Reese Waters: National Association of Black Journalists Dumps Stephen A. Smith
Stephen A. Smith gonna cry in the car.
The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) handed out five Thumbs Down Awards at its annual convention in Atlanta on Saturday.
One recipient overshadowed the others: Stephen A. Smith, who has Black women Michelle Obama, Jasmine Crockett & Kamala Harris to thank.
The ESPN host and YouTube personality was singled out for his “recurring public pattern of disparaging commentary directed at prominent Black women across politics, sports, and media.” Those include Oprah, Michelle Obama, Jasmine Crockett, and Kamala Harris.
Other thumbs down awardees include CBS News, The Washington Post, Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr, and local TV station owner and media executive DuJuan McCoy.
The decision to include Smith rang out within the convention halls and social media, drawing immediate coverage from blogs and mainstream news.
Smith, who has worked with NABJ in the past, responded, promising to make his own case for why the organization is failing Black communities. He can start inward with the specific accusation, his treatment of Black women and work from there..

A Response to ESSENCE’s Top 50 R&B Song of All Time
You might have seen that Essence magazine recently released their list of the 50 Greatest R&B Songs of All Time. It’s a pretty marvelous list, filled with some of the most talented artists and most moving songs ever created. In my opinion, they got a lot right. Their list is definitely better than some of those othermagazines and sites that try to compile the best of what musical artists have to offer and wind up showing just how much they don’t know music. I would quibble with some of the positions of artists and some of the some choices for particular artists, but Essence did pretty good—though, no Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin is diabolical!
In any event, Essence extended an invitation in the write-up of their list. They said: So yes, debate the rankings. Tell us what should have been higher. Tell us what we missed. Defend your favorite with your whole chest. That's part of loving R&B, too.
They ain’t have to tell me but one time!

{Self Promo} Straight Outta LA: Intro Chapter, Part 2
Culture Receipts examines race, culture, sports, hip hop, politics and media through historical analysis and evidence. My current Hip Hop and the White House series traces hip hop’s political and cultural evolution and its relationship to American politics. Straight Outta LA: Intro Chapter, Part 2 focuses on Los Angeles, N.W.A. and the larger political forces surrounding the culture. The series explores how a culture once vilified by the political establishment eventually reached the White House. My work combines cultural criticism, history, politics and firsthand perspective.
Readers interested in hip hop, Black culture, race, politics, history, sports, media and cultural criticism.
