4K mp4 in QT vs VLC (Quicktime stutters)

Riddle me this: Why can VLC play a 4K mp4 h.264 compressed video smooth and stutter free while Quicktime makes the video stutter?

I'm on a fairly powerful MBP M4 Pro with 36GB Ram (macOS Tahoe latest version).
