A ton of toilet paper in the water at Coney Island yesterday

Did anyone else see this? It started rolling in around 4:30pm. I found out there was a bad sewage spill up river after searching online. The city closed some of the beaches in Queens and also one beach from further east but left Coney Island open for people to romp in sh*tty water. From what I could see it spanned several jetties.

The water quality at the NYC beaches is only tested weekly and was last tested Monday or Tuesday, giving no indication of how much fecal matter is in the water on the 4th of July. You would think a sewage spill up river would prompt more testing and they would close the beach with visible toilet paper !!!
I informed the life guard who seemed clueless and made a 311 complaint.

Where to get a corndog?

My 7yo niece is visiting with my sister next week, and last time they visited when were in Manhattan and she got a corndog from a food truck and now it’s all she wants when she comes this time. But, since I’m recently postpartum we will be sticking in the neighborhood. And food trucks that do them that aren’t by Barclays? I’m further south. Thanks!

Braking hard for peds in the rain

Hello! I’m curious if you all have any safety suggestions for rainy day biking in busy areas where peds are not looking at the bike lane before crossing.

Usually if I ring my bell and they don’t stop I can brake. The other day I had to hit the brakes hard while it was rainy and the tired skidded out, really scary.

I don’t want to be the jerk zooming through and knocking over an elderly woman pushing a stroller (true bike lane situation today on the upper west side 😭 - not the knocking over part but she was walking directly down the bike line as if it were part of the sidewalk and I was so scared for her!). I’m also nervous about getting rammed into by someone biking behind me going at a constant pace, not expecting my brake.

How are we getting around this, if at all?

Hidden Myka Greek Yogurt is on 15th and Irving Place

For those dying to try the “secret” location is on 15th and Irving next to the High Note. Personally wouldn’t wait in any line let alone for Froyo but figured I’d help out some of the foodies here

For anyone interested - I have a friend who bought two tickets to the 2026 World Cup Final on July 19, 2026. The idiot didn’t realize that he’s getting married on the same day. If anyone wants to go in his place:

It's at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York. The bride’s name is Mary, and everything has already been paid for.

Worked a shift at a restaurant in Brooklyn, what I saw in the kitchen needs to be talked about

Worked a shift at a Djon Djon in NYC and what I saw in the kitchen needs to be talked about

During a shift, I had access to the kitchen and back-of-house area. Here's what I documented:

- Raw meat sitting on a filthy floor in an open tray — no table, no rack, directly on a visibly dirty, wet surface surrounded by broken-down cardboard and trash
- Large bags of raw meat stored at the front door — not in a walk-in, not on a speed rack, just piled near the entrance next to dirty dishes
- Whole fish marinating in what looks like a green sauce, sitting on top of a chest freezer on a grimy counter.

None of this is minor.

Djon Djon in BK needs to do better.

Trying to figure out if I should keep working there, any thoughts?

Is this what I think it is?

Moved to Greenpoint 6 months ago. Saw the water turning a deep red-brown a couple weeks ago and it lead me down the rabbit hole of learning about the disgusting history of pollution in Newtown Creek. Woke up today to see it the worst I’ve seen it yet. Is this caused by what I think it is or is it just some kind of water density difference meeting the East River… I can’t look at the river the same way anymore after learning what is continuing to be loaded into it. I know cities are always going to be dirty but this feels like such a disappointing failure to preserve the quality of living in NYC. Disturbed but not surprised. Hoping I’m misunderstanding something here?

What parts are unsafe if you are an idiot without good awareness?

I see a lot of travel advice that says you will be fine if you are not an idiot and keep your wits about you.

Here's the thing. I have enough self awareness to know I am an idiot, am very inattentive, and won't be describe as having wits.

What parts do I need to avoid FOR SAFETY REASONS?

Almost got hit by 3 bikes in the last weekend alone

Problem is getting markedly worse, higher concentration of delivery bikes, and no longer contained to 13th and 1st.

Flagrantly disobeying traffic laws, driving the wrong way, on the sidewalk, and chaining up bikes overnight all along 1st and up all side streets. Leaving garbage and food waste everywhere. Even starting to expand to 2nd now.

We know they are using the EV as a hub since they are leaving bikes here and going home.

Realistically is it going to take a kid or elderly person to get hit and injured to get the local community board to pay attention?

If there was someone who fixed this and only this I would vote on a single issue. Every single one of my neighbors I’ve spoken to about it said the same.

Watched someone on a modified e-bike throw a water balloon at a runner in Park Slope today

Happened in Prospect Park near the lake.

Seriously, fuck you if you're reading this. It wasn't funny. You were driving 40 mph on a modified ebike, and of course you chose the single woman running alone to throw a water balloon at.

You're a pathetic child, and the fact that you had to flee from the woman you hit as fast as possible makes you a coward.

Hopefully karma will do its job.

I’m in my legume era. Where are your favorite bean dishes in the city?

Especially if they aren’t black beans or chickpeas! Love those two ofc but seeking some variety.
