird part is that I don't actually want something extraordinary. I want fairly ordinary things: to live somewhere I like, have some friends, work toward a career, travel, meet people, have relationships, feel like I'm actually participating in my own life.

I've spent years telling myself that I'll change something "next season", "next month", "when I feel better", etc. And now I'm 31 and realizing how much time has passed.

So I'd really like to hear from men who were genuinely stuck in their late 20s/early 30s and eventually changed direction.

Not success stories where you already had a degree, career and social network.

I'm interested in the messy ones:

  • What was your situation when you finally decided enough was enough?
  • What did you actually do first?
  • What changed your life more: moving, changing jobs, meeting new people, therapy, taking a risk, something else?
  • Did you ever feel like you had "missed your window"?
  • What do you wish you had done at 25 or 30?

I'm not looking for motivation. I'd really like to hear from people who have actually been through a similar "I wasted too much time and don't know how to restart" phase.

Suggest me a book about feeling lost in your early 30s

M31 and feel quite lost in life. I don’t have a university degree or a real career path, and I’ve mostly worked stressful seasonal jobs in a small mountain tourist town. Every year feels a bit like starting over without actually moving forward.

I often feel like I’ve fallen behind and wasted a lot of time. I don’t have a clear sense of purpose or direction, and I’m scared of making big changes: leaving my hometown, moving somewhere else, starting a new career, meeting new people, etc..
At the same time, I’m afraid that if I don’t change something, I’ll look back in 10 or 20 years and feel that I simply let my life pass by.

I’ve seen Stoner by John Williams recommended for people dealing with similar feelings, and I’m curious about it.

I’m looking for fiction or nonfiction that deals honestly with feeling lost, regret, fear of change, starting over, finding meaning, or realizing that you need to actually choose a direction in life.
It doesn’t have to be inspirational or have a happy ending. I’d actually prefer something honest and thought-provoking.

What books would you recommend for someone in this situation?
Thanks!

Shy/introverted first-timer in hostels – how social are they really? (+ Europe in October)

Hi! I'm 31M from Italy, planning a 7–8 day solo trip in October. I've travelled alone before, but always the same way: hotel → sightseeing alone → dinner alone → hotel. This time I want to actually meet people.

So I'm planning my first hostel stay, probably a 4–6 bed mixed dorm, to push myself to be more social. (I originally thought about getting a private room, but I’m worried that I would just end up doing the same thing as always and spending most of my time by myself. So I’m thinking that actually staying in a dorm might be a good way to force myself to be more social.)
The problem is I'm quite shy and not great at starting conversations, and my English is around B1.

A few questions:

  • How social are hostels really? Do people naturally end up doing things together, or do you need to be outgoing?
  • Any tips for a first-time hostel stay? (I'm a bit nervous and hesitant)
  • Is 7–8 days a good length? I think 3–4 would be too short for me to warm up.
  • I'm leaning towards Lisbon, but also considering Barcelona. Any other European cities that are great for meeting young travellers in October? I like trekking, walking tours, pub crawls, food, photography, sports (not swimming)..

Thanks! :)

Come avete fatto a migliorare?

Grazie mille

Grazie mille

Cambiare vita a 31 anni, possibile?

Grazie mille!

31M. My social anxiety, combined with chronic burnout, has left me completely isolated and deeply depressed. How do you break this cycle?

M31 living in a small mountain town that gets extremely overcrowded and loud during tourist seasons. I have dealt with marked social anxiety since I was a teenager, and it has practically dictated my entire adult life.

Because I am terrified of judgment, I avoid everything: social hobbies, volunteering, and even looking for a non-seasonal job or something new. I constantly internalize the thought that people see me as a failure or a "parasite" because I still live with my parents and work seasonal gigs. I have zero active friendships right now because whenever there is a conflict or disagreement, my only coping mechanism is to silently withdraw and cut contact. Even in group conversations, anxiety and sensory overload make me lose track of what people are saying, so I just shut down completely.

This paralyzing fear extends heavily into my romantic life. I have a deep-seated fear of approaching women, driven by the absolute terror of rejection and judgment. I am even terrified of the physical performance aspect, like the fear of kissing badly and being judged as inadequate. Because of this, I avoided dating entirely for most of my life (up to the age of 24); my current (and only) relationship started purely because my partner took 100% of the initiative. I know that if I were left on my own, I would never have the courage to make a move. Now, my relationship has been struggling for a couple of years and we don't even kiss anymore (tongue kiss). I am terrified that if it ends, I will never find anyone else and will remain completely alone forever.

But the social anxiety isn't acting alone. It is mixed with chronic hyperarousal, sensory issues, and severe executive dysfunction. I have spent my entire life running on an overloaded, stressed nervous system in a difficult family environment.

The cumulative weight of all this has caused a massive depressive crash. Over the last few years, I have developed severe anhedonia, apathy, and a constant dissociative feeling of being disconnected from reality, like I am "behind glass". I don't even enjoy things that take zero effort anymore, like playing video games or watching shows.

I am trapped in a loop. I know that joining a volunteer group or trying something new could help me break the isolation, but the social anxiety and anticipatory shame paralyze me. Then, the depression and complete executive burnout strip away whatever energy I have left to fight it. I understand exactly what my problem is, but I am completely blocked from taking action.

Has anyone else navigated severe social anxiety while also dealing with profound burnout and anhedonia? How do you force yourself to take a step when you are paralyzed by shame and completely drained of energy?

Diagnosed with ADHD, but no medications worked. Starting to doubt if that’s actually the main issue.

I have an ADHD diagnosis but no medication has ever worked, and I'm starting to doubt it's the main problem

31M, Italy. Diagnosed with inattentive ADHD a couple of years ago at a public clinic, through a fairly quick assessment. Medications tried, all with zero effect: modafinil, methylphenidate (20 mg then 40 mg, stopped because of a strong headache that showed up every time I exerted myself), bupropion 300 mg.

All the ADHD-compatible stuff is there, and it's gotten worse. I lose the thread of conversations, especially in groups. I reread the same sentences over and over and need absolute silence to concentrate. I forget within a minute what I was about to look up. I'm always late because I feel no sense of urgency while getting ready, and I can't estimate how long anything will take. There are piles of unsorted stuff around my room that I can touch less and less the bigger they get.

And then there's the pattern I know by heart: I get interested in something, I research it for weeks (forums, reviews, finding the perfect model), I buy everything, and the exact moment I have to actually start, it's gone. An e-bike used for less than a month. Miniatures never painted. A tattoo I researched obsessively for a month and then dropped. A month of photos and videos from a trip to China that I never posted because I couldn't decide which ones to pick.

But here's the thing: what actually dominates my days doesn't feel like ADHD.

I have complete anhedonia. I stopped playing games, stopped watching shows and films. I can't even keep up with the anime I've followed for years and whose volumes I collect. It's not that I avoid effortful things: nothing reaches me even from the free, easy ones. Apathy about everything, including brushing my teeth, cooking, doing dishes, tidying my room. I feel like a failure being 31 and still living here in my mountain tourist town doing seasonal work that only wrecks my mental health and leads nowhere.
Add social anxiety to the mix, so I never find the courage to jump into something new.

And there's a constant dissociative component: I'm behind glass, I don't feel like I'm in my body, I run on autopilot, time passes without me noticing, emotions don't arrive. Not sadness but flatness. On top of that I'm permanently hyperaroused: hypersensitive to noise (a motorbike accelerating, kids screaming or crying), never able to relax: I've never once managed to fall asleep on a plane or on a sunbed at the beach and I've been going to bed at 1 a.m. for ten years because before that "it feels too early."

So my question is: how much of this is badly treated ADHD, and how much is something else?

For anyone who's been through this:

  1. Has anyone had anhedonia and paralysis this severe with ADHD, or when this stuff is in the mix is it usually something else?
  2. Did ADHD meds only work for you after something else got sorted first (sleep, mood)? I did those trials while still sleeping badly and with nothing else being treated.
  3. After methylphenidate and bupropion failed, what else were you offered in Italy?
  4. How many of you eventually found out the ADHD was real but wasn't the main problem?

I have my first appointment with a psychiatrist in September. I've already been through three or four therapists without solving much of anything.

Any input would help a lot. Thanks :)

M31 I've been running on autopilot for years. Did anyone actually come out of this?

I don't really know how to write this. I've been carrying it alone for too long.

I'm 31. I've done seasonal work since I was 18; same jobs every winter and summer, in a mountain tourist town that becomes unlivable in high season. No degree, no skills worth anything anywhere else. I still live in the house I grew up in, with parents who never gave me much. My mother was only ever physically there, and when she was home she was stressed and critical about everything. My father stayed away as much as he could.

Every year a season ends, I tell myself it's the last one, and then it starts again exactly the same. It's been years.

But the worst part isn't the job: I stopped playing pc games and stopped watching shows and films. I can't even follow the anime I've been following for years, the one whose volumes are sitting right there in my room. It's not laziness, it's not that I'd rather stay on the couch. The couch doesn't give me anything either. Nothing reaches me anymore, not even the free easy things.

I don't want to do anything at all. And I mean brushing my teeth, cooking, washing dishes, tidying my room. Everything weighs a ton, and then I feel like garbage for not doing it, and the next day is identical.

And then there's the part I can't explain to anyone: it's like being behind glass. I don't feel like I'm in my body. I run on autopilot. Time passes and I'm not inside it. I'm not sad all day, there's just nothing there. Flat.

On top of that I've had social anxiety since my teens, and it blocks exactly the things that would get me out of this. Courses, volunteering, groups, job interviews, phone calls, showing up anywhere in person, I avoid all of it. I think about moving to a city or going abroad and I never go. I actually tried once: four months in a city, and I spent them alone in a flat or sitting in a park with my phone in my hand.

I have no friends left. Some moved away, some got partners, and some I just stopped talking to, because when something bothers me I don't say it, I disappear and go silent. Then I complain about being alone.

And honestly, the thing that gets me most is how far behind I am. Everyone I know has a career, a degree, a place of their own, a direction. My girlfriend is six years younger than me and she's already graduated, got a permanent job straight away, and knows exactly what she wants. I don't know what I want to do tomorrow. I feel like a failure who missed the window.. like everyone else got started and I just never did, and now it's too late to begin.

I understand all of this perfectly. I can explain my own mechanisms better than anyone. And I don't move an inch..

I'm doing something about it: I have a therapist and I see a psychiatrist for the first time in September.

What I actually want to ask is: did anyone here come out of this? Not the highlight-reel version. What did the first months look like, when it still felt like nothing was changing?

And if social anxiety was part of it, how did you start doing the things you were scared of, when you also had zero energy for anything?

Because what weighs on me most isn't feeling bad. It's the feeling that it's already too late.

E allora evito come ogni cosa..

So perfettamente cosa dovrei fare.

Grazie mille

New Balance 9060 sizing advice?

Hey everyone! How do the New Balance 9060 fit?

My foot measures 27.5 cm, and according to the size chart, I should get an EU 43 (US 9.5). Should I stick to the size chart, or do they run big/small?

Also, how do they look on tall and skinny body types? Since they’re a bit chunky, I’m wondering if they look good or a bit too bulky.

Would love to hear your thoughts before I order a pair

Thanks!
