Small powered usb hub for cd drive

Im keen to try one of the disc drive cores and have a spare usb cd drive lying around: any recs for a small/low-profile powered hub? Or just a way to plug it into the wall directly that can easily be powered on and off?

Visual noise on Dreamcast: PSU-related?

I have a dreamcast with a GDEMU that i run into my CRT, and I've noticed it has some noticeable visual noise, like a horizontal rippling effect. I only have this problem with the dreamcast, every other console looks fine over s-video.

Ive tested multiple av cables and i get the same result. However, if i run it via scart to my Retrotink 4k into my HDTV, the signal is crystal clear.

My gut feeling is that its power supply-related, and the tink is filtering out the noise. Am i right? And if so, should i do a psu replacement with a modern third party solution or just recap?

Worth an extra $1000 to replace old insulation?

I had a company out to look at my attic insulation, and they quoted about $2000 to top off the existing insulation to R49, air seal, etc.

They also gave me an option for an extra $1000 to remove the existing insulation vs just topping it off.

Is it worth the extra grand to get the existing insulation removed?

The house was built in 1998 and both contractors who looked at it said it was in good shape, just not enough of it. And the upstairs holds heat/cools well, I'm just looking to drive down the humidity during the warmer months.

Also before anyone suggests it: im not handy/confident enough to tackle this on my own, nor do i want to.

Pineapple Upside Down Drink

Needed to use up the rest of a can of pineapple juice, so i came up with this as a nightcap:

- 2oz pineapple juice

- 1oz Rum Bar Overproof

- 0.5oz Benedictine

- 0.25oz Lime Cordial

Shake, strain over ice in a double old fashioned, and garnish with fresh nutmeg.

The name is a reference to the ratios being kind of out of wack, and also i was drunk and tired so i couldn't think of a better name.

Enjoy!

Gold rum recs for someone who doesn't like Flor de Caña

Ive been using Flor de Caña 4 for my gold rum, but i recently tried some on its own and realized im not s huge fan of it.

Any suggestions for something better? I know gold rum is one of those overly-broad rum categories, but im just looking for something kind of all-purpose.

UPS for gaming PC?

Anyone have a recommendation for a good UPS for my gaming PC? Doesn't need to be anything crazy, I just want it to survive brownouts/blackouts long enough for me to shut it off gracefully. After the latest brownout and my computer not booting after the first couple tries, it successfully put the fear of god in me to get a good backup system.

Chinola pineapple cocktails?

I've tried to find some but i either get recipes that use pineapple juice, pineapple rum, or chinola passionfruit. And the recipes on the chinola website are the typical "use liqueur as base spirit in standard cocktails to show it off even though it's not balanced at all" stuff.

Anyone have some cocktails that use this stuff?

Favorite treat/dessert recipes?

My partner just got diagnosed with LPR after having pain in her throat for several months, and she's distraught.

I do all the cooking/baking in the household, and im hoping to find some ideas for stuff i can make her that'll be a bit of an indulgence without messing up the healing process.

What do yall like to make that's both acid-friendly and a treat?

Preamp: reciever, built-in, or external?

Looking at getting my first turntable, and I've been eyeballing the Fluance RT82 as it seems to be highly regarded here. I plan to plug it into my Denon AVR s540bt.

Neither the turntable nor the reciever have a built-in preamp, so my options are:

  1. Get the RT82 and an external preamp

  2. Upgrade the receiver to one with a built-in preamp

  3. Get a lower-end Fluance model with a preamp.

Which would you suggest?

How to determine RT-AC68U hardware revision?

I have a RT-AC68U that I want to flash freshtomato on since it's EOL. I no longer have the box, and the only clue I have for the hardware revision is the FCC ID: MSQ-RTAC68UV2. The first google AI result I got suggested the "V2" denotes B2 models, but I'm not gonna blindly trust that.

Do I actually have a B2, and is there another way to verify?

B2 is in the list of supported model revisions here, so I want to confirm before i flash the new firmware.

Humidity suddenly higher, but only upstairs

We got a whole-home humidifier a couple years ago since i live in a high humidity area with hot summers and it's been great so far. But this week i noticed the humidity has been noticably higher upstairs. It generally hovers around 3+5% higher than what the dehumidifier is set at, but lately its been up to 10+% during the day.

Had our HVAC tech out and he said everything looks fine. He checked the drain pan in the attic too (his theory was that an issue there might explain why the problem is only upstairs) but he said that looked ok. I checked the drain pipe from the dehumifier myself as well and that too looked good.

I dont remember the humidity being this high in previous summers, but we've also had a good amount of rain lately, and the same brutal heatwave that a lot of the world is facing.

Is this just the hvac + dehumidifier doing the best it can against nature, or is there a problem im not seeing? On paper it makes sense: added rain = added humidity, and all that water is gonna evaporate upwards. But im still wondering if im missing something.

Is it safe/advisable to leave a string spiked for a long period of time?

My gut feeling is that this is probably a bad idea, but its also annoying to respike and retune every time.

Discord minecraft account selling scam?

I got an email a few days ago claiming that a Minecraft account supposedly/possibly belonging to me was being sold on discord:

>Hello, I recently found something that I thought you should know about concerning the account <account_name>. While checking a Discord server, I saw a post where someone seems to be selling or offering access to the account, and it has attracted interest from multiple users. I wasn't sure if the post belonged to you, so I decided to contact you first. If it wasn't created by you, someone else may be trying to access the account or misrepresent themselves as the owner.

>If you still control the Microsoft account linked to it, I recommend changing the password as a safety measure. You could also join the Discord server and reach out to the moderation team so they can examine the listing and determine whether it should be removed or investigated further.

>If you've already lost access to the Microsoft account, it's a good idea to start Microsoft's account recovery process without delay. The Discord moderators may also have information that could assist you. For reference, here's the Discord server where I noticed the listing: <discord_invite_link>

This feels like a scam, but i cant figure out what the actual angle would be. The minecraft account doesnt belong to me, and the email he sent this to isnt the email that belongs to my Microsoft account. Obviously i didnt click on the discord link, but it at least appears to be a real discord invite link too.

Is this a scam, or just a misunderstanding? And if so what's the angle?

Better practice habits

I've been learning clawhammer on my own for about a year and a half, and ive been having a lot of fun, but ive found my practice habits go like this:

  1. Find a new song i like

  2. Get pretty good at the song and practice it for a few weeks

  3. Slowly get bored with the song until i move onto a new one

Ive found that i end up getting bored with the song im learning before ive truly got it down pat, and moving from song to song means it's becoming hard to actually retain all of them.

How can i improve my practicing so i can actually build up a solid repertoire of songs?
