Could we maybe NOT keep telling people of a certain opinion to watch a movie that doesn't exist?

With increased discussions of the upcoming The Magician's Nephew movie, which has unfortunately become very divisive amongst certain subsets of fans, I keep seeing more comments insisting if people "don't like Greta" they should just go watch the bbc versions of Narnia.

At first I didn't think anything of it. After all, it's common for book fans to be partial to the BBC TV versions (not all of us, but a large enough proportion), and I figured this was just the opposite side gatekeeping the discussion as per usual. You know, you don't like the look of this adaptation, you're not allowed to comment in this space because "you're negative".

But I increasingly realized quite a number of these people insisting fans go watch the BBC version are utterly convinced there's a BBC Magician's Nephew! They've been arguing in fandom spaces INSISTING Greta Gerwig's upcoming movie is NOT the first screen adaptation of MN.

Two seconds of googling would reveal these people to be completely wrong, would tell them the BBC never adapted The Magician's Nephew.

But since they're set on arguing, I just want to a) say knock it off, this is not a thing and b) let anyone whose interest may have genuinely been caught and are looking for the adaptation, wondering why they can't find it, know these commenters have led you astray.

There is no such TV film.

The BBC made The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian and VDT (combined as a single feature), and Silver Chair.

That is all. There is no more.

Sigh

I understand a lot of you are open minded regarding what some of these changes may look like in the new film... but:

- Setting the first film in the 50s as opposed to the early 1900s changes the source material so much it that it can only be fanfiction at best. I don't mind fanfiction at all, so long as its not marketed as canon.

- The casting choice of Meryl Streep makes no sense to me. Either Streep is going to play the part deep and affecting male (in which case why cast her) or we are going to have a very gender confusing depiction of Aslan (and maybe that was Greta Gerwig's point in casting Streep)

- Greta Gerwig sys she envisions this as some sort of "rock" fantasy and then name drops Bowie (Aslan as influenced by Ziggy Stardust). I love Bowie... but the messianic vibes of self-destructive rock God Ziggy ae far different than the majestic and spiritual nature of Aslan. Greta calls the work a ground up reimagining...

Now this may wind up to be a very good movie in itself but this is not CS Lewis's "A Magicians Nephew" but a work of Gerwig which only loosely uses the source material to create her own disparate "interpretation"... I understand all directors bring their own vision to classical source material, but these reboots or films based on book only ever work if the director and production is in collaboration with the source material in spirit.

Will I watch this, I don't know maybe, maybe not... depends on what continues to drip out. That said, this, from all that's been released, looks Narnia adjacent at best.
