On a hybrid you can log the traction battery state of charge at both ends of every drive, and it is more interesting than I expected

No name and no links here, the mods asked me to keep it that way.

Context first. My dealer sold me a plug in dongle with its own app, it died after a month and took the app with it, so being an iOS developer I got a twenty dollar generic ELM327 adapter and started reading the car myself.

The part that surprised me on a hybrid is how much story there is in the traction battery state of charge if you just record it at the start and the end of each drive. Short trips, cold mornings and hilly routes all leave a different fingerprint, and none of it shows on the dash because the dash only ever shows you now.

Two things worth saying if you go poking around yourself. First, a lot of the fuel and consumption parameters that make sense on a normal engine are meaningless or misleading on a hybrid, so anything you build has to know when to shut up rather than print a number. Second, reading is safe and writing is not. Mine never writes to the car at all, no clearing, no resets, no session changes, and I would suggest the same to anyone.

Happy to answer questions about the OBD side.

My dealer's dongle died and took its app with it, so I started reading the car myself. Three things that surprised me.

No name and no links here, that is how the mods and I agreed to do it, and the story is the interesting part anyway.

A while back the dealer sold me one of those plug in dongles with a companion app. It died inside a month, and since the app only ever talked to that one dongle, the app died with it. I write iOS software, so instead of buying another one I got a twenty dollar generic ELM327 adapter and started reading the car myself.

Three things surprised me.

How much the trip computer smooths things. Where the ECU exposes fuel rate directly you can integrate it across a drive and get a figure that is measured rather than modelled, and it does not always agree with the dash.

Battery voltage is the most useful number nobody looks at. Logged over weeks, the dip while cranking starts sagging long before the car ever fails to start. No cleverness needed, just patience and a graph.

And how easy it would be to do damage. Most of what an OBD adapter can do is write, not read. Clear codes, change diagnostic sessions, reset service intervals. I decided early that mine would never write anything at all, and that turned out to be the best decision in the whole project even though it means telling people no fairly often.

Happy to answer anything about the OBD side, all of that is standard and works the same on any car with the port.

Built a CarPlay app that logs your drives and reads the car, after VW switched off the one I was using

Putting my hand up first, I wrote this, so read it with that in mind.

The short story is that VW pulled We Connect Go overnight and took every trip I'd logged with it, no export, no warning. I write software for a living so I rebuilt it, and the rule I set myself was no servers, everything stays on the phone, because I wasn't going through that twice.

The reason I'm posting it here rather than in a car sub is that CarPlay was where it got genuinely useful, and it took a while to work out why. The phone screen is the wrong place for this. You're driving. So on CarPlay it's deliberately not a wall of gauges, it's a trip that records itself with nothing to press, the parking spot saved for you when you get out, and a plain indicator telling you whether the adapter is talking to the car or not. Everything detailed waits until you're parked and can actually look at it.

What it collects, for the record. Every drive gets logged on its own with route, distance, time and what the fuel cost, and if you leave a cheap OBD2 adapter plugged in it fills in what the engine was doing, warm up time, coolant and oil peaks, real consumption off the ECU rather than the dash number, hard braking. Then the diagnostics side, battery health with a history, fault codes explained in plain English, particulate filter monitoring. Plus reminders for insurance, tax and servicing with a logbook of what you spent.

No account, no ads, nothing leaves the phone, export as JSON or GPX whenever you want.

It's on the App Store, search DrivePulse Car Companion. Free to try, one time unlock, no subscription. Android is in closed testing.

What I'd actually like from this sub is a sanity check on the CarPlay side. I've only been able to test on two head units and CarPlay behaves differently on almost every one. If you try it and something renders oddly or the tab layout misbehaves on your car, tell me what car it is and I'll fix it, that's the sort of thing I can't find on my own.

Need 12 testers for DrivePulse, a car companion app that works fully offline. Mutual, I'll test yours the same day

Hi all. I'm on the 14 day closed testing treadmill like everyone else here and I'm short about 12 people.

What the app is, briefly, so you know what you're installing. It's a car companion app. It logs your drives on its own with no start button and shows you the route, distance, time and what the fuel cost. It remembers where you parked. It keeps reminders for insurance, tax and servicing with a little logbook of what you've spent. If you plug in a cheap OBD2 adapter it also reads the car properly, battery health with history, fault codes explained in plain English rather than a P code, real consumption from the ECU, particulate filter monitoring. It's the replacement I built after VW switched off We Connect Go and took my trip history with it, so the whole thing runs on the phone with no account and no server.

Worth saying, you do not need an OBD2 adapter to test it. Trips, parking, reminders and the logbook all work with just the phone. If you happen to have an ELM327 lying around then even better, and I'd love to know what your car reports.

What I actually need from you is the boring Google requirement, install it and leave it installed for the 14 days, and open it now and then, ideally once or twice while you're actually driving somewhere. That's it. No account to make, no ads, nothing to buy.

Fully mutual. I've got two Android phones here and I'll install yours the same day, no drive by. Drop your link when you comment.

To get added, comment or DM me the Gmail address you use on the Play Store and I'll put you on the list, usually within the hour. It's already live on iOS if you want to see what you're signing up for before you commit, the Android build is the same app.

Thanks in advance, and genuinely, if you test it and something looks wrong on your car, tell me. That's the useful part for me.

DrivePulse (car companion, OBD2) needs ~12 for the 14-day closed test — I fully test yours back (2 Android phones + iPhone)

Hey everyone. Solo dev here. My app is in Google Play closed testing and I need the usual dozen testers opted in for 14 straight days to get promoted. Full reciprocity, no free riding: I run two Android phones and an iPhone, so I'll stay on your Android track the whole two weeks, and take your TestFlight too if you have an iOS build. I actually open and use the apps and I'll leave you real feedback.

App: DrivePulse, a car companion. It logs your trips automatically with no start button, tracks battery and car health, remembers where you parked, and does OBD2 diagnostics if you plug in a cheap ELM327 adapter. Everything stays offline, no account. It's already live on iOS, Android is the part in testing.

Since it's a closed test on an email list, drop your Google account email here or in DM and I'll add you, then this opt-in link will work for you: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/app.drivepulse.mobile

Reply with your app and I'll join yours the same day. I'm in for the full 14 days, same as I'm asking. Thanks, I'll get to everyone who comments.

Ho una T-Roc e usavo tutti i giorni We Connect Go col DataPlug ufficiale VW: registro viaggi, consumi, tracker viaggio e consumi.

App Store: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6776173662

Veramente grazie.

- EDIT FINALE, CODICI FINITI! -
