I'm starting to draw and do some testing of the 4th region, named Lethe. Finally, we'll find out what's happening at the Zapatomicon Nuclear Power Plant.

🗺️ Nowhere Island spans 10 regions (40 km²), with 3 already in Early Access and the 4th on the way.

These are the gameplay mechanics I've designed for my game. Do you have any additional ideas or suggestions?

Trailer

These are some of the gameplay mechanics you can use to survive against the zombies in ZombUs:

  • You can disguise yourself as a zombie (at the cost of your health). However, the disguise is removed if you get wet or if you're spotted by a Screamer.
  • Throwing a rock can reveal hidden Snoopers and Plumbers, while also attracting all other zombies that are currently visible.
  • Climbing onto a vehicle may trigger its alarm, attracting nearby zombies. Some of them will try to destroy the vehicle. The trick is to escape just before it explodes.
  • Use a flashbang to lure zombies into one area, then follow up with a grenade or Molotov cocktail.
  • Barricade entrances with furniture (although it's only partially effective).
  • Use bear traps, landmines, and other traps to your advantage.
  • Climb over or jump across fences. Zombies will usually have to go around them. (Large obstacles can still be climbed by some zombies.)
  • Balance across ropes or cables stretched between buildings. Zombies are unable to follow you this way.
  • Use the Mastery Balloon, a special inflatable balloon that lets you perform huge jumps or safely survive long falls.

I'm open to any ideas that complement these mechanics or introduce new ways for players to survive, outsmart zombies, or create interesting emergent gameplay.

I'm also thinking about adding companions later in development, so ideas in that direction are welcome.

For example:

  • A dog that can sniff out food or warn you about hidden zombies.

Video ZombUs

ZombUs. A tour around map 2 of the game to show its size. Is it worth it?

The video shown was sped up 10 times.

The early access version includes 3 maps of the same size as the one shown in the video.
I've been struggling to promote the game. I keep asking myself whether it's worth building an indie game of this magnitude, one that surpasses the scale of Skyrim, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, or Cyberpunk 2077.
Is it worth investing so much time and effort when I still haven't managed to surpass a thousand wishlists?

I don't have the answer yet.

I started this project two years ago with very little experience in game development, and looking back, I'm actually quite proud of what I managed to achieve in the early stages. But...

My original plan was simple: if the community liked the idea and the EA started selling, I would have the time and resources to improve the game, add more content, and make the overall experience much better.

What I completely underestimated was marketing.

I've come to realize that my game has almost no visibility on Steam, and trying to promote it has been a frustrating and often discouraging experience. Creating the game has been challenging, but getting people to discover it has proven even harder.

I know this is an indie project, and it will always remain one. But I still have an ambitious vision for it. My goal is to create a compelling story set in a 40 km² open world, which is actually larger than the maps of GTA: San Andreas, Skyrim, or even Cyberpunk 2077.

I understand that a bigger map doesn't automatically make a better game. What truly matters is filling that world with meaningful content, interesting characters, and memorable experiences, and that's exactly what I want to focus on.

That said, staying motivated hasn't been easy lately. Sometimes it feels like all the work disappears into the void when so few people ever get to see it.

Still, I'm not ready to give up. Every bit of feedback, every wishlist, and every player who decides to give the game a chance reminds me why I started this journey in the first place.

It only takes 3 minutes! Which trailer do you prefer: the old or the new?

I've been struggling with which trailer I should use, and apparently the one I'm using isn't working. Can you help me choose? The old one focuses more on the beginning of the story, while the new one focuses on the action.
The core of ZombUs is your truck and trailer, which acts as your mobile home while you explore the island. To survive, you’ll need to find schematics in different regions to upgrade your trailer’s features and improve your living space.

Any other suggestions are also welcome.
Thank you for your cooperation and time...

Finding the best clip to introduce the game trailer? How about this one?

https://youtu.be/zQlDzAcrcYU
Please keep in mind that we are only discussing the very first clip of the trailer. The final trailer will be composed of multiple clips, each showcasing different aspects of the game and contributing to the overall narrative.

My challenge is to identify the most impactful opening sequence, one that immediately captures the player's attention and best defines the core identity of the game.

ZombUs is an open-world survival game with a strong focus on exploration, progression, and base building. Unlike traditional survival games, your base is not a static structure. Your home is a truck trailer that evolves alongside your journey.

ZombUs - I think I'm failing to communicate what my game actually is. Am I focusing on the wrong things in my trailer?

I'm struggling to get players interested in my game, and I'm starting to think the problem is how I'm presenting it.

So far, my main trailer has focused heavily on the story and atmosphere. However, I'm wondering if that's the wrong approach. Maybe I'm not communicating the actual gameplay experience clearly enough, and that's why people aren't connecting with it.

I'm considering replacing the main trailer with one that focuses much more on the core gameplay loop and action, while letting the story take a secondary role.

The clip I'm sharing here could potentially become the new main trailer if I go in that direction.

What do you think? Does focusing on the core gameplay seem like a better strategy than leading with the story? I'd really appreciate some honest feedback.

The very beginning of ZombUs by Video Game Cream..."What are your thoughts on this start?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k55ie3OTWic&t=121s
ZombUs is a solo-developed, open-world survival experience that delivers a unique mix of gritty survival mechanics and sharp social satire.

In a punishing yet tragicomic apocalypse, your truck is more than just a vehicle—it is your mobile base, your sanctuary, and your home.

Scavenge for resources to upgrade your rolling fortress, fight off the infected, and navigate a world destroyed by a deadly plague and the ridiculousness of modern times.

When you think the idea might work, but it doesn't always pan out...

In ZombUs, I'm trying to prioritize cunning over pure, hard combat... using your surroundings can save your life... on the other hand, any mistake comes at a high price... An alarm can go on at any moment, a phone might ring, but a car can explode and wipe out a bunch of zombies... or you could throw a stone to wake up hidden zombies... either way, when there are too many, it's better to run...
