In my opinion as long as a game is being released on the PS5 system why wouldn’t the developer have the choice to release a physical copy whether it’s past January 2028 or not? Why wouldn’t Sony just announce they are planning on going digital for the next console i instead of ruining the end of the life of the PS5? Why can’t we just enjoy physical copies while we still have a machine that can play them?

Sony’s announcement was so vague it really doesn’t go in to details or even explain the reason. Obviously there is some financial incentive to go digital but I’m sure there are some studios out there that are pro-physical.

So with no actual release date we can assume that the PS6 will be released somewhere around the beginning of 2028 wether it be for the holiday season 2027 or not we know that Sony’s announcement was they are discontinuing physical discs as of January 2028. It’s also safe to assume that games will still continue to be released on the PS5 after that point due to the amount of games still in development unless we see a record amount of games release in 2027 which I doubt.

There are games that don’t have release dates on a schedule yet that have been announced. Do they have the final decision whether or not they want to be released on a disc after January of 2028 or is Sony just not allowing it.

If Intergalactic : The Heretic Prophet gets pushed back and released after January of 2028 is the window for it be a disc based game just closed?

I think people were willing to make an exception to put their preferences aside for GTA 6 but when it comes to changing the whole face of gaming I think they are making a huge mistake.

When Sony made the announcement today the first thing I knew immediately was that I will not be buying the PS6 if it’s a digital only console. I’m just not going to do it. And I think there are millions of others who won’t as well.

They are going to make a PS6 — charge you 800 bucks and give you a 2tb drive that needs to be upgraded. They are just ripping people off when you can just build a PC. They are essentially making us not really need a console anymore.

I think they are using GTA 6 as a gauge to solidify their decision and that’s where the mistake is being made. GTA 6 is the most hyped game possibly ever. If a game like Wolverine tried this bullshit I’m sure a lot more people would actually boycott it.

I think in the long run this will kill their sales margins and they obviously cannot read the room. Also, as a lot of people have been pointing out —why not just switch to PC gaming (other than exclusives) if consoles are all digital anyway you’re essentially just using your PS the same way you’d use a PC but with less advantages.
