I honestly love how they matched the person with the Pokémon based on how they dressed and their overall aesthetic. So creative ❤️

For clarity, I am neither a developer nor creating a ROM hack, but I wanted to put forth a what-if sort of discussion on what horror elements (i.e., if crafted well) would make for a truly engrossing gameplay experience.

There are certain genres in my mind that, if executed well in a Pokémon ROM hack, would make for quite the engaging and immersive storyline.

Take psychological horror as an example.

ROM hacks like Pokémon Snakewood, for example, got the initial part of the set-up somewhat correct. Starting in a zombie-infested Hoenn region, battling your way through the apocalypse and meeting zombified trainers and their zombified Pokémon along the way, really set up the environments and overall worldbuilding decently well.

However, as we all know, the execution and consistency did not last throughout the plot of Snakewood, introducing convoluted storyline elements, random characters for comedic purposes that fell flat, and maddeningly infuriating cryptic puzzles that heavily detracted from the overall gameplay experience.

Ultimately, in my eyes, combining elements such as psychological tension and subtle environmental dread makes for a truly engrossing horror Pokémon ROM hack, rather than relying on the shock-value gore or comedic absurdity that derailed games like Pokémon Snakewood.

That being said, the purpose of this discussion post is not a review of Snakewood but to further holistically examine the non-clichéd narrative elements, gameplay experiences, character development, and world-building components that would truly create a compelling horror gaming experience within the world of Pokémon ROM Hacks.

I grew up playing JRPGs as a kid and throughout my life, and until this very day.

Whether some of the mainstream games or fan-made passion projects, I always find myself having a deep admiration for the thought, artistry, and craftsmanship that happens behind the scenes in developing such well-designed game settings.

From the natural environments and towns, city marketplaces, Inns, Taverns, the NPCs you interact with, the various mini-games and other creative activities that you partake in either solo or with your party members. The list goes on and on.

That said, the Crème de la crème of what makes a standout JRPG, in my humble opinion, is the extent to which it can draw the player in and truly feel immersed in a world that is not their own, but it certainly feels as if it always truly was just that.

The worlds in which JRPGs are set serve as a home away from home to immerse oneself in fantastical environments and go on outlandish adventures.

That is why, over the years, upon experiencing so many adventures and narratives unfolding before my eyes across all kinds of fantastical settings, it truly dawned on me to think that the human ingenuity to come up with these kinds of deeply rich. engrossing, and overall riveting plots rival that of even many of the mainstream AAA movies across Hollywood or any other major movie industries.

In essence, I believe that the games developed within the JRPG genre are more than just a passing escape from reality. Rather, the games themselves represent living, breathing testaments to the extent of what the human imagination can bring to the table. These games don't merely showcase a narrative, but invite us to live inside of these meticulously crafted worlds and experience the fantasy for ourselves. Our very own adventure.

Across every town visited, every NPC greeted, and every individual story experienced, the worlds that we visit truly leave a mark on us all. In more ways than one.

Hidden bases in the core Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald games were so fun to discover and explore

Route 119 in general, as this YouTuber (CannedWolfMeat) pointed out had a lot of secretive locations

Decorating the secret bases with rare plushies and other collectible items/furnishings was so nice too.

There's this game developer and animator on YouTube that I discovered recently - the channel is called RedResult.

He is currently developing Stick Life (i.e., which is essentially a sequel of sorts to the Stick RPG series) and has posted some videos showcasing some of his progress on the game and he also frequently updates his Discord as well.

The project looks promising and I am excited to see how this game will expand upon the previous entries in the Stick RPG franchise.

Does anyone else love the whole random slice of life, everyday elements, or world-building ambience that are part of the FTF games?

Like, you could just be doing your usual routine, like doing groceries, filling up at the gas station, chatting with a co-worker at the office, etc. You know... mundane stuff that you do every day and then suddenly the character you're playing as gets pulled into some crazy scenario.

It's like that everyday realism vibe before the shit really starts to hit the fan that is executed really well in the FTF franchise.

So I just recently bought one of those Febreze air freshener plug-ins for my room, and it got me thinking...

What if there were a line of these air freshener plug-ins that utilized some form of ancient Egyptian-inspired perfumery or fragrances?

For example, if you wanted your room to smell like lotus (blue water lilies) that can be found along the Nile, so that you can have your home smell like a fresh floral scent, or perhaps scents that infuse some of the spices that ancient Egyptians were traditionally thought to use, like Cardamom and/or Cinnamon?

Or even some type of other ancient Egyptian inspired incense's that combines an earthy and woodsy type of scent?

Ideas for Packaging:

For some of the scents, you could have the outer cardboard retail packaging resemble that of the Key of Hamunaptra puzzle box, and then to unbox the air freshener, you would have to twist the top of the box to make the cardboard flaps open outward, which would then reveal the plug-in air freshener in the center or the air freshener bottle.

I know it's a random thought, but still interesting to think about nonetheless IMHO

When they mentioned the husband recently dying of dementia, my mind instantly gravitated towards 'The Taking of Deborah Logan'

Seems like it'll be leaning on the traditional mockumentary/investigatory style of having a filmmaker friend record the events in real time.

It also looks like the film will be released next month (August, 2026) at its world premiere, but no mention of a digital or streaming release just yet.

What do you guys think of the film's plot? Any specific elements of the synopsis stand out to you the most?

The acting seems a bit like a B-rated/low budget commercial production, but then again, some B-rated flicks actually turn out to be pretty decent, so I'd be curious to see the full film so I can better judge it for myself.
